Spurs: Paratici in talks for Dumfries deal

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Denzel Dumfries to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), who claim that Fabio Paratici has already made contact with Giuseppe Marotta to inform the Inter Milan chief of Tottenham’s interest in signing the 26-year-old, who is reported to be available for around €40m (£33m) this summer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

However, the report goes on to state that Bayern Munich have also contacted Inter concerning a deal for the Netherlands international, something which would suggest Spurs will have a fight on their hands if they are to land the wing-back this summer.

Conte can axe Emerson with Dumfries

Considering how impressive Dumfries has been for Inter following his €14m (£11.5m) move from PSV Eindhoven last summer, coupled with how underwhelming Emerson Royal has been for Spurs since his £25m switch from Barcelona in the same window, it is easy to see why Antonio Conte would be keen on a deal for the 26-year-old.

Indeed, over his 28 Serie A appearances this season, the £33m-rated wing-back has been in fantastic form for Simone Inzaghi’s side, scoring four goals, registering five assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of one shot and making 0.8 key passes per game.

The £51k-per-week defender has also impressed in metrics more typical of his role, helping the Nerazzurri keep seven clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 0.2 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 0.6 clearances and winning 3.8 duels – at a success rate of 53% – per fixture.

These returns have seen the player who Siavoush Fallahi dubbed a “difference maker” average a very respectable SofaScore match rating of 6.85.

As such, with Emerson having already been linked with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, it would indeed appear a wise move for Conte to axe the £42k-per-week player who Stephen Pollard dubbed “truly hilarious” this summer, and used the funds raised from his sale to finance a swoop for the much more promising Dumfries.

Broad charged for 'inappropriate' throw

Stuart Broad has been charged by ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle with throwing the ball “inappropriately” at Pakistan’s wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider, as England were frustrated in their push for victory on the third day of the second Test at Edgbasto

Andrew Miller at Edgbaston08-Aug-2010Stuart Broad has been charged by ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle with throwing the ball “inappropriately” at Pakistan’s wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider, as England were frustrated in their push for victory on the third day of the second Test at Edgbaston. The level two offence carries the possible punishment of a one-match ban, or a 50% fine. The incident occurred during a defiant seventh-wicket stand between Haider, who made 88, and Mohammad Amir, whose gutsy 16 spanned 117 deliveries. Broad fielded a drive in his followthrough, and petulantly hurled the ball at Zulqarnain, striking the player on the shoulder in an incident reminiscent of Simon Jones’ misjudged shy at Matthew Hayden during the NatWest one-day series in 2005.However, whereas Jones immediately apologised for his action on that occasion, Broad’s reaction was to gesture half-heartedly at the batsman before turning on his heel and marching back to the top of his mark, leading Salman Butt, Pakistan’s captain, to voice his disapproval at the close of the day’s play.”Cricket is a gentleman’s game but I think they got frustrated,” said Butt. “It’s not good to see people throwing balls intentionally at others, and not even excusing [themselves] properly. The throw was just one thing. There were plenty words as well, as everyone could see, and people kicking their bowling marks. It’s just frustration when you have been bowling too long.”Graeme Swann, who starred for England with career-best figures of 6 for 60, admitted that England had got frustrated as their hopes of an innings victory were thwarted, but disagreed with Butt that there had been no apology forthcoming.”Knowing Broady as I do, he certainly didn’t have any malice behind it – and he can’t throw the ball hard enough to hurt anyone anyway,” said Swann. “He apologised straightaway. It was just a sign of the frustrations that were going on.”Aside from a reprimand for excessive logos, Broad – whose father is the ICC match referee, Chris Broad – has never yet been found guilty of a breach of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, despite numerous moments in his three-year Test career when he has sailed close to the wind. His persistent failure to acknowledge the umpire when appealing for lbws has irked several onlookers, while he escaped without punishment after stepping on the ball during the Cape Town Test against South Africa back in January.

ICC World XI to tour Pakistan 'in due course' – Clarke

ECB chairman Giles Clarke has said an ICC World XI will tour Pakistan “in due course” since it is still not possible for national teams to visit the country

Cricinfo staff17-Aug-2010ECB chairman Giles Clarke has called for Pakistan’s return as a host of international matches and said an ICC World XI would tour the country “in due course” since it is still not possible for national teams to visit. Pakistan has not hosted international cricket since the March 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team.”World cricket must keep giving Pakistan cricket the chance to fund itself and move forward, to do something for the spectator in Pakistan,” Clarke wrote in the September issue of magazine. The security challenges are enormous but we cannot allow the terrorists to win. They must lose by an innings – repeatedly.”So world cricket must go back and play in Pakistan. I do not think it will be possible for individual national teams to tour yet. But with determination and courage an ICC World XI in due course will go and play against Pakistan in her great cities and there will be a marvellous atmosphere.”He said the cricketing world could not afford to forsake a country with such fervent fans and a strong history in the game. “Cricket cannot abandon a nation with such a magnificent history in the game, such wonderful players and such enthusiastic and knowledgeable supporters. It will be an historic moment when international cricket resumes in Pakistan and the first ICC team walks out.”Clarke, who is also chairman of the ICC’s Pakistan Task Team, revealed that the inability to host international cricket has resulted in the PCB’s income falling from £27 million to £10 million, “a brutal impact that few enterprises could survive; terrorism does not care about its human consequences” he said. The ECB plans to host more neutral matches featuring Pakistan to help the PCB with its finances. “The ECB intends to assist in staging more Pakistan games here [England] in 2011 and 2012,” Clarke said. “The atmosphere, the passionate support and, of course, the tremendous cricket played by the Pakistan team made it a compelling experience. The PCB’s economic needs make it imperative.”Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman welcomed the announcement and expressed his gratitude for Clarke’s efforts. “It is indeed heartening to note that the cricket fraternity is working on revival of cricket in Pakistan. I am very grateful to Mr. Giles Clarke who is a dear friend of Pakistan, for pursuing our case and working tirelessly in bringing international cricket back to Pakistan,” he said.Ijaz Butt’s views were echoed by Pakistan captain Salman Butt, who said it would be a major boost for followers of cricket in his country. “It would be wonderful to have any kind of international cricket going on in Pakistan and if all the players can come and do this favour for Pakistan cricket it would be wonderful.”People of Pakistan are cricket lovers and they are their heroes not only from Pakistan but from around the world and they love watching them. hey are great admirers of people playing around th world so if that happens it would be great for Pakistan cricket,” he said.England captain Andrew Strauss said the initiative would benefit Pakistan’s young players who would needed exposure at the highest level. “The key for them is to get as much cricket as possible. They’ve been starved over the last couple of years. For some of their younger players, the more experience they get the better they’ll be. The international cricketing community has to help out teams like Pakistan who have difficulties at home,” he said.Strauss was open to the possibility of touring Pakistan with the World XI side, provided it were declared safe. England’s 2008 tour of India was jeopardised by the Mumbai terrorist attacks, forcing the squad to head back home midway through the ODI series. Strauss was part of the Test side that returned to India to play a rescheduled series. “In the wake of Mumbai bombings, I’ve always felt it was wrong not to go somewhere if security people said it was safe. They make that judgment with as much information as they can. If they said it was safe to go I’d certainly consider it.”Strauss said that while the cricketing world had a responsibility towards Pakistan due to their situation, it should not extend to the field of play. “With the natural disasters there, some of the difficulties they’ve had in terms of terrorism over the last couple of years it’s very difficult for their players to keep their minds on the job and play at their best. We can have sympathy for them in that sense, but it doesn’t come into it on the pitch. It’s like getting into a boxing ring: you can’t have sympathy for the guy you’re competing against,” he said.

'Horrendous' – Jurgen Klopp outlines Liverpool problems despite FA Cup win over Southampton as injury crisis bites

Liverpool win 3-0 over Southampton Klopp praises two goalscoring youngstersBut highlights "pressing" as key issueGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Following a string of injuries to his first team, Klopp has been left with only the bare minimum for the Reds. The Liverpool manager started youngsters James McConnell, Conor Bradley, Bobby Clark, and Jarell Quansah, substituting Kaide Gordon and Trey Nyoni in the second half. The German was particularly impressed by scorers Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns as Liverpool went on to a comfortable 3-0 win. He also talked about having to play defender Joe Gomez in midfield for the first time ever due to a lack of options in an already tightly-packed schedule.

AdvertisementWHAT KLOPP SAID

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said when speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a special week for all of us. I do the job for a little while and you don’t have weeks like that too often. This was a tough game in a horribly difficult situation for us. We have to accept it and see who we can line up. Today the solution was Joe Gomez playing six for the first time in his life. We were all over the place in the first 15 minutes, the pressing was horrendous. We had problems and Southampton used that. Caoimhin [Kelleher] saved us a lot with top saves.

"After 15 minutes the high press got a lot better, the midfield press we tried to sort at half-time. Football is not easy and if you’ve got momentum you’ve got to keep it. We got it back and scored two wonderful goals in the second half. Danns you could see that second goal coming, he has that nose. We saw it in the final. He had that luck and he was there to score that goal. It was a wonderful game to watch."

The win on the night meant that the Merseyside club moved one step closer to their dream of winning the quadruple, having already won the Carabao Cup despite a slew of injuries to the squad that has seen players like Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo, Curtis Jones, Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic having been out for some duration on and off this season.

Warwickshire keen on Eoin Morgan

Warwickshire have made an approach to Middlesex about the possibility of signing England batsman Eoin Morgan

Cricinfo staff07-Jul-2010Warwickshire have made an approach to Middlesex about the possibility of signing England batsman Eoin Morgan. The reported that Warwickshire are keen to sign Morgan, 23, at the end of the season when his contract with Middlesex runs out and a club spokesman confirmed the situation, but added his current county had put a new deal on the table.”I can confirm that we have been contacted by Warwickshire about the possibility of signing Eoin Morgan,” he said. “I have been in contact with [Middlesex director of cricket] Angus Fraser this morning and he is very keen that Eoin stays at the club. We have offered Eoin a new contract and we hope he will sign it.”Morgan has been pivotal in England’s recent limited-overs resurgence, blending power with invention as he helped them win the World Twenty20 tournament and beat Australia 3-2 in the recent 50-over series, where he was named Man of the Series. He has enjoyed a seven-year relationship at Middlesex, who brought him over from his native Dublin. Having made his Test debut in the recent series against Bangladesh, Morgan is hoping to cement his place before the Ashes, but faces stiff competition from Jonathan Trott.Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket and also an England selector, has watched Morgan’s rise closely and is eager to bring him to a Warwickshire side struggling in Division One. However, with Morgan’s rising international stock it is debatable how much county cricket he will play in the future

Yorkshire remain well placed to earn an County Championship double overfellow strugglers Worcestershire although the hosts made heavy weather of theirtask on the third day at Scarborough.Chasing 134 for victory after stubborn resistance from the visitors tookWorcestershire to a second-innings 332, Yorkshire closed on 80 for 3, 53runs behind.Worcestershire were in big trouble on 82 for 4 at the start of the day, still trailing by 117 after the hosts posted 367 to establish a 199-runfirst-innings advantage. But the visitors refused to throw in the towel, with skipper Daryl Mitchell and James Cameron taking few risks against the pace of Ryan Sidebottom and TimBresnan. The fifth-wicket pair had just batted through the first hour when Cameron droveat a full-length ball from Ajmal Shahzad and Adil Rashid held on at third slip. Mitchell got stuck on 46 for an hour before cover-driving Richard Pyrah to reach his half-century with his ninth boundary.Gareth Andrew was then put down when on 15 by Rashid, who split his right indexfinger in dropping the fairly straightforward chance and spent spells off thefield either side of lunch.Worcestershire lost another wicket before lunch when Pyrah bowled Mitchellthrough the gate for 55 from 141 balls with 10 fours. After the break, Scott was clean bowled by a splendid yorker from Shahzad to end his resistance on nine.Saeed Ajmal shrugged off a blow to the side of his face from Bresnan to hitShahzad for a legside boundary to finally wipe out the arrears, but Andrew thenspoiled a neatly compiled half-century by slashing wildly at a loose ball fromPyrah to be caught behind for 57.Yorkshire were not making things easy for themselves, however, and Saeed Ajmalshould have departed for 19 only for Gary Ballance to grass the chance at secondslip, his third drop of the match. That escape allowed Ajmal and Jack Shantry to take their stand to 54 in 11overs before Ajmal fell to a great delivery from Pyrah for 47, the ball seamingoff the edge of the bat to Jonny Bairstow.Worcestershire, at 270 for 9, still had plenty of fight left in them and thelast-wicket pair of Shantry and Richardson went on the rampage, aided by furtherbad fielding lapses. The hapless Ballance fluffed another chance in the slips when he droppedShantry on 21 off Bresnan, and the batsman celebrated the return of Shahzad bysmashing his first ball back over the bowler’s head for four and also takingboundaries off the next two deliveries.Shantry sailed past his previous best knock of 13 not out and runs flowed asYorkshire and their fans became increasingly frustrated. The score had rattled on to 332, with the last-wicket stand worth 62, when Sidebottom bowled Richardson for 31 just before tea. Shantry’s unbeaten 47 came off 73 balls with eight fours.Yorkshire began their run chase after the interval and soon suffered a setbackas Adam Lyth was run out by a direct hit at the bowler’s end from AlanRichardson after Joe Root had called for a second run.Root then edged Ajmal to slip where he was dropped by Mitchell with the scoreon 19, and Yorkshire were put under further pressure on 29 when Anthony McGrathfell lbw to Richardson, whose 11-over opening spell conceded only 15 runs.A well-flighted ball by Ajmal lured Andrew Gale forward for him to be stumpedby Scott but Root stayed calm under pressure and will begin the final day on 31,with Bairstow unbeaten on 12.

Issa Diop proving to be one of the bargains of the summer

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United confirmed the signing of centre-back Issa Diop from Toulouse on June 19, 2018.

According to the BBC, the Hammers splashed out a then-club record £22m to bring the 22-year-old to the London Stadium.

Such a hefty fee for a young defender, with no Premier League experience behind him, represented a big gamble on the part of Irons boss Manuel Pellegrini.

Check out the video below to find out why West Ham’s potential sale of Marko Arnautovic sets such a dangerous precedent…

Diop quickly earned the Chilean coach’s trust, as he started the Hammers’ third league game of the season, against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The France under-21 international has played every minute of league football since, as per Transfermarkt.

All of Diop’s 21 Premier League appearances so far this term have been starts, demonstrating just how quickly he became an integral part of the Hammers’ rearguard. The numbers back up Pellegrini’s decision to invest so much faith in the young defender, too.

According to WhoScored’s stats, the 6’4” centre-back has made an average of 2.2 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 4.5 clearances per match. Those are impressive numbers, especially for a youngster in his first year in England.

However, his pass accuracy rating of 87% is truly the standout statistic. Such composure and tidiness on the ball is a rare commodity in a centre-back, and flags Diop up as a very modern defender.

Diop looks set to have a bright future in the game, but if he keeps his current rate of progression up, West Ham could find it hard to ensure his future lies in east London unless they make big strides forward themselves.

What looked like a big fee in the summer can be regarded as a positive bargain now.

‘It’s iconic’ – Why the Champions League anthem matters to Arsenal as Jorginho reacts to Gunners hearing famous European tune for the first time in six years

Arsenal are back in the Champions League for the first time since 2016-17, with Jorginho explaining why the competition’s famous anthem means so much.

North London giants back in the big timeWaited a long time to grace such a stagePlayers loving every minute of European actionWHAT HAPPENED?

The Gunners finally forced their way back into the Premier League’s top four last season – as they spent much of the campaign challenging for the title – and are now gracing the grandest of European stages for the first time in over six years.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT THEY SAID

Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard and Bukayo Saka struggled to keep smiles from their faces when hearing “the Champiooooooons” ring out around Emirates Stadium ahead of a meeting with PSV on September 1, with Jorginho telling the club’s of why that tune still matters to experienced international performers: “It’s iconic, it’s so remarkable. It was stuck in our heads when we were kids so you just kind of go back to your childhood when you listen to it. It seems so far away when you’re a kid to play in, and that’s why I think it’s really special. I was in Brazil as a little kid watching every single game of the Champions League, watching Barcelona, Milan and Arsenal with the ball, and the music. It’s a competition the whole world stops to watch, so to be here now, we are living our dreams. I could see a lot of excitement for the PSV game and I could feel the emotional side of it as well. They were excited to hear the music, and even in training when we trained for the first time with the Champions League ball. They couldn’t wait any more. It was nice to see the boys achieving these dreams in their lives. It’s always amazing to see and I’m really pleased that I was there with them.”

Jorginho has previously graced the Champions League with Napoli and Chelsea, claiming the ultimate prize while at Stamford Bridge in 2021. He added on fulfilling a boyhood dream: “When you hold that trophy, so, so many things are going through your head. It’s impossible to explain, it’s just an amazing feeling. That’s living your actual dream, going back to when you were a child and watching your idols playing and winning.”

Brazil World Cup 2022 squad, predicted line-up versus South Korea and star players

Brazil are through to the last 16 of the World Cup, but who is available to Tite for the round of 16 clash against South Korea?

Five-time World Cup champions Brazil are the most successful team in the history of the competition, but 2002 was the last time the Selecao got their hands on the coveted trophy.

There were quarter-final exits in 2006, 2010 and 2018, while they had to settle for fourth spot in 2014 after a tournament to forget.

Now it's up to the likes of Neymar, Vinicius Junior and more to end the Selecao's drought and finally bring home the trophy once more.

They went past Serbia and Switzerland but lost to Cameroon in their final group game. However, they have successfully booked their berth in the round of 16 as group winners.

A spirited South Korea now awaits in the next round and Tite's side have to be at their very best if they want to reach the quarter-finals.

Brazil received a major blow just three days before their last-16 tie as full-back Alex Telles and forward Gabriel Jesus were ruled out of the World Cup due to injury.

Brazil have no shortage of options in defence.

Thiago Silva and Marquinhos have been starting through the middle, but Eder Militao and Bremer are both regular starters at some of Europe's biggest clubs, too, and were given minutes against Cameroon.

And there is possibly even more strength in depth in midfield.

Manchester United duo Casemiro and Fred are solid options in the holding role, while Fabinho's inclusion provides Brazil with yet another outstanding defensive candidate.

Lucas Paqueta offers a bit more creativity on the ball, but will be made to work for his spot in the XI thanks to Bruno Guimaraes' inspiring form at Newcastle earning him a place in the squad.

Brazil's wealth of options up front is another reason why they are one of the favourites.

There's Neymar, Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Antony and Richarlison. The list just goes on and on.
