Crystal Palace are making contingency plans behind the scenes, in the event they’re forced to sell Eberechi Eze amid ongoing interest from Arsenal.
Crystal Palace jostling to sign "special" £30m Chelsea ace over AC Milan
The Eagles could land a Chilwell repeat…

Oliver Glasner hasn’t exactly enjoyed the best summer window after guiding Palace to their first ever major trophy at the end of last season.
The south Londoners are currently in a legal battle with UEFA, Nottingham Forest and Lyon after Palace’s spot in the Europa League was unceremoniously, and perhaps unfairly, revoked due to their alleged breach of multi-club ownership rules.

John Textor was forced to sell his shares in Palace, agreeing a £190 million deal for his 43% stake with New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, with the American tycoon also resigning from his leadership role at Lyon to try and avoid a demotion to the Conference League.
However, UEFA still followed through with their decision, and Palace have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in a bid to get their Europa League spot back.
A decision is expected on August 11 after a hearing three days prior, and whilst the Eagles take on UEFA, Glasner’s side also face the looming threat of losing key players.
Marc Guehi is attracting serious interest from Liverpool and other Premier League rivals ahead of deadline day on September 1, while multiple sources suggest that Arsenal are hot on the heels of star playmaker Eze.
The England international had a £60 million release clause in his contract, but that expired at 11:59pm on Friday night, so Arsenal will need to enter negotiations with Palace if they want to strike a deal.
Arsenal were not planning to trigger Eze’s clause anyway, and the 27-year-old remains very keen on a move across London after talks with both Mikel Arteta and Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta, according to reports.
Crystal Palace could sign Lucas Paqueta and Leandro Trossard to replace Eze
Football Transfers have an update on the ex-QPR star’s future, and it’s claimed that Steve Parish could make a “sensational double swoop” to replace Eze if he does leave.
Crystal Palace's EberechiEzeposes with the player of the match trophy
Indeed, West Ham creator Lucas Paqueta and Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard are of interest to Glasner’s side, and FT sources believe that Palace could bring in the two London stars simultaneously if Eze leaves.
The Brazilian is apparently Palace’s “major target”, but they’re also weighing up a move for Trossard, who could be used as a makeweight by Arsenal to sweeten any deal for Eze.
Lucas Paqueta
In a statement move, Palace may actually end up signing both Paqueta and Trossard, but for that to happen, Parish could need to milk as much cash for Eze as possible.
The Hammers midfielder commands a price tag of around £60 million, according to GiveMeSport, while Arsenal have placed a £17 million valuation on Trossard as he enters the final 11 months of his contract.
The £77 million duo are proven Premier League players, though, and could be worth their wait in gold for Glasner, who’s looking to build upon Palace’s historic FA Cup triumph at Wembley.
“I’m sure we’ll come up with a plan and find a way to take 20 wickets and hopefully score a few runs as well”

Mitchell backs NZ to adapt on the fly
Pune is preparing to roll out a bald, low-bounce black-soil pitch to negate New Zealand’s seamers, who had set up their first Test win in India in 36 years in Bengaluru, but the visitors aren’t too fussed about it, according to Daryl Mitchell. After New Zealand finished their first practice session by noon on Tuesday, the groundstaff cut some amount of grass off the pitch and it might be shaved bare on the eve of the second Test.”One thing we can’t do is we can’t change the surface,” Mitchell said two days out of the Pune Test. “So for us, it’s reacting to what’s coming at us and adapting on the fly. We as Kiwis, that’s what we pride ourselves on, we get stuck into the moment, we stay where our feet are and we be as present as possible. We can’t change the wicket. What will be, will be. But I’m sure we’ll come up with a plan and find a way to take 20 wickets and hopefully score a few runs as well.”While Mitchell is often proactive against spin – he is adept at stepping out and also sweeping and reverse-sweeping – he has been searching for some form. Since scoring a century against Sri Lanka at his home ground in Christchurch in March last year, Mitchell has managed only 406 runs in 16 innings at an average of 27.06, which is almost 20 points below his overall average of 46.08 in Test cricket. Mitchell, however, isn’t reading too much into it.Related

“Look, that’s the nature of the game that we play, especially Test cricket,” he said. “You know, you have little patches where you score a lot of runs and you have patches where I guess you get starts and you want to keep trying to convert. So, look, for me, I just love playing for New Zealand. It means a hell of a lot to pull on that baggy and play Test cricket. And I know that if I keep doing my job for the team, then personal milestones and things like that will take care of themselves.”With Kane Williamson unavailable for the second Test too, as he continues to recover from a groin strain, Will Young is set to keep his place at No.3. He forged an unbroken 75-run partnership with Rachin Ravindra in the fourth innings to settle New Zealand’s small chase of 107 after Jasprit Bumrah had taken out both Tom Latham and Devon Conway in another sensational burst. Mitchell’s Canterbury team-mate Will O’Rourke, who was playing his first Test in India, also made a serious impression by coming away with a match haul of seven wickets, including the first-innings scalp of Virat Kohli. Mitchell hailed their smooth transition from domestic to international cricket.Daryl Mitchell has managed only 406 runs in his last nine Tests•AFP/Getty Images
“Youngie and Rachin have been around our group for a long time even though they haven’t played a lot of cricket,” Mitchell said. “They’ve been able to see how the culture works and how we want to go about playing as Black Caps. And they’ve fitted seamlessly into their roles.”Will O’Rourke, he’s a young talent. He’s from my domestic team back home, so I’ve had to face him plenty of times in the nets and it’s not much fun. So look, he’s a great talent and I’m sure he’ll continue to do amazing thing for New Zealand in the future.”While O’Rourke’s 6’4″ frame – and high release point – has provided New Zealand’s attack a new cutting edge, he is also capable of locating a fuller length and moving the ball both ways at speeds north of 140kph. Mitchell, who has followed O’Rourke’s progress from close quarters, gave his take on why O’Rourke is an awkward bowler to face.”He’s a big unit first of all,” Mitchell said. “He’s tall, he bowls from a height but he also can get the balls to go both ways which is always a challenge especially in Christchurch at Hagley [Oval]. There’s a bit of bounce in those wickets, so as you can imagine it can be quite tough at times. “But yeah look, he’s first of all a great man as well. He doesn’t say a lot but when he does it’s pretty funny and yeah, he’s good to have around.”

Thomas Frank desperately needs backing in these final few weeks of the summer window, after watching Son Heung-min complete a £20 million move to LAFC and James Maddison be ruled out for most of next season.

Maddison will miss the majority of 2025/2026 following confirmation of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in his right knee – sustained during Tottenham’s pre-season friendly in Seoul against Newcastle United last Sunday.

The injury struck just minutes after he came on as a substitute, with the playmaker needing to be stretchered off. Maddison will now undergo surgery and rehabilitation, dealing an almighty blow to Frank’s chances of a winning start to his tenure.
The Dane described Maddison’s absence as “devastating,” lamenting the loss not just for the team, but for the player personally.
“I think it’s disappointing but also devastating for me and mainly for Madders that he’s out of the team,” said Frank, speaking after Thursday evening’s friendly defeat to Bayern. “We will miss him and no doubt he will miss playing football.”
His absence leaves a notable creative void, with Spurs already thin in that area. Frank’s side were already working to sign an attacking midfielder before Maddison’s return to the sidelines (Fabrizio Romano), but those plans must now intensify with Tottenham minus one of their chief forward outlets.
The Lilywhites had booked a medical for Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White last month (BBC), only for his club to block the £60 million move and tie him down with a brand-new contract – forcing Spurs back to square one in their search for a number 10.
A host of intriguing targets have been linked in the last few days alone, including Man City’s Jack Grealish, AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, Como starlet Nico Paz, Liverpool forward Harvey Elliott and Savinho.
All the aforementioned men can be used as playmakers when required, as can Barça forward Ferran Torres.

Frank could use Torres as a replacement for Son and Maddison, theoretically, but it appears Spurs are set to be snubbed in their attempts to sign the ex-City sensation.
According to reports in Spain, Tottenham made a £43 million bid for Torres recently. However, the cash-strapped Catalans have still decided not to sell, especially considering his new lease of life towards the second half of 2024/2025.

Torres scored 19 goals and bagged a further seven assists last season, and would’ve been a fantastic asset for Frank, but it appears the north Londoners will have to continue their search for attackers elsewhere.
“He’s a player on another level, he’s spectacular: how he understands the space, links play, doesn’t lose the ball, his defensive work… he’s world-class,” said ex-Barca boss, Xavi.
“He’s a great signing, one I wanted, and a wonderful footballer.”

The left-arm quick took a career-best haul to lead Australia to a tight victory over Pakistan which clinched the T20I series

Spencer Johnson has a formidable record at the SCG•Getty Images
Spencer Johnson is building some good memories of the SCG. For his second consecutive outing there he walked away as player of the match as a career-best 5 for 26 sealed the T20I series against Pakistan. They were the best figures by an Australia men’s quick in T20Is, moving above James Faulkner’s 5 for 27 also against Pakistan in Mohali in 2016, and it follows his title-winning performance in last season’s BBL final against Sydney Sixers where he claimed 4 for 26. Throw in 3 for 28 also against Sixers in early 2023, and he has 12 wickets at 6.66 in T20s at the ground.Related

Johnson five-for headlines nervy win as Australia take series
“That doesn’t really make any sense to be honest,” Johnson said of his figures on Saturday evening. “It’s nice to be back at the SCG. My last time here was the Big Bash final and the conditions were in the bowler’s favour.”Much like that BBL game, where he was struck for three boundaries off his four balls before turning things around, it wasn’t an ideal start in front of a crowd of 31,563 as his first ball went for five wides down the leg side and his third was taken first slip. But Johnson had confidence in himself, and in his second over removed Sahibzada Farhan. Then when he returned in the 10th over he put himself on a hat-trick with the wickets of Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha before making the decisive blow by removing Usman Khan for 52 when he was threatening to turn the game back Pakistan’s way.”I’ve played enough T20 cricket to know game to game you can have good games and bad games,” Johnson said. “A lot of time it’s through no fault of your own. You can mis-execute. But I knew tonight I had three overs to bounce back. I felt like the first over in that Big Bash final was a bit under pressure, and I was thinking back to that game and that I still had three overs to contribute to the team.”Johnson is among a group of Australian quick bowlers who fight for their opportunities in white-ball cricket when the big three of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are absent as they are for this series. With that trio having spoken of Test cricket being a priority, there could be a chance of some renewal in Australia’s first-choice T20 attack ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup following their Super Eight exit at this year’s tournament although Johnson is not expecting rapid change.”I know the big three will be here for a long time,” Johnson said. “They’re not going anywhere, they are only getting better. To be able to chop in and be part of the squad a lot more will only help me there. They are unbelievably durable and have done it for so long. They are definitely the benchmark.”Johnson, who missed the UK white-ball tour in September with a side strain, admitted that backing up game after game remained the challenge for him. He is expected to play the final T20I in Hobart on Monday which would make it four games in a row having also featured in the deciding ODI in Perth and has his sights set on a Sheffield Shield outing for South Australia before the BBL with Brisbane Heat.”The durability question mark is there for me, and, hopefully, the more I play the more durable I get.” he said. “I feel like the body’s getting there. It’s taken its time.”

An “impeccable” attacking player is now “keen” on sealing a move to Newcastle United this summer as their search for reinforcements up front continues.
Howe shares latest on Isak's Newcastle future
The future of Alexander Isak at St James’ Park continues to rumble on, with nothing significant changing in the past week or so and the Swede still training away from his teammates.
Eddie Howe has now responded to claims that Isak told him he wanted to leave Newcastle back in May, downplaying it and saying other things were on his mind at that point.
“Trust me, when that final whistle went, that (Isak leaving) was the furthest thing from my mind. It was just a feeling of relief really because we were hunting that prize all season. We were in and around it after a really good run in December. I was not thinking of any individual in that moment, so I can’t really give an answer on that.”
It remains to be seen what will happen with Isak in the coming weeks, but it is a needless distraction for Howe, who will know the importance of signing at least one top-quality striker if the 25-year-old does move on.
PSG star "keen" on Newcastle move
Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League scout Mick Brown claimed that Paris Saint-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos is “keen” on joining Newcastle before the summer window slams shut.
“He is keen to make that move to Newcastle. It’s always a dilemma in football, the better the team you’ve got at your disposal, the less likely it is for somebody to break into that team. He’s always on the outside looking in from the bench while the team is getting success.
Ramsey will love him: Newcastle in talks over next 24 hrs to sign £60m CF
Newcastle are ready to close the summer transfer window on a positive note.
ByAngus Sinclair Aug 19, 2025
“So from his point of view, the opportunity to go and play in the Premier League and Champions League with Newcastle will be inviting for him. Newcastle have been looking at a number of options across Europe. They’re probably further down that list than they would have hoped to be, but that’s what the scouts are paid for, they’ll know all about him.
“They’ve been watching him for PSG and they’ll know what he can and can’t do, where he would fit into the team and whether he suits their style. So if it all adds up and they see him as an option, maybe they’ll make a move. A lot will depend on Isak though, whether he moves on, but I think either way they want to get a striker in and he might be the one.”
Ramos would be an excellent signing for Newcastle this summer, considering he has proven himself at the highest level, scoring a hat-trick for Portugal at the 2022 World Cup.
Despite holding a €120m (£104m) release clause, the attacker is struggling to be a regular starter for European champions PSG, so the chance of being a key man at St James’ certainly looks appealing.

Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane has backed his team-mate Rohit Sharma to “get a big one” as the India Test captain returns to the Ranji Trophy after low returns in his last eight Tests this season. In the three Tests in Australia and five at home before that, Rohit managed only 164 runs from 15 innings to average a dismal 10.93.Rohit now returns to the domestic cricket – although likely for one round before the ODIs against England – along with many other India Test players such as Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and possibly Virat Kohli.”What is important is he is hungry, he is determined to do well,” Rahane said of Rohit on the eve of Mumbai’s next fixture starting on Thursday. “I am sure once he gets in, he will get a big one.Related

“He batted really well yesterday [in] a couple of [net] sessions, so it’s part and parcel of a player’s career. I am really confident about Rohit.”Rohit has always been relaxed. Even playing at the international level, his character is similar. His attitude is pretty much relaxed. He knows his game really well so, no one has to tell him what he needs to do.”Once he gets in, I’m sure he will do well. He has never changed, which is a very good thing.”After the coming round in which Mumbai host Jammu & Kashmir at home, Rohit will captain India against England in a three-match ODI series starting on February 6 followed by the Champions Trophy.”I think he’s only playing this game; not sure about the next game,” Rahane said of Rohit’s availability. “His inputs in the next four days will be really important.”Mumbai also have Jaiswal for the upcoming round, although he was among India’s better batters on the tour of Australia, with a knock of 161 in Perth at the start of the series and twin half-centuries in Melbourne. Rahane said the return of Rohit and Jaiswal would add a lot of value in the dressing room too.”As a team, [and] individually, players are going up to them [and] asking questions, learning from them,” Rahane said. “Once they are on the field, I am sure the players will watch them and they’ll learn a lot of things from them.”Rohit and Jaiswal are expected to open together for a star-studded Mumbai line-up that will also see Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube and Shardul Thakur along with other domestic stars such as Shams Mulani, Siddhesh Lad and Tanush Kotian.
