Ranjan Baindoor, the former Mumbai cricketer, died on Monday after suffering a heart attack

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Apr-2016Ranjan Baindoor, the former Mumbai cricketer, died on Monday after suffering a heart attack. Baindoor was 66.Baindoor, who worked for Tata Steel until his retirement last year, was the chairman of the Mumbai Cricket Association’s Under-19 selection committee.Baindoor was a part of the Ranji Trophy-winning Mumbai team of 1983-84 under Sunil Gavaskar. He played 16 first-class matches in a decade-long career, in which he scored 316 runs at 19.75. India deny pulling up SuperSport

The Indian team management has denied a report that they had pulled up the host broadcaster during the Centurion ODI for showing a clip of Virat Kohli getting injured during the first ODI with a caption that said, “Kohli – softened up”

Sidharth Monga 13-Dec-2013The Indian team management has denied a report that they had pulled up the host broadcaster during the Centurion ODI for showing a clip of Virat Kohli getting injured during the first ODI with a caption that said, “Kohli – softened up”. A report in on Thursday said, “SuperSport’s director was summoned to the Indian changing room during the innings interval and an explanation [was] demanded. His argument for ‘editorial relevance’ was countered with angry accusations of ‘inappropriate behaviour’, disrespect, and a suggestion that he ‘sticks to the cricket’ in future.”An Indian team official said he was not aware of what had happened. An official communication 10 minutes later said, “Once rain stopped play we did meet the producer of SuperSport but it was for discussing something else and not about the clip shown of Virat.”A SuperSport representative confirmed that “discussions” had taken place without going into details. A spokesperson said, “SuperSport is aware that discussions took place between a member of its production staff and members of the Indian touring party at SuperSport Park on 11 December. SuperSport will continue to produce the matches during the current tour to world-class specifications and with regard to editorial context.”During the Wanderers ODI, Kohli was hit in the rib area by a Morne Morkel short ball. While he did not flinch or show pain on the field, he later applied an ice pack on the bruise. The clip being referred to in this incident showed the whole sequence: first his getting hit, then him with an ice pack, and then practising a pull. One of the TV commentators said the clip was shown on the request of the commentary team on air at the time because they were discussing facing fast bowling and coming back from getting hit.Members of the SuperSport commentary team said they had not been informed of any developments and were not given any instructions.

ScorecardGlamorgan’s County Championship Division Two clash with Yorkshire at Colwyn Bay was abandoned as a draw on Saturday with no play possible on any of the final three days.Umpires Mark Benson and Paul Baldwin called the game off at 9.15am with no prospect of play because of persistent rain which had left pools of water on the outfield. Yorkshire take four points from the contest to three for Glamorgan, who remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the table. There has been so much rain that Sunday’s Clydesdale Bank 40 game between Glamorgan and Durham at the ground must be in doubt unless there is a dramatic change in the weather.

Watson won't play before India squad chosen

Shane Watson will not play a match in his redefined role as a non-bowling batsman before the India Test touring squad is chosen

Daniel Brettig21-Jan-2013Australia’s selectors will have their trust in Shane Watson tested by the revelation he will not play a match in his redefined role as a non-bowling batsman before the India Test touring squad is chosen.Watson is in the latter stages of recovering from a calf strain that was aggravated during the Melbourne Test against Sri Lanka, and ESPNcricinfo understands that he is expected make his return to the game in a domestic limited-overs fixture for New South Wales on January 30.The national selector John Inverarity has said that the squad for India is due to be announced before the end of this month, meaning Watson’s inclusion in the touring party would have to be made on faith rather than form and fitness.Watson trained in front of Inverarity and Andy Bichel in Sydney on Sunday and batted in the nets on Monday, but he was ruled out of Australia’s Twenty20 matches against Sri Lanka and a Sheffield Shield match for the Blues against Western Australia, due to begin on Thursday.”He had a good running work-out. Andy Bichel and I were there when he did his running drills . . . but he didn’t bat,” Inverarity said. “When we left it yesterday it was uncertain, but he’ll certainly play before the end of this month.”This means that neither Watson nor the man he has effectively nominated to displace in the Test side, Ed Cowan, will play a first-class match before the announcement.NSW’s next Shield fixture is due to take place against Tasmania in Hobart from February 6-9.Inverarity said that his panel would not be swayed by Watson’s public airing of his preference to open the batting. “Not really, no. We’ll consider all players on their merits, in a dispassionate way,” Inverarity said.”The captain always determines the batting order. We’ve had many discussions with Shane. One of the basic points is he’s always willing to play and bat where he’s asked to bat.”Another player of interest to the selectors is Moises Henriques, who is likely to be slotted into the NSW Shield team to play against WA even if his Australian duties with the ODI team in Hobart on Wednesday means he makes a delayed entry to the match.

Cannot overlook Rohit's quality – Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir said the team will be sticking with Rohit Sharma as dropping a quality player like him would damage his confidence

Abhishek Purohit in Colombo27-Jul-2012The change of venues from windy Hambantota to humid Colombo may not change the fortunes of Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary. The team management expects much of Rohit in the 2015 World Cup and will back him “as much as possible”, according to opening batsman Gautam Gambhir. Tiwary is sure to get opportunities, but whether it comes in the next game or the next series, “no one knows,” Gambhir said. So basically, Rohit has the faith; Tiwary can keep the bench. What again came out in the press conference was how highly the team management rated Rohit. Gambhir said dropping a “talented” player like Rohit – who averages 17.33 this year – would only undermine his confidence. He might not be among the runs, but Rohit was batting “the best among all of us” in the nets, and asked for more faith as he saw him “scoring a lot of runs for India in the future.” Where is he going wrong at present, though? “Nowhere.””He’s done pretty well,” Gambhir said. “Not on this tour, not in Australia, but he’s got two Man-of-the-Series awards, in West Indies and in India. If you keep chopping and changing players like him who are so talented, you are only going to play with his confidence. He was unfortunate in the last game. You can drag the ball on [to the stumps]. It can happen to the best of players. But you have to see the bigger picture. If he is in your scheme of things for the next World Cup, obviously you have to go with him and try and give him as much confidence as possible.”Gambhir said it was a matter of time before Rohit got the runs. “Whether a person is in form or out of it, the important thing is how he is feeling about his batting. You cannot be batting well, but you can still be getting runs. If you are very comfortable with your batting, if you know that you are batting well, somewhere down the line you will score runs. We still need to show some faith in him because he is a quality player.”Getting dropped after a lean run may damage Rohit’s confidence, but Tiwary’s will sink lower when he makes a match-winning century, and is then left out for 13 straight games, and maybe more. All Gambhir said was that Tiwary should look to grab every chance he got.”It is not about individuals and I don’t want to talk about individuals, about how Manoj is feeling,” Gambhir said. “How the team is doing is all that matters. Somewhere down the line, he will get an opportunity. If he is not getting the opportunity and the team management [believes the] playing XI they pick is the best XI to do the job on that particular day, the team management does that because ultimately it is not about individuals. It is about what results you want and what combination you want to go with.”Whenever Manoj gets that opportunity, he should be looking forward to it and he should do well in that opportunity. Whether he gets it in the next game, whether he gets it in the next series, no one knows.”The third ODI on Saturday may make the fate of both the batsmen clearer.

At least three bids expected for new IPL franchise

For the second time in as many months, the BCCI’s mandarins will assemble on Thursday in an attempt to find a new franchise owner for the IPL

Amol Karhadkar24-Oct-2012For the second time in as many months, the BCCI’s mandarins will assemble in an attempt to find a new franchise owner for the IPL on Thursday. Their last attempt was foiled when the owners of Deccan Chargers rejected the sole bid by PVP Ventures to take over the then beleaguered (and now terminated) Hyderabad franchise on September 13, and the BCCI would be hoping Thursday does not see a repeat.Despite several litigation issues that have dogged the league over the last year and the departure of its title sponsor, it is unlikely the new invitation to tender – floated by the board on October 14 after India’s Supreme Court upheld Chargers’ termination – will pass without any serious bidders. When the BCCI top brass meet in Mumbai on Thursday, they would be hoping to have “at least three” bidders for the new IPL team that would feature in at least five editions of the tournament from the 2013 season. “Around half a dozen tender documents have been bought by prospective owners, so it cannot be said that the response has been negative,” a BCCI insider told ESPNcricinfo. It is important to note that a lower base price has been set for the new team, a factor that is expected to draw more interest from bidders. When the Sahara group bought the Pune franchise in 2010, the base price was $225m (about Rs 1035 crore by 2010 rates) for 10 years (about Rs 103 crore per year). It was learnt that this time, the BCCI has set the base price at Rs 60 crore ($11.2 million) per year for a period of five years.Though the BCCI bigwigs were tightlipped over the expected winning bid amount, a market expert, requesting anonymity, said he “won’t be surprised if the winning bid is around Rs 600 crore ($112 million) for five years”.Recently, hours before the Chargers’ termination, a Mumbai-based realty firm, the Kamla Landmarc group had offered to buy Chargers for Rs 1250 crore ($231.5 million) payable over ten years, the amount being confirmed by Ajay Vazirani, senior partner of Hariani & Co, legal advisors to the Landmarc group.”If the base price is lowered, then it will certainly become an investor-friendly entity,” said Prahlad Kakkar, a leading ad filmmaker in Mumbai. “What has been happening till now is the cost of the team is so high that the only option to make money is to sell the team. A lowered base price suddenly makes it more viable for a lot of investors.”The BCCI tender had invited bids with respect to 12 cities: Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Indore, Kanpur, Kochi, Nagpur, Noida, Rajkot, Ranchi and Vizag. Among those who will most likely submit their bids are PVP Ventures, whose efforts to buy Chargers last month went in vain. It is also possible that the Ahmedabad-based Adani group, with interests in shipping, mining and agriculture, and Noida-based Jaypee group, who are infrastructure specialists and currently own the Indian F1 track, could end up bidding for their home cities. The BCCI has imposed stringent measures when it comes to the termination clause by adding a performance deposit, which the owners of the team forfeit should they fail to pay their bank guarantee. On Thursday, the IPL governing council will also discuss several issues around IPL 2013, including, it is believed, the fate of the Chargers players. The governing council could decide to send all those players back into the auction pool.

Parthiv, Gohel fifties propel Gujarat

A round-up of the second day’s play of Group A’s fifth round matches from the Ranji Trophy

ScorecardFile photo: Parthiv Patel hit eight fours during his unbeaten 75•ESPNcricinfoOpener Samit Gohel and Parthiv Patel ‘s half-centuries stabilised Gujarat who were closing in on Jharkhand’s first-innings total of 289 at the end of day two in Jamshedpur.Gujarat lost Priyank Panchal in the sixth over, caught off Shahbaz Nadeem, before Bhargav Merai was run-out in the 10th, leaving them at a precarious 23 for 2. However, the visitors recovered as Goel and Parthiv batted out the remaining 47.1 overs, to finish strongly at 168 for 2, heading into the third day. Gohel, who struck an unbeaten 102 in the previous game against Punjab, hit 10 fours during his 66 while Parthiv’s 75, which included eight fours, meant he has scored a fifty in all but one of his five Ranji games this season.Jharkhand began the day at 194 for 5, but were dealt an early blow when Kumar Deobrat was dismissed for 5. They rallied with a 42-run seventh-wicket partnership between Saurabh Tiwary and Nadeem. Both were dismissed within five overs of each other and though the tail did wag slightly, Jasprit Bumrah picked up a five-wicket haul for the second match running, to bundle them out for 289.
ScorecardManish Pandey’s 11th first-class century helped Karnataka to a first-innings lead and take control of their match againt Odisha in Cuttack.Pandey came in with Karnataka at 72 for 2 and nursing the loss of their openers. However, he batted out the remaining 70 overs of the day to ensure Karnataka finished strongly at 288 for 4, 62 runs more than Jharkhand’s first-innings score of 226.Pandey struck 13 fours and two sixes during his unbeaten 108, and added 114 for the third wicket with KL Rahul, who made 67. Rahul was caught behind by Subhrajit Sahoo off Biplab Samantray in the 57th over, but another solid partnership followed for the visitors- a fourth-wicket stand of 71 between Pandey and Kunal Kapoor- that took them beyond 250.The Jharkhand bowlers endured a frustrating day on the field, with Samantray, Deepak Behera and Basant Mohanty managing one wicket each.
ScorecardMumbai taught Vidarbha lesson or two at the Wankhede, taking firm control at the halfway stage of their Ranji Trophy Group A match. At stumps on day two, after bundling out Vidarbha for 113 for a first-innings lead of 148, Aditya Tare and Ajinkya Rahane’s unbroken century stand for the second wicket helped Mumbai get to 179 for 1.With Tare and Rahane at their sublime best, any of Vidarbha’s hopes of stretching Mumbai in their first-ever Ranji clash evaporated. Ending the day trailing by 327 runs, Vidarbha seem to be headed for a huge defeat, and Mumbai, their third victory in four games this season.Read the full report here.
ScorecardOn a green track at Lahli, the match between hosts Haryana and Punjab seems set for a close finish. At the end of the second day, Haryana have a 96-run lead but are also five wickets down and the Punjab pacers, particularly, Sandeep Sharma and VRV Singh will be looking to knock the side over quickly on the third morningRead the full report here.

BCB 'not to involve' Ashraful in any form of cricket

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided ‘not to involve’ Mohammad Ashraful in any form of cricket until the ICC’s ACSU submits its report on investigations into suspected match-fixing and spot-fixing in this year’s BPL

Mohammad Isam04-Jun-2013The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided ‘not to involve’ former captain Mohammad Ashraful in any form of cricket until the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) submits its report on investigations into alleged match-fixing and spot-fixing in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The decision was taken at a BCB meeting on Tuesday after Ashraful admitted to his involvement in the activities.”[Mohammad] Ashraful has admitted to his guilt, so I feel he has no chance of staying with the game in the near future,” Nazmul Hassan, BCB president, said after the board’s executive committee meeting. “Ashraful himself told me about his confession. What he has confessed to, I don’t know because I want to read the full report first.”Later, a BCB statement confirmed that Ashraful would be kept out of the game: “The board decided not to involve Mohammad Ashraful in any cricketing activity under BCB’s jurisdiction until further notice. This decision was based on the player’s own confession of involvement in corrupt activities.”After Bangladesh’s admission into international cricket in 2000, Ashraful was its first recognised face and sometimes its only flag-bearer since his debut in 2001. His admission of guilt has had a major impact in the image of Bangladesh cricket, especially at a time when the cricket team has been faring quite well.Hassan said he will deal with the latest controversy in the right way, and take stringent action against those involved in corruption. He has also said that the ACSU report would be made public to clear any doubts about the BCB’s intent to tackle allegations of match-fixing and spot-fixing.”I am not going to let anyone off the hook. Everything has to be in a system, within rules. There will be hundreds of problems, but if we go about it the right way and solve them one by one, it will help us,” Hassan said. “We will make public whatever report we get from the ICC ACSU. They offered me bits and pieces of information on Sunday, when I met them. I said I want full details, and I can wait for it.”The BCB chief also explained how the ACSU, which was hired by the board to keep an eye on corrupt practices, went about their investigation during the BPL.”The day after BPL ended, they gave me a list of names [of people] who were suspected to have been involved in illegal activities. I immediately agreed to know the full details. This is the background of how all this started,” Hassan said. “They have taken interviews of a lot of people around the world. They have come to the end of their investigation, except for one last interview. It was supposed to have been taken yesterday, somewhere abroad. They told me that after that last interview, it would take them five to six days to submit the final report.”According to BCB’s anti-corruption laws, a 10-member tribunal is supposed to be formed to decide on the judgment of such cases. But Hassan is inclined to take the decision himself, since the investigation has been conducted by the ICC ACSU, on behalf of the BCB.”Since we couldn’t do the investigation ourselves, I think our decision, too, should be based on ACSU’s report on the matter,” Hassan said. “Whether we need a tribunal or not, we can consult BCB’s and ICC’s legal unit. But I think as a board president, I can take a decision and punish the guilty based on the ACSU report.”One of Bangladesh’s most experienced cricketers, Ashraful played 61 Tests and captained the national side in 13 Test matches, 38 ODIs and 11 T20Is between 2007 and 2009. During a career which extended from 2001 to 2013, he scored 2,737 runs in Test matches at an average of 24. He has also played 177 ODIs and scored 3,468 runs at an average of 22.23.

England fly out for history quest

England fly out to Australia on Wednesday evening to begin their attempt at securing a fourth straight Ashes series victory, something they haven’t achieved since the 19th century

Return to Oz

England fly out to Australia on Wednesday evening to begin their attempt at securing a fourth straight Ashes series victory, something they haven’t achieved since the 19th century.A squad of 17 – which won’t be far off being doubled when the backroom staff are taken into account – is led by Alastair Cook and will depart for Perth where they will begin preparations for the Test series that starts on November 21 at the Gabba.Tim Bresnan, who was diagnosed with a stress fracture of the back after the Durham Test where England clinched the series, will also leave with the squad but is not an official member yet and his recovery will be monitored during the early weeks of the tour. There are three uncapped players in the party – Gary Ballance, Ben Stokes and Boyd Rankin – while Michael Carberry has just a single Test to his name.Ballance, the Yorkshire left hander, and Durham allrounder Stokes are two of the players vying for the troublesome No. 6 spot, alongside Jonny Bairstow who was in possession of the position until The Oval Test, and deciding who fills that role will be one of the key decisions to reach during the lead-in period before Brisbane. The first warm-up match, against a Western Australia XI, begins on October 31 after a period of acclimatisation. England’s proficient use of the tour matches on the 2010-11 tour, where they won two and dominated a draw in the other, was highlighted as a key factor in their success on that trip even though they began slowly in Brisbane, being bowled out for 260 on the opening day.England’s recent record in opening Tests away from home is poor: they have not won the first encounter since beating South Africa, at Port Elizabeth, in 2004.There are concerns this time about the strength of the opposition England will encounter in the early weeks of the tour. The matches against Western Australia, Australia A and New South Wales all clash with rounds of the Sheffield Shield. The sides fielded by WA and NSW are likely to be particularly under strength and it has been suggested that reinforcements will be called in. Ultimately for England, though, the importance will be getting miles in the bowlers’ legs and hours at the crease for the batsmen.Tim Bresnan flies out with the official squad to continue his recovery from injury•Getty ImagesThree years ago, Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss fielded the first Test starting XI in the first two warm-up matches before resting the four frontline bowlers – James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Steven Finn and Graeme Swann – for the match against Australia A in Hobart.Anderson, Broad and Swann are, fitness permitting, certainties again but Finn will have to fight to regain the place he lost after the opening Test at Trent Bridge in July. On that occasion his berth went to Bresnan, who provided greater control and added depth to lower order. This time, unless Bresnan’s recovery is unexpectedly rapid, his competition will come from Rankin, who impressed during the one-day series against Australia last month, and the recalled Chris Tremlett who had a major impact on the 2010-11 series when he was brought in for the Perth Test onwards.Tremlett, who played his previous Test against Pakistan in January 2012, was expected to start on his homeground at The Oval in August but, at the last minute, was overlooked as England changed the balance of their side by handing debuts to Chris Woakes and Simon Kerrigan. The experiment was not a success and neither have made this tour: Woakes was solid, but has been leapfrogged by Stokes, and Kerrigan suffered a nightmare debut as he was mauled by Shane Watson. Despite Stokes’ presence in the squad, the odds favour England returning to their preferred balance of six batsmen, the wicketkeeper, three fast bowlers and Swann.
