BCCI questions lack of video for Anderson case

Indian officials have questioned why crucial video footage that could have shed light on the alleged altercation between James Anderson and Ravi Jadeja is not available

George Dobell19-Jul-2014Indian officials have questioned why crucial video footage that could have shed light on the alleged altercation between James Anderson and Ravindra Jadeja is not available. The Indian team allege that Anderson initiated physical contact with Jadeja during the lunch break on the second day of the first Investec Test at Trent Bridge.Anderson will attend a preliminary hearing in London on Tuesday morning, after he was charged with a Level 3 offence under the ICC’s code of conduct. If the charge is upheld, Anderson could be suspended for anything up to four Tests. The hearing will be held over teleconference with Australian Gordon Lewis presiding. While players from both teams are set to provide conflicting evidence, India have requested that footage from a video camera situated just outside the dressing rooms where the incident occurred be made available.A Nottinghamshire spokesman confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that a camera had been installed in the relevant area but insisted that it had not been active at the time.India have reacted with incredulity to the response that the camera was not switched on at the time. They have also expressed some disappointment that none of the broadcasters appear to have footage of the alleged incident. But the ECB and Nottinghamshire deny any suggestion that any evidence has been suppressed. Instead, they say that the camera was installed only a few weeks ago in order to provide visitors to the club’s website with some insight to life inside the pavilion during major games. It is not currently online and the ECB insists it never has been. The development is the latest in an episode that has done nothing to improve relations between the teams. While India captain MS Dhoni has said Anderson “crossed the line” during the alleged altercation, England captain Alastair Cook has said India are using the incident as “a tactic” to sideline England’s leading bowler and have made “a mountain out of a molehill” by escalating it to a Level 3 offence.England also hit back by making a complaint about Jadeja leading to the ICC levelling a Level 2 charge. But a BCCI official confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that their complaint was the result of building frustration at Anderson’s behaviour. The official stated that India felt they had a responsibility to bring a case against the player as he had, in their words, earned a reputation with opposition teams around the world as being unusually abusive. They were also unhappy that Paul Downton, the managing director of England cricket, intervened to try to persuade India coach, Duncan Fletcher, to have the charge withdrawn. However, the ECB has indicated that Fletcher was initially open to a more amicable solution and it was Dhoni who wanted to take the matter further.Certainly there seems little chance that the issue can be resolved with a handshake. While the ICC chief executive Dave Richardson confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the complaints could be withdrawn, the India camp is adamant that Anderson’s behaviour is a boil that needs lancing and there appears to be very little common ground between the opposing sides.

Tough tour an opportunity for players – Rajput

Lalchand Rajput, the India A coach, believes the side’s “tough” upcoming tour of South Africa is an opportunity for fringe players to impress the national selectors for berths in the senior team

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Jul-2013Lalchand Rajput, the India A coach, believes the side’s “tough” upcoming tour of South Africa is an opportunity for fringe players to impress the national selectors for berths in the senior team. Rajput gave the example of the squad’s captain Cheteshwar Pujara, whose fine performance on the A team’s trip to West Indies last year helped him make a comeback to the India Test side, which is scheduled to tour South Africa in November.”The tour to South Africa is a tough one,” Rajput told . “Everyone knows that Australia or South Africa is a tough tour. The A tour is an opportunity for players who are in and out of the team because if you perform well in it then you get selected for the India team. This tour is important.”Cheteshwar Pujara went last year to the West Indies where he did well and immediately came into the India team. When we went to New Zealand, Bhuvneshwar Kumar did well, Mohammed Shami and (Ambati) Rayudu also did well on that tour and now they are in the India team.”Rajput said the tour would be another step in Pujara’s development as a leader. “I have seen Cheteshwar captaining the A team in the West Indies. He is a fantastic player. As a captain, he is learning by experience. I think this tour will help him mature as a captain.”Ten of the squad’s 16 players are currently part of the senior India side touring Zimbabwe for an ODI series. Rajput said the other six currently in India will have a short camp in Bangalore starting Thursday before leaving for South Africa on August 3. “Ten players are already playing in Zimbabwe, so they must be match-fit and would be coming directly from there to South Africa. So that should also help us. I am going to meet the other six players in Bangalore tomorrow.”The tour kicks off with a triangular one-day series also involving Australia A followed by two unofficial Tests against the hosts. India A play their first one-dayer, against Australia A, on August 8. “Triangular series is important because of two big teams Australia and South Africa,” Rajput said. “That will be a big challenge. After that we have two ‘Tests’. So we will focus on one series at a time.”

Though cricket is one of the most popular sports in Afghanistan, they have been forced to train outside their country due to a lack of cricketing infrastructure and have been using Sharjah Cricket Stadium as their home ground since 2010.With the costs of training in Sharjah proving expensive, Afghanistan turned to Pakistan for cricketing help. They have been using NCA facilities for cricket development and preparation since last month and the series of matches is the part of their training programme.Apart from the NCA facilities, Afghanistan get an opportunity to compete with some of the best players in Pakistan in the limited-overs series. August deadline for deciding on World T20 venues

Dissatisfied with the pace of construction work at Cox’s Bazaar and Sylhet, two of the four venues scheduled to host matches during the 2014 World Twenty20, the ICC has issued Bangladesh an alert

Nagraj Gollapudi29-Jun-2013The ICC has given Bangladesh an August deadline to achieve satisfactory standards for its stadiums for next year’s World Twenty20 tournament.Having reviewed the reports by its venue consultant who visited the stadiums in June, the ICC’s International Development (IDI) board has pencilled in another inspection for August following which a final decision will be taken on the venues for the tournament that will be played between March 16 and April 6 next year. The BCB’s president Nazmul Hassan admitted his concern ahead of the ICC annual conference in London that the ICC might lose patience over development at two of the four proposed venues, in Sylhet and Cox’s Bazar. Those concerns have now been expressed by the ICC. “The IDI board reviewed an inspection report by the ICC venue consultant … and expressed its concern regarding the progress of construction and improvements to playing facilities in Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet,” an ICC statement said. “The board noted that a further inspection and report is scheduled for August after which a final decision will be taken.”According to the ICC rules, the venues need to be ready six months ahead of the tournament, including adequately meeting the accommodation requirements for the teams. After two visits this year, the ICC venue inspection team found construction work at both Sylhet and Cox’s Bazar, which is scheduled to host the women’s leg of the World T20, was well behind schedule for different reasons. Also, it was worried by a lack of lodging options in Dhaka. After the first inspection, which took place in May, the ICC team found construction work at Cox’s Bazaar had not begun at all, while work on the pavilion in Sylhet – at the ground which was developed last year – had not started either. In the report the inspectors noted that the stadiums would not be ready before December; the six-month cut off as specified in the rules would be September. The team then returned to do a follow-up inspection on June 10, and the doubts over whether the work would reach its completion at both venues before end of September remained. However, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has stated that it remains confident that all the ICC deadlines will be met.”There is absolutely no doubt the work would be completed in due time,” Hassan said. “The government had started work late in Sylhet stadium but now it is in full swing. I have seen the work plan and I am convinced that it would be finished,” he said. “As for Cox’s Bazar, the major issue was the land. Now that we have land we are confident we will meet all the requirements.”Should alternative venues be required, Hassan assured the board members that Bangladesh has enough and there was no need to look outside the country. He listed Fatullah and BKSP (Bangladesh Sports Institute) in Savar, a northwest suburb of Dhaka, as alternatives in case Sylhet and Cox’s Bazar failed to meet the requirements once again in August.”We already have two other venues. For Sylhet we have Fatullah, a full-fledged and world-class stadium which has hosted international matches already. As for Cox’s Bazar, we can host the women’s matches in BKSP where we have prepared two grounds according to ICC guidelines.”ESPNcricinfo learned last week that Sri Lanka and South Africa were open to hosting the tournament if required. However Mustafa Kamal, the ICC vice-president and former BCB president, said the ICC board had not discussed any such plans as yet. He echoed Hassan’s confidence in relation to Bangladesh meeting the hosting requirements:”We have just delivered 2011 World Cup successfully. This is not a bigger event compared to that. We had prepared five grounds for the World Cup. We also had the 2014 World Twenty20. In 2016 we have the Under-19 World Cup followed by the World Cup Qualifiers in 2018. We are going to host so many events because we have the infrastructure.”The doubts over lack of accommodation for all teams in Dhaka came after the Bangladesh government voiced a plan to break down the Sheraton hotel in the capital and rebuild it. But Hassan said the government had now assured the BCB that it would put off the reconstruction till the World T20 was over.”We have the Sheraton, which was supposed to be renovated. The prime minister has assured us that the hotel would be available during the tournament, so we have an additional 200 rooms,” Hassan said. “That solves the lodging problem.”

Indians prepare for another gentle workout

Rahul Dravid’s presence in Derby on the eve of the warm-up game against Derbyshire is unlikely to make the game any more intense

Sidharth Monga in Derby30-Jun-2014Just a week ago, Rahul Dravid was a former India captain and a cricket pundit. He was speaking about the need for intense and competitive warm-up games. Although Dravid mentioned only the recent trend of counties putting up their 2nd XIs, it has not helped that India insist on using their whole squad as opposed to picking an XI, robbing these matches of their first-class status. A week later, Dravid is now part of the support staff, a batting consultant in the lead-up to the first Test, which begins in Nottingham on July 9.Dravid’s presence in Derby on the eve of the warm-up game against Derbyshire is unlikely to make the game any more intense. India will play all their 18 players, with only 11 batting and 11 on the field at any given time, and the game is against Derbyshire, who might not need to play a second team to bring the intensity down: they are a place from the bottom of the second division, lost three players last week, and were pummeled by Durham in a Twenty20 on Sunday.Yet there is an incentive for India to get their intensity up. In their previous tour game, against Leicestershire, who are placed bottom of Division Two, their bowlers conceded 349 for 5 in 62 overs. Two of the five wickets were “retired out”. Ishant Sharma and Pankaj Singh were the only two to get wickets. Even as the pressure grows on England after their defeat to Sri Lanka, the focus in the visitors’ camp is squarely on their bowlers. With these quick bowlers, much maligned and missing their bowling captain Zaheer Khan, the intensity was high during India’s only training session between the two tour games, on Monday. The lot of them reported at the ground an hour before the rest of the team, along with Duncan Fletcher-led support staff, Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara. There were no batsmen to bowl to, but the purpose of coming early was to put them through an endurance test. All of them had to do five laps of the ground, without stopping to catch a breath or walking in between before picking up again. Times were kept, charts prepared for Fletcher to examine properly. Almost all of the bowlers seemed winded by the effort. There was no respite, though: after a break for lunch and a team meeting, they went through a full bowling session at the nets.Mohammed Shami, though, was not part of the endurance test as he worked separately with physio Evan Speechly and strength and conditioning coach Sudarshan VP. His workout was not nearly as intense as the others’, he didn’t bowl much, but there were no injury concerns to report. Shikhar Dhawan, who had taken a blow and retired hurt in Leicester, was back fit too. After this game, India move to Nottingham for their preferred mode of preparation, four days of intense training sessions, before the series begins.

Viljoen stars in Namibia 91-run win

A round-up of all the World Cup 2015 qualifiers on January 15, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Jan-2014Christi Viljoen’s all-round heroics helped Namibia to a crushing 91-run win over Netherlands in Mount Maunganui. Batting first, Namibia’s openers added 35 in 6.2 overs before both departed in quick succession. Sarel Burger, the captain, and Craig Williams built on their good work by adding 57 runs for the third wicket. Although Netherlands struck twice in three overs, Namibia were well in control as Gerrie Snyman (74) and Viljoen (46*) compiled an 85-run partnership to help take Namibia to 253 for 6. Mudassar Bukhari was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 40.The Netherlands chase began with Michael Swart and Wesley Barresi falling for low scores as Netherlands stumbled to 25 for 2. Peter Borren, the captain, and Stephan Myburgh added 40 before things came undone as Viljoen and Bernard Scholtz plucked three wickets in quick succession to leave Netherlands at a precarious 66 for 5. Michael Rippon hit a plucky 44 off 73 balls, but couldn’t keep the chase on course as Netherlands succumbed to a 91-run loss. Viljoen once again starred with figures of 4 for 33.UAE captain Khurram Khan put in a solid performance with bat and ball to ensure his side maintained their undefeated record in New Zealand as they recorded a comfortable 80-run win over Canada in Rangiora. UAE posted an imposing 286 for 6 after winning the toss and batting first in an innings highlighted by a 130-run second wicket partnership between Khurram (88) and Amjad Ali (91). Khurram – who also picked up a fine for disciplinary breaches during the game – was eventually run out with six overs remaining while Ali was bowled by Khurram Chohan, who finished with Canada’s best figures on the day taking 3 for 65, but the rest of the Canadian attack lacked penetration. In reply, Canada’s top order was wiped out inside of five overs to leave them struggling at 9 for 3 before captain Jimmy Hansra partnered with Raza-ur-Rehman to resuscitate the innings with an 89-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, UAE’s bowling unit managed to keep the run rate down and Khurram eventually broke the stand by dismissing Rehman at the start of the 30th over for 43. With the required run rate getting out of hand and victory unlikely, Canada focused on batting out all 50 overs. Hansra finished on 100 not out off 119 balls as Canada ended on 206 for 6. Khurram was named Man of the Match after finishing with 2 for 35 in nine overs to go along with his first innings half-century.

Glamorgan end season on a high

Glamorgan rounded off the County Championship season with a convincing eight-wicket win over Gloucestershire on the final day of their Division Two encounter at Cardiff.

27-Sep-2013Glamorgan 306 (Allenby 85, Cooke 50, Gidman 4-64) and 102 for 2 (Goodwin 50*) beat Gloucestershire 275 (Dent 84) and 132 (Allenby 4-16) by eight wickets
ScorecardMurray Goodwin’s unbeaten 50 guided the run chase to cap a successful first season with Glamorgan•Getty ImagesGlamorgan rounded off the County Championship season with a convincing eight-wicket win over Gloucestershire on the final day of their Division Two encounter at Cardiff. With only 102 required for victory, Murray Goodwin helped to guide Glamorgan home with an unbeaten 50 a day when 12 wickets fell. That was after Gloucestershire had been skittled for only 132 in their second innings.Jim Allenby claimed 4 for 16 to go with his 85 in the first innings as Glamorgan, who took 22 points to Gloucestershire’s five, registered their third fourth-day win of the campaign. After day three had been a complete washout, Glamorgan had resumed their first innings on 271 for 9 – four runs behind Gloucestershire. But last pair Michael Hogan and Dean Cosker ended up putting on 62 for the final wicket to leave Glamorgan 306 all out – a lead of 31.Any hopes of Gloucestershire saving the game, however, evaporated as they were bowled out in their second innings in 44.3 overs. The visitors managed to wipe out the arrears but then lost their first wicket with the score on 35 when Chris Dent edged Hogan.Gloucestershire accelerated to 73 for 1 but then came a dramatic pre-lunch collapse when they lost 4 for 5 in 13 balls, with Ruaidhri Smith and Allenby doing the damage. It started when Graham Wagg took a good catch at extra cover to dismiss Gareth Roderick from Allenby.Smith took two wickets in an over. He bowled Alex Gidman and then had Ian Cockbain caught behind. And in the next over Allenby trapped Will Gidman leg before. It left Gloucestershire reeling at 78 for 5 at lunch – just 47 runs ahead. After the interval, Cameron Herring was caught behind, and, while Hamish Marshall completed 1,000 runs for the season, he lost Benny Howell, who was bowled by Hogan. Allenby made further inroads when he had Smith caught behind as Gloucestershire lost their eighth wicket on 118.Wagg found Marshall’s edge with the busy Allenby holding onto the catch at slip to leave Gloucestershire on 122 for 9. Graeme McCarter was last man out, caught and bowled by Allenby shortly before tea.In reply, Glamorgan lost Gareth Rees to the second ball of the innings and then Ben Wright for 17 in the 11th over. But Goodwin, 50 from 106 balls, and Chris Cooke steered Glamorgan to the winning post with 11.3 overs to spare.

Madrid expected to sign MbappeWould be monumental transferClub warned to learn from 'mistakes'WHAT HAPPENED?

The Spanish giants are said to be closing in on a deal to land the French forward after he informed Paris Saint-Germain that he will leave when his contract expires at the end of the season. His signing could mark a new Galactico era for Madrid, recreating the time they signed Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham together. However, ex-Madrid star Ivan Helguera has warned they could end up failing to live up to their potential.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT HELGUERA SAID

Helguera said at a La Liga and DAZN event: "It could be, what happens is that you have to see the mistakes that were made , there were many figures and very good players… but nothing was won. In Madrid it is important to win every year. It is wonderful to have all those players, but you have to know how to balance with a good squad. For Mbappe to come to Real Madrid would be an impressive signing and upwards it would be difficult to beat."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe would be joining a a squad that already boasts the likes of Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni, as well as veteran stars Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Despite the quality at Carlo Ancelotti's disposal, the Santiago Bernabeu side failed to win La Liga or the Champions League last season.

Glamorgan work to do in push for record

Glamorgan’s push for what would be a record-breaking victory was held up by a combination of determined batting and rain on the third day of the Division Two match against Derbyshire at Chesterfield

ScorecardJacques Rudolph still hopes to catch a fifth successive win [file picture]•Gallo ImagesGlamorgan’s push for what would be a record-breaking victory was held up by a combination of determined batting and rain on the third day of the Division Two match against Derbyshire at Chesterfield. When the weather closed in with 23 overs still to bowl, Derbyshire were 37 without loss following-on, still 121 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat and with a lot of batting ahead of them to deny Glamorgan five consecutive championship victories for the first time in their history. The home side fell nine short of the follow-on target when they were bowled out for 252 with opener Billy Godleman the only batsmen to pass 50 while seamer Ruaidhri Smith returned career-best figures of three for 23 in 11 overs. The leaden skies at the start of play made conditions good for bowling and Derbyshire were soon in trouble as the ball swung for Graham Wagg and Michael Hogan.Derbyshire needed a substantial stand between Godleman and skipper Wayne Madsen but that was ended in the fourth over of the morning when Hogan found some late movement to have Madsen caught at third slip for 24.Godleman’s resistance ended when Wagg swung one back in and when Wes Durston was squared up in the former Derbyshire all-rounder’s next over, the home side had lost three wickets for seven runs in 17 balls.Shiv Thakor and Alex Hughes added 44 in 17 overs but David Lloyd had Hughes taken at second slip and Thakor should have gone on 17 in the next over from Craig Meschede but Hogan spilled a low chance at third slip.Smith accounted for Harvey Hosein and Tony Palladino and when Thakor skied a sweep at Andrew Salter, Tom Taylor tore into Hogan, pulling and driving him for three sixes before the Australian bowled him on the stroke of tea. With conditions unsettled and still favourable for bowling, Glamorgan immediately enforced the follow on but Godleman and Hamish Rutherford were largely untroubled in the 18 overs before bad light resulted in the sixth and final stoppage of the day.It was a frustrating end for Glamorgan, but skipper Jacques Rudolph said: “I thought the way we bowled in those last 17 overs we deserved one or two wickets. They played really well but I still think the game is wide open and if we start well in the morning we can put them under some real pressure.”Madsen said: “I think with the forecast being fair tomorrow we are going to have to bat most of the day which is possible. We batted for 80 odd overs in the first innings and we will probably have to bat for over 110 and get ahead so the realistic objective for us is to try and bat through the day.”
