Six reasons why Man Utd are struggling to score goals: Marcus Rashford toiling in the middle, injured star signing and a draining U.S. tour

Erik ten Hag's side have struck just once in their two opening Premier League games and badly need to improve in attack against Nottingham Forest

Manchester United used to be known for fast starts, and not just under Sir Alex Ferguson. Even in seasons which turned out to be disappointments, the Red Devils could be relied upon to begin with a bang and score lots of goals.

They began the 2021-22 season by blitzing Leeds 5-1. The previous campaign, despite losing their opener to Crystal Palace, they beat Brighton 3-2 in their first away game. In 2019-20, they hammered Chelsea 4-0 on the opening day. In Jose Mourinho's first season, they scored five goals in their first two games. In his second, it was eight.

In both of Erik ten Hag's seasons in charge, however, they have scored just one goal in their first two matches. After the scrappiest of 1-0 wins over Wolves, United failed to score in their 2-0 defeat at Tottenham, and there is a familiar feeling to how they began the Dutchman's first season, with a home defeat to Brighton then the harrowing 4-0 loss at Brentford.

United made amends for their bad start by beating Liverpool in their third game of last season, and they at least have a kind fixture coming up next, at home to Nottingham Forest. But even though they ended up finishing third, they only scored 58 goals. That was at least 10 fewer than any other side to finish in the top six and as many as Brentford, who came ninth.

The scarcity of goals was something the Dutchman sought to address over the summer, but despite spending over £165 million ($209m) on new signings, United still look alarmingly lightweight in attack…

GettyHojlund held back by injury

United's top target for the summer was a striker, and Rasmus Hojlund was ultimately the man they chose to lead their attack for the next few years, opting to sign the 20-year-old for £72 million ($92m) from Atalanta rather than spend even more on Harry Kane.

However, United's great striking hope arrived with a back injury and is still waiting to make his debut. Hojlund is 6'2 in height and blessed with explosive pace and power, which will make him an asset once he recovers, potentially in time for the trip to Arsenal on September 3.

United spent most of last season without a proper striker due to Anthony Martial's fitness troubles, Cristiano Ronaldo's problems and eventual departure, and Wout Weghorst's lack of ability. Indeed, the Dutchman was often deployed as a No.10 rather than a No.9. So it is not wholly surprising that United should be haunted by the same problems up front as last season until Hojlund makes his long-awaited debut.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesRashford less potent through the middle

Another consequence of Hojlund being injured means that Marcus Rashford has had to deputise at centre-forward. Last season was the most prolific of Rashford's career, but his best moments came when coming in off either wing, such as when he terrorised Barcelona at Camp Nou or scored after a sensational slalom run from beyond the halfway life against Burnley.

Rashford admitted to Gary Neville on over the summer that his favourite position is on the left of the attack as he can get more involved in the game. He said: "Left is easier to stay in the game, and from when I was young I've always wanted to be involved in the game. That's why I struggle playing centre-forward sometimes because of my patience. You might not touch the ball for 20 minutes, and then your first touch might be an opportunity to score. You have to be mentally switched on. Whereas on the left. it's more natural, feels more normal."

Rashford has had to led the line in the first two matches and he has not looked his usual self. He had four shots against Wolves, but three of them were blocked. He had three opportunities against Spurs, one of which was blocked, one saved by Guglielmo Vicario and the other, a free header after a rabona cross from Bruno Fernandes, sailed over the bar.

When he was substituted, he was seen sulking on the bench. The striker who scored 30 goals last season has a total of two shots on target so far this campaign, and Hojlund's return cannot come soon enough for him either.

GettyUnderperforming wingers

United have always been renowned for their exciting wing play, but their wide players have struggled to get going, while Rashford playing centrally is only part of the problem. Antony still has a lot to prove after an underwhelming debut season in which he scored only four Premier League goals and provided just two assists, as many as in the Eredivisie with Ajax. His £85m ($107m) price tag adds yet more pressure on him and he is not even coming close to justifying the fee United paid for him.

Antony has not made a strong start to this campaign, hammering the post with a good opportunity against Spurs and creating little of note against Wolves. Alejandro Garnacho, who lit up last season, has also been disappointing, and only added weight to the argument that he is far more effective as a substitute than in the starting XI.

Jadon Sancho deserves to start in place of Garnacho against Forest after being benched for the first two games, but he has looked shorn of confidence and spark in most of his appearances since his move from Borussia Dortmund, also failing to live up to his own £74m ($93m) transfer fee.

GettySpurning big chances

While United have hardly played well in their opening two games, they have at least created chances, indicating that the reason they have scored so few goals is more down to an inability to finish off moves than craft them. Against Tottenham, they had 14 shots in the first half, more than in any away game since they took on Blackburn Rovers in October 2008, when they were defending Premier League and European champions.

Rashford and Antony spurned good opportunities in north London, but the clearest fell to Fernandes, who headed over the bar after a dream cross from Luke Shaw. After the Tottenham game, Ten Hag emphasised how important it is to score the first goal in the Premier League.

Making promising starts but failing to take their chances and then losing was a familiar theme last season, with United paying a high price for their profligacy against West Ham and Brighton, in particular. They are bound to create opportunities against Forest; they need to take them.

From Henry to Vieira – Where are Arsenal's 'Invincibles' now?

Arsene Wenger's iconic side made history in 2003-04 by going through the entire Premier League season undefeated

The date May 15, 2004, will be forever etched in the history of Arsenal Football Club because, on that day, they became the first English club to win the Premier League without losing a single game. Almost two decades on, it's a feat that has still not been equalled.

Arsene Wenger's legendary side ended their historic campaign with 90 points from 38 matches, winning 26 games and drawing 12.

Below, we run through the members of a team that became known as 'The Invincibles', and reveal where they are now…

GettyJens Lehmann

The German goalkeeper, who also lined out for Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan during his playing days, enjoyed two spells at Arsenal

After retiring from professional football in 2011, he returned to the Gunners as a goalkeeping coach in 2017 and stayed at the club for a year.

In 2019, Augsburg hired him as an assistant coach but, the following year, he joined the advisory board of Hertha Berlin. In May 2021, he was removed from his role.

The Cameroonian full-back played at Arsenal from 2000 to 2007. He then moved to Portsmouth in 2007 where he spent the next two seasons. In 2010, he announced his retirement from professional football after spending a season at Cordoba.

Lauren is currently an Arsenal ambassador for the African continent. He is also a respected media pundit who covers La Liga and in 2022 he was appointed as a FIFA technical expert for talent development across Africa.

Kolo Toure

Toure played at Arsenal from 2002 to 2009. He later moved to Manchester City, Liverpool and Celtic. He retired from professional football in 2017 and joined the coaching staff of Ivory Coast's Under-23s.

In September 2017, he joined Brendan Rodgers' coaching staff at Celtic and followed the Irishman to Leicester City two years later.

The English defender controversially joined Arsenal in 2001 from bitter rivals Tottenham and spent five seasons at the club. He later played for Portsmouth and Notts County FC before returning to Arsenal for the second half of the 2009-10 season. He last played at Newcastle United before retiring from professional football in 2011.

In 2017, Sol Campbell joined the Trinidad and Tobago national team as an assistant coach to Dennis Lawrence. A year later, he took over as the coach of Macclesfield Town. In October 2019, Campbell moved on to League One side Southend United, where he worked as their head coach until June 2020.

Brazil World Cup 2022 squad, predicted line-up versus South Korea and star players

Brazil are through to the last 16 of the World Cup, but who is available to Tite for the round of 16 clash against South Korea?

Five-time World Cup champions Brazil are the most successful team in the history of the competition, but 2002 was the last time the Selecao got their hands on the coveted trophy.

There were quarter-final exits in 2006, 2010 and 2018, while they had to settle for fourth spot in 2014 after a tournament to forget.

Now it's up to the likes of Neymar, Vinicius Junior and more to end the Selecao's drought and finally bring home the trophy once more.

They went past Serbia and Switzerland but lost to Cameroon in their final group game. However, they have successfully booked their berth in the round of 16 as group winners.

A spirited South Korea now awaits in the next round and Tite's side have to be at their very best if they want to reach the quarter-finals.

Brazil received a major blow just three days before their last-16 tie as full-back Alex Telles and forward Gabriel Jesus were ruled out of the World Cup due to injury.

Brazil have no shortage of options in defence.

Thiago Silva and Marquinhos have been starting through the middle, but Eder Militao and Bremer are both regular starters at some of Europe's biggest clubs, too, and were given minutes against Cameroon.

Dani Alves continues to defy the odds as he appeared in Brazil's final group game too.

And there is possibly even more strength in depth in midfield.

Manchester United duo Casemiro and Fred are solid options in the holding role, while Fabinho's inclusion provides Brazil with yet another outstanding defensive candidate.

Lucas Paqueta offers a bit more creativity on the ball, but will be made to work for his spot in the XI thanks to Bruno Guimaraes' inspiring form at Newcastle earning him a place in the squad.

Brazil's wealth of options up front is another reason why they are one of the favourites.

There's Neymar, Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Antony and Richarlison. The list just goes on and on.

And that's not even taken players like Rodrygo and Gabriel Martinelli into account.

It's fair to say that plenty of coaches are envious of Brazil's attack in Qatar!

Umar Akmal keeps Leicestershire flying

Umar Akmal scored an unbeaten half-century as Leicestershire put a brake on Birmingham’s NatWest T20 Blast hot streak with a comfortable seven-wicket win at Edgbaston

ECB/PA19-Jun-2015
ScorecardUmar Akmal cracked 52 not out of 38 balls and sealed victory with a four•Getty ImagesUmar Akmal scored an unbeaten half-century as Leicestershire put a brake on Birmingham’s NatWest T20 Blast hot streak with a comfortable seven-wicket win at Edgbaston.Birmingham were hunting their fifth successive win in the North Group and posted a solid total of 160 for 5 thanks mainly to Tim Ambrose’s third T20 half-century, a well-judged unbeaten 66 from 54 balls with seven fours and a six. But Leicestershire bounced back from the previous night’s defeat at Derby to reach 164 for three with nine balls to spare.Insights

Leicestershire’s batting won this match as much as anything. While often perceived to be a small county lacking star quality, Mark Cosgrove is one of those rare and valuable players who despite not being quite good enough for international cricket can dominate domestic circuits; Niall O’Brien (and Kevin, who was on international duty) are also regularly available for domestic cricket despite being international quality players. Umar Akmal is in scintillating T20 form and will be missed. Of course, they cannot continue to rely on three or four batsmen and their local players have to perform as well but Leicestershire needed this win following a match lost to rain and defeat to Derbyshire on Thursday.

Mark Cosgrove laid the platform with a blistering 44 from 23 balls and then Niall O’Brien and Umar Akmal saw them home with an unbroken stand of 93 in 70 balls. After Birmingham chose to bat, Leicestershire struck two big blows early. Varun Chopra lifted Olly Freckingham to cover and Ian Bell’s blistering form in this season’s tournament (128 from 89 balls in two innings) was ended by a brilliant catch by Tom Wells. Bell was looking dangerous again on 19 from 13 balls and hit Clint McKay’s first two balls for four but then drove the next to mid-off where Wells flung himself to his right to make the catch. That was Leicestershire’s last success for a while as William Porterfield and Ambrose built the innings’ only partnership of substance. They added 80 from 58 balls before the former fell to another fine catch by Wells, this time at long-off.Laurie Evans scratched around for 13 and could drop out next week when Brendon McCullum makes his debut. But Ambrose kept working the ball around skilfully, though young left-arm spinner Jamie Sykes distinguished himself with four tight overs for just 23.Leicestershire got off to a flier, reaching 50 in the fourth as Cosgrove fed voraciously on some overpitched bowling. The Australian raced to 44 from with seven fours, one six before falling lbw to Jeetan Patel’s fifth delivery. That was 71 for 3 and Birmingham sensed an opportunity to start a collapse but O’Brien and Akmal played it perfectly. Under no pressure to go for big shots they milked the bowling as the Foxes won at a canter, Akmal notching a half-century on his farewell appearance as stand-in overseas player for Kiwi star Grant Elliott who will return next week.

India could revisit DRS stance

India could give up on their demand of 100% accuracy if their reservations against umpire’s-call decisions in lbws are addressed

Sidharth Monga at the Gabba20-Dec-20145:26

‘Umpiring needs to be consistent’ – Dhoni

India could give up on their demand of 100% accuracy if their reservations against umpire’s-call decisions in lbws are addressed. There is a growing feeling among the team that many of the marginal calls tend to go against them, which cannot be overturned by DRS as it stands today. It is a big departure from the days when India were happy with the uncertainty of human error.”Okay, we can still get our heads around its not being 100%,” a source in the team told ESPNcricinfo, “but all the marginal calls are going against us. The umpire’s call is one of our major objections with the system.”At the press conference later in the day, MS Dhoni echoed the view. There has been increasing pressure on India to better articulate their stance against the DRS, with a few howlers going against them, howlers that wouldn’t have needed any sophisticated technology to be overruled. In Adelaide, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane and Wriddhmian Saha fell to catches that basic replays would have overruled. Cheteshwar Pujara and R Ashwin had to deal with wrong calls in Brisbane, calls that simple slow-motion replays would have corrected. However, it was the marginal decisions that stuck with Dhoni too; he feels the DRS is being used more to “justify” the umpire’s decisions than to arrive at the right calls.”It is a very interesting question, but what is more important is that there are a lot of 50-50 decisions that are not going in our favour,” he said, when asked if there was any possibility of India revising their position, given the circumstances. “We are at the receiving end more often than not. And what happens in DRS, even when the DRS is around, those decisions won’t go in our favour.”Because if the umpire has given out, you take DRS, it is still out, because DRS is often used to justify the decision given by the umpire. What is important is to use DRS to give the right decision irrespective of whether the umpire has given it out or not out. There are a lot of ways to use the DRS, but this is something that needs to be put in a specific way. That it doesn’t really matter if the umpire has given out or not out, if the ball hits the stumps [in projection] it is out; if half the ball hits the stumps you are out.”Dhoni did empathise with the umpires, but wasn’t impressed with their consistency. Asked if he was happy with the umpiring in this game, Dhoni said: “It can certainly improve but also it is very tough for those two individuals. Not to forget it has been very hot. They stand there for five days. We come back. Apart from lunch and tea they don’t get any break. When we bat they are still on the field. When Australia bat they are still on the field.”It is tough on them, but I always try to tell them, ‘Try to be consistent through the Test.’ There have been quite a few 50-50 calls that we are on the receiving end of. Irrespective of whether there is DRS or not, we will be on the receiving end according to the decision given by the umpire.”

'The first time I have batted so long' – Karun

Karun entered the match on the back of a patchy season, having garnered just 381 runs from 15 innings. He has virtually doubled the tally with his unbeaten 310

AMOL KARHADKAR IN MUMBAI10-Mar-2015He hugged his partner KL Rahul after scoring only his second fifty of the season on the second day of Karnataka’s Ranji Trophy final against Tamil Nadu in Mumbai. Later that day, he took his helmet off and raised his arms towards the dressing room after completing his first hundred of the season.Early on Tuesday, the third day of the match, Karun Nair walked down the pitch to Malolan Rangarajan and completed a single to bring up his maiden 150. It was followed by a customary handshake with Rahul. And as he continued to rack up records, the celebrations became increasingly muted.Batsmanship of highest class – GR Viswanath

GR Viswanath, whose record for Karnataka’s highest score in a Ranji final was bettered by Karun Nair, has heaped praise on the young batsman.
“Karun’s effort over the past two days is commendable. I watched him achieve the feat on television. Scoring 300-plus runs in a Ranji Trophy final is amazing. The delightful batsman’s concentration was spot on,” Viswanath said from Bangalore.
“I’m glad somebody has broken my record [247, against Uttar Pradesh in 1977-78], especially a youngster. Karun richly deserves the triple hundred. His temperament was brilliant and selection of shots commendable. He never took any risks and I would say it was batsmanship of the highest class. At the start of the match he was short of runs in the season, but he chose the right platform to beautifully showcase his craftsmanship after a well- made century the previous day.”
Karun, along with KL Rahul, pulled the team out of trouble with a 386-run partnership for the sixth wicket that bailed Karnataka out and put them on course for an eighth Ranji Trophy title. Vishwanath was delighted with the duo’s effort.
“At five down, Rahul and Karun applied themselves and carried on admirably. It was unfortunate that Rahul got out to a tired shot, but the duo had by then set up a platform for what now looks like an inevitable Ranji Trophy victory for the second consecutive year. It is not often that we get to see a team with five wickets down come back to rewrite so many records,” he said.

After reverse-sweeping Rangarajan for his 44th boundary to score only the second triple century by a Karnataka batsman and the second ever in a Ranji final, Karun was congratulated by the bowler and he then took off his helmet and raised his arms towards the dressing room. It is an innings that could his take his career to the next level, but he needed some prodding when it came to the celebrations.”It was a good feeling. [R] Samarth had told me to do some other celebration when I reach 300, but I didn’t do anything different. I don’t feel the necessity to celebrate much, it just doesn’t happen at that time,” Karun said.Except for the first 35 minutes of Karnataka’s innings on the first evening, Karun has been on the field throughout the match. He has occupied the crease for 13 hours and 35 minutes, almost three times the duration of Tamil Nadu’s innings. He has weathered three new balls thus far, and has continued to keep his instincts in check during the rigorous knock.”I don’t think before yesterday I had batted for a day also. This was the first time I’ve batted so long so I was pretty happy. I think I started feeling tired at tea and after tea I was just drinking a lot of water and stretching a bit,” he said.Karun entered the match on the back of a patchy season, with 381 runs from 15 innings. He has virtually doubled the tally with his unbeaten 310. He admitted the biggest challenge for him was coping with the conditions, not the opposition bowlers.”The first half hour was the most challenging. We were looking at playing out the first half hour and then we knew that it will be all done. I think it was more about being patient. The field was spread out so I had to be patient and look for singles,” he said.If he continues to adapt to different formats, he will continue to be on the radar of the national selectors, who watched his stupendous knock from the President’s Box at the Wankhede Stadium.
