The hosts have lost 12 of their last 13 meetings with Atletico de Madrid in La Liga, with the only exception during this streak being a 0-0 draw at Jose Zorrilla in October 2019.

On the other hand, following their 3-0 win at the Civitas Metropolitano in January 2023, Atletico de Madrid could complete a La Liga double without conceding over Real Valladolid in a season for the fourth time in their history (1948/49, 1994/95 and 2013/14).

Moreover, the Rojiblancos have won seven of their last eight La Liga matches (L1) and will be looking for another three points against a 14th-placed Valladolid side who have just two victories in their past five matches.

Patterson ton leads NSW to draw

Kurtis Patterson’s second century against Western Australia took New South Wales to the safety of a draw in the day/night Sheffield Shield match at the WACA Ground.

Mumbai, Sunrisers look to break early rut

Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians will battle to move up the points table when they meet in Hyderabad

Nannes: Dhawan’s form concerns me

Big pictureIt is early days yet, but both Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians find themselves in the wrong half of the IPL points table. Sunrisers have lost both matches till date, by sizeable margins, while Mumbai have lost two of their first three. The losers of Monday’s clash in Hyderabad could find themselves in the position of early season laggards. The last time the two teams met in Hyderabad, for the final group match of the 2015 season, Mumbai walloped the hosts by nine wickets, with 37 balls to spare. The personnel on both sides is likely to be largely similar this time around. A similar result, though, would be a big blow to Sunrisers. To turn things around, Sunrisers will need greater tactical shrewdness from their captain. David Warner’s bowling changes have been baffling at times, especially his decision to hold back Bangladesh left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman in key moments. Against Mumbai Indians’ big hitters, such tactical errors could be costly. In the spotlightMustafizur has stood head and shoulders above the other bowlers in his side. In the face of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s onslaught, he was the only Sunrisers bowler to emerge with tidy figures. Against Kolkata Knight Riders, he produced the ball of the match – a swinging, dipping yorker that floored both Andre Russell and his middle stump. His excellent disguise and control of his cutters has been an ever-present threat. If he is unleashed early enough against Mumbai Indians, he could make a difference. The name is Pandya. Krunal Pandya. Thus far, Krunal has been in the shadows of younger brother Hardik, but against Gujarat Lions he outshone his sibling with bat and ball. A lower-order cameo of 20 off 11 was followed by tidy figures of 1 for 20 in four overs. Krunal’s left-arm spin could be the perfect foil for Harbhajan Singh’s offspin. Like Hardik, Krunal is also a live wire in the field. That’s quite a handy all-round package.Team newsWith Eoin Morgan firing in the last match, Sunrisers are unlikely to change their combination.Sunrisers Hyderabad (probable) 1 David Warner (capt), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Moises Henriques, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Deepak Hooda, 6 Naman Ojha (wk), 7 Ashish Reddy, 8 Karn Sharma, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Barinder SranKieron Pollard has had a low-key start to the season, scoring exactly 1 run per match and not getting a bowl. There might be a temptation to replace him with Corey Anderson or Martin Guptill. If it is the latter, the batting order might need a re-jig, with one of the openers dropping down. Hardik Pandya might also drop down the order.Mumbai Indians (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 Ambati Rayudu, 4 Jos Buttler, 5 Kieron Pollard/Corey Anderson/Martin Guptill, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Harbhajan Singh, 8 Krunal Pandya, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Mitchell McClenaghan, 11 Jasprit BumrahPitch and conditionsThe previous match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium saw Knight Riders easily chase down a target of 143. Generally, this venue provides pitches with decent bounce and carry, with runs on offer. There is no rain forecast.Stats and trivia Warner and Morgan have scored 144 of Sunrisers’ 324 runs this season Bhuvneshwar Kumar has an average of 14.44 and an economy rate of 5.41 against Mumbai Indians in the IPL Mumbai have lost both their home matches and won their only away match so far this season

Barker late blast makes it Bears' day

Jonathan Trott began life in international retirement with an assured 42 but his innings was a mere footnote to a rollicking opening day’s play

Paul Edwards at Edgbaston17-May-2015
ScorecardKeith Barker belted•Getty ImagesCricket has a whimsical gift for misdirection. On a day when many spectators were concerned to see how Jonathan Trott would perform on his return to the county circuit, it was the batting of Ian Westwood and Keith Barker, his Warwickshire colleagues, which eventually commanded more attention than Trott’s innings of 42.Close followers of the domestic game might greet this development with nothing more than a knowing smile. Westwood has been in excellent form this season. His 88 on the first day of this match against Durham took his Championship aggregate for 2015 to 439 runs in seven innings. When he was bowled three overs before tea by a fine ball from Graham Onions which moved off the seam, the compact left-hander with an enviable gift for clipping the ball away on the leg side had provided his side with the foundation upon which their very substantial total was built. So well had Westwood been batting that his dismissal, after a knock which included 14 fours and a six into the Hollies Stand, came as rather a shock. It also occurred in the middle of a difficult period in Warwickshire’s innings, one in which they also lost Laurie Evans, who had been caught behind for 45 by Phil Mustard in Onions’s previous over when playing the loosest of cuts at a ball unsuitable for the stroke. And when Tim Ambrose was so discomfited by the extra bounce extracted by John Hastings that he gave Mustard his third catch a couple of overs after tea, Varun Chopra’s team were 227 for 6 and in danger of wasting the advantage gained when their captain had won the toss. This did not happen, though. On the contrary, some very positive batting by Rikki Clarke and Barker saw 103 runs added in 68 minutes prior to the taking of the second new ball, 28 of those runs coming in consecutive overs from the Pavilion End bowled by Paul Coughlin and Scott Borthwick.Chris Rushworth, as is his skill these days, restored a little control to Durham’s attack and had Clarke lbw for 36 in the 81st over. The ball may have struck the allrounder a little high on the pad and Barker certainly did all he could to avoid a similar fate during the remainder of the evening session. Dropped by Paul Collingwood at slip and Calum MacLeod in the gully off successive balls from Hastings when only 16, Barker used his bat to very good effect and he goes into the second day on 85 not out and with a fifth first-class century beckoning. At the other end Jeetan Patel hit Rushworth for a straight six, straight drove Hastings and Coughlin and reached his 46-ball fifty off the last ball of the day. Durham’s bowlers conceded 199 runs off 32 overs in the final session. But what of Trott? Only 13 days after he had announced his retirement from Test cricket and 16 after the vicious short-pitched ball from Shannon Gabriel which had made that decision something of a relief for his many friends and supporters, the Warwickshire No. 3 batted in a style both familiar and reassuring during his 90-minute inningsGreeted by a warm ovation when he came to the wicket with his side on 18 for 2 after Onions and Rushworth had removed Chopra and William Porterfield, Trott clipped his first ball for four and quickly settled into a recognisable rhythm. This was characterised by frequent marking of the crease, strolls to square leg, and decisive strokes, whether in defence or attack. Renowned as something of an enforcer in the England team, Trott helped Westwood deal with the new ball and one can foresee a few seasons in which he will take care of such business for Warwickshire. Further boundaries followed off Coughlin and Hastings but so did sensible decisions to leave the ball alone. Was Trott tested quite as he had been in Barbados? He was not. Was his technique given a thorough examination by a Division One attack? That did happen and Trott coped with it all well. It was a something of a surprise when he was leg before to Onions’s third ball after lunch.”Trotty’s been fine,” said Dougie Brown, Warwickshire’s Director of Cricket. “This is an environment that he knows and one that he trusts. He responds really well to it and we are delighted to have him back. He looked to be in good order on what was quite a tricky pitch and I thought he played really well. There’ll be a number of bowlers round the country that would prefer it if he was still playing international cricket. He’s a rock in our batting order.”

Glamorgan work to do in push for record

Glamorgan’s push for what would be a record-breaking victory was held up by a combination of determined batting and rain on the third day of the Division Two match against Derbyshire at Chesterfield

ECB/PA08-Jul-2015
ScorecardJacques Rudolph still hopes to catch a fifth successive win [file picture]•Gallo ImagesGlamorgan’s push for what would be a record-breaking victory was held up by a combination of determined batting and rain on the third day of the Division Two match against Derbyshire at Chesterfield. When the weather closed in with 23 overs still to bowl, Derbyshire were 37 without loss following-on, still 121 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat and with a lot of batting ahead of them to deny Glamorgan five consecutive championship victories for the first time in their history. The home side fell nine short of the follow-on target when they were bowled out for 252 with opener Billy Godleman the only batsmen to pass 50 while seamer Ruaidhri Smith returned career-best figures of three for 23 in 11 overs. The leaden skies at the start of play made conditions good for bowling and Derbyshire were soon in trouble as the ball swung for Graham Wagg and Michael Hogan.Derbyshire needed a substantial stand between Godleman and skipper Wayne Madsen but that was ended in the fourth over of the morning when Hogan found some late movement to have Madsen caught at third slip for 24.Godleman’s resistance ended when Wagg swung one back in and when Wes Durston was squared up in the former Derbyshire all-rounder’s next over, the home side had lost three wickets for seven runs in 17 balls.Shiv Thakor and Alex Hughes added 44 in 17 overs but David Lloyd had Hughes taken at second slip and Thakor should have gone on 17 in the next over from Craig Meschede but Hogan spilled a low chance at third slip.Smith accounted for Harvey Hosein and Tony Palladino and when Thakor skied a sweep at Andrew Salter, Tom Taylor tore into Hogan, pulling and driving him for three sixes before the Australian bowled him on the stroke of tea. With conditions unsettled and still favourable for bowling, Glamorgan immediately enforced the follow on but Godleman and Hamish Rutherford were largely untroubled in the 18 overs before bad light resulted in the sixth and final stoppage of the day.It was a frustrating end for Glamorgan, but skipper Jacques Rudolph said: “I thought the way we bowled in those last 17 overs we deserved one or two wickets. They played really well but I still think the game is wide open and if we start well in the morning we can put them under some real pressure.”Madsen said: “I think with the forecast being fair tomorrow we are going to have to bat most of the day which is possible. We batted for 80 odd overs in the first innings and we will probably have to bat for over 110 and get ahead so the realistic objective for us is to try and bat through the day.”

It is good to win close games – Dhoni

A round-up of all IPL related news on April 10, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Apr-20152:18

‘Early strikes always kept us in the game’ – Nehra

Dhoni relieved after ‘important’ winChennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni was pleased that his team-mates could keep their cool when it mattered most, as the hosts edged past Delhi Daredevils by one run at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Super Kings had 19 to defend off the last over, bowled by Dwayne Bravo, and despite three meaty blows from Albie Morkel, including a four off the last ball, they held on to open their campaign with victory.”You have to hold on to your nerves,” Dhoni said after the game. “I thought the last one was in the slot, and Bravo won’t be happy with the ball he bowled, but it is good to win close games. It was important to win because this was our first match here in a long time. Not just for us, but for the crowd, because they appreciate opposition too. A crowd you want to do well in front of.”Super Kings, having been inserted, were restricted by spin to 150 for 7, but made a great start to their defence as Ashish Nehra ran through Daredevils’ top order to leave them rattling at 39 for 3. Dhoni had high praise for the seamer, who he believed bowled “effortlessly”.”Nehra is good, at times he is prone to injuries, but he backs himself, which is good for a fast bowler,” Dhoni said. “It is good to see him the way he bowls. He has kept himself fit. He is one Indian pace who bowls pace effortlessly.”Nehra, who collected 3 for 25 and was adjudged the Man of the Match, said that despite posting only a middling total, Super Kings always backed themselves to claw their way back into the game.”These totals of 140-160 are always tricky to chase,” Nehra told . “These are the games that get close in the end about 70-80% of times. If you bowl well, you can really take it till the end. We did that today and kept our nerves in the end.”I have been someone who always looks to attack. When you’re defending a total of 150, you have to pick wickets upfront and that’s what we looked to do today. We kept it tight and got wickets.”Coulter-Nile upbeat despite close defeatDaredevils seamer Nathan Coulter-Nile believes his team can take a lot of heart from their one-run loss to Super Kings. Daredevils, who finished bottom of the table in the last two editions of the IPL, came into the game with a completely revamped squad, but Coulter-Nile felt the team has much better depth this time to cope with the hectic two-month schedule.”If you don’t win games, they will either put you out of the team or they will change the team,” Coulter-Nile told . “Last year we won only two games and things had to change. That’s what has happened. I believe we have a really good bunch of people around now and we have more depth than we did last year. I hope we see people filling the gaps and take us over the rope.”Coulter-Nile picked up 3 for 30, including the crucial scalps of Brendon McCullum and Suresh Raina early in the innings, as Daredevils kept Super Kings to 150, a total Coulter-Nile felt his team shouldn’t have had trouble chasing down.”We were pretty happy as 140-150 is always chaseable. I thought this was a beautiful wicket for cricket. Given that they were 59 after the first six overs, 150 was a pretty decent score for us to restrict them to.”It was one hell of a game of cricket and that’s what everyone wants to see. You don’t take too much heart out of a lost game. We want to win every match, so it’s a bit disappointing.”

J&K take historic win over Mumbai

Jammu & Kashmir shocked domestic heavyweights Mumbai with a historic four-wicket win by chasing down 237 on the last day at the Wankhede Stadium

Devashish Fuloria at the Wankhede Stadium10-Dec-2014
Scorecard1:45

Agarkar: One of the biggest shocks for Mumbai

It would have made perfect sense had the Jammu & Kashmir players charged from the sidelines once Obaid Haroon called Hardeep Singh for the winning single. Or if they had danced in the middle like a team that had just won a World Cup. Or if loud shrieks of joy had burst in the dressing room as the team assembled for a meeting. All would have been appropriate and fitting for the scale of their achievement, for Mumbai had only lost five Ranji matches at the Wankhede in the last 15 years, all of them to major teams.Instead, the J&K group just got up on the feet, shook each other’s hands, embraced, and made a slow approach towards the pitch, as Hardeep took his light blue helmet off after completing the run and raised his bat towards them. They had been sitting by the boundary for a while, anxiously waiting and gorging on bananas, cheering every single without being overtly boisterous. Samiullah Beigh was padded up. He was there too, not inside the dressing room. Still, the muted reaction was quite a contradiction after they had brought a legendary team down on its turf. The only time it looked like the players were excited was when the news filtered that Sachin Tendulkar was in the Mumbai dressing room and the J&K players, most of whom were in Mumbai for the first time ever, could get a chance to meet him in person. Most of them ran back to the dressing room, waiting for Tendulkar to emerge and greet them. However, they were left a tad disappointed as Tendulkar left after a brief meet-up with their coach, Sunil Joshi, and their media manager. It was a minor low on a day of highs though and this team is pretty good in handling lows.Parvez Rasool on…

How their preparation was affected by floods…
“We lost a month of practice because of floods. The guys prepared themselves mentally after that and made do with practice wherever possible. The guys from Jammu played in Jammu. The guys from Srinagar also moved elsewhere. It’s good that even after such adversity, we were able to perform well. We also had a 15-day camp in Nagpur and that helped us all. Our coach’s hardwork and experience had an impact on the boys too.”
Losing out on home advantage…
“Every team gets home advantage. Last year we won three out of four of our home matches. This year we don’t have a home game, but we will have to manage with whatever we have with us.”
Beating Mumbai in Mumbai…
“We did so well here without much preparation, it’s a big thing for us. One thing this proves is that our players have a lot of potential. If they get good facilities and infrastructure, they can grow further.”

In the build-up to the season, the region was ravaged by devastating floods. When other teams were getting their pre-season preparations sorted, a J&K player was attending a funeral of a friend; when players around the country were spending time in gymnasiums, some J&K players were busy clearing up the mess the floods had left behind; when teams would have been planning of their home-match strategies, the J&K players had no clue where their home venue would be. As the water receded, J&K, among the big boys for the first time, realised they didn’t have a home advantage to exploit this year. All their games were to be away matches, against Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Bengal and others. It’s one way to travel around the country, but not the one they would have chosen for sure.Playing their first match at the Wankhede would have been nerve-wracking, but the team had taken some confidence from the win against a star-studded Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier this season. Their players, including their impressive seamers, had also been part of the zonal teams this year. The team’s confidence was also boosted, according to one J&K player, as they saw the grass being shaved off from the pitch once the locals had seen their seam attack. That seam-bowling group did go on to make an impression, picking up 14 wickets on what Parvez Rasool thought was a “dead” pitch.Although J&K suffered a collapse in the first innings, a maiden century from Shubham Khajuria, an India Under-19, had ensured they had the lead – a lead in Mumbai. Beat that for a confidence-booster. So when they came out on the fourth morning with nine wickets in hand, 179 adrift of a historical win, they knew they had the wares to go all the way. An early wicket was lost, a 52-run partnership followed. Another wicket, then another partnership.Shardul Thakur tested Khajuria and Rasool with a bounce barrage, with his aggressive stares, with his frequent conversations, but then he sprayed it wide down the leg side for four and it signalled a change of momentum. Next over, the 46th, Khajuria whipped two superbly-timed boundaries, against the turn of Vishal Dabholkar, through midwicket. Then Rasool reverse-swept in the same over to pick up four more. But J&K have seen things are never that simple. They had lost five wickets for one run in the first innings; today they lost both set batsmen at the same score. Khajuria chipped one back to Iqbal Abdulla and Rasool was bowled round his legs by Dabholkar.Waseem Raza joined Hardeep ahead of Haroon and Beigh, a surprise move that seemed to have added hesitation among the batsmen rather than trouble the opposition. Twice, the two batsmen argued after completing ill-advised singles. There was hesitation a third time too, but Raza, going for a second, was well short of a throw from third man. However, the two had added a vital 44.There is nothing that gives as much relief to the batting team, and annoys the bowlers at the same time, as an outside edge. Hardeep got one through the vacant first slip off Thakur. Once that gap was plugged, Haroon got another through second slip off the same bowler. Those two edges had a finality to them; there were no more jitters and J&K strolled through, Hardeep playing a dogged hand of 41*.”Hardeep is a senior player. He won a game last year as well, against Goa,” Rasool said after the win. “We were expecting him to draw from his experience and deliver for us. Shubham [Khajuria] played a tremendous innings. He has played India Under-19 and scored 160-odd at that level. We brought him from that level because we needed someone at the top. He has had a good impact since his arrival.”Beating Mumbai in Mumbai is a big thing. But our graph has been going up for the last three years. People said that we will know the difference between Plate and Elite leagues this time, but this win will serve as an answer to them, and proves that we can play at this level.”There was that same calmness in Rasool’s voice that had been in his team’s body language at the win. It was an indication that J&K had not lost the perspective that this still was going to be a tough tournament for them. It was also a sign that they were not overawed by the gigantic steel and concrete structure that can, at times, be suffocating for visiting teams. But perhaps for a team hardened by tough experiences within and beyond the cricket field, a win against Mumbai in Mumbai was not an emotional big deal. It was just a matter of fact.

National Bank, SNGPL open with wins

National Bank, having been inserted, rode on a 115-run stand between Aslam and Akmal to make 288. Aslam slammed seven fours and a six during his 65-ball 76, while Akmal’s 84 featured eight fours and two sixes. Alam then smashed 57 off 55 balls to leave the team poised for a strong total, but a late collapse meant that National Bank lost their last six wickets for just 18 runs. Munir Ansari was the pick of Rams’ bowlers, collecting 4 for 57.Rams never really got going in the chase as their progress was hampered by wickets at regular intervals. Usman Saeed top-scored with an unbeaten 51 and Talha Qureshi chipped in with 42, but the team failed to produce a meaningful partnership and were duly bundled out for 159 in 44 overs. Zia-ul-Haq took 3 for 29, while Raza Hasan, Mohammad Nawaz and Alam snared two scalps apiece.Imran Butt’s 98 ensured Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited chased down 235 with two overs and four wickets to spare against Karachi Dolphins at the National Stadium. SNGPL were struggling at 64 for 4 in their chase before Butt steadied the innings by playing the lead role in a 59-run stand for the fifth wicket.
