Four England stars Thomas Tuchel could rescue after Southgate struggles

Jordan Henderson’s call-up should have been a fairly quick indication that Thomas Tuchel is ready to hand out second chances in the England set-up before the World Cup. The former Chelsea boss is leading a new era and one which has already featured plenty of old faces as well as some fresh arrivals.

The latest to benefit from that is Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Prior to the arrival of Tuchel, the midfield star hadn’t been called up for England duty since 2018. That was as many as seven years ago now, but he’s seemingly done enough at AC Milan to earn another chance to impress for the Three Lions and make a claim for a World Cup place.

It feels unlikely that he’ll be the final shock inclusion under Tuchel, who has left England fans guessing at every turn. But who could be next to receive a much-welcomed return to the England squad ahead of the World Cup?

4 Fikayo Tomori AC Milan

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori.

Fikayo Tomori was always one that was overlooked by Gareth Southgate and mainly for reasons unknown. He played for one of Europe’s most historic clubs and, last season aside, started almost every week for AC Milan. Yet, it still wasn’t enough for Southgate, who chose to keep his selection in the Premier League for the most part.

Things are changing under Tuchel, however, and Tomori could be the next former Chelsea star back in the squad after Loftus-Cheek. The central defender’s last call-up came in 2019, but after earning his way back into Milan’s starting side, he deserves to get his place back in the Three Lions set-up at long last.

Tuchel has already shown willingness to call players outside the Premier League with the inclusion of AC Milan’s Loftus-Cheek alongside Barcelona’s Marcus Rashford, and should now turn towards Tomori.

3 Jack Grealish Everton

It almost seems inevitable that Jack Grealish will get his England chance before the World Cup. The winger has so far been reborn under David Moyes at Everton – assisting four goals in just two games – and provides a different threat to the quicker, more direct wingers who already have a place under Tuchel.

Grealish was beginning to fall out of love with football at Manchester City. He was refined to a cameo role more often than not, if that, and desperately needed the move that Everton soon granted him.

With the World Cup around nine months away, the Toffees have so far unlocked the version of Grealish that the Premier League last saw at Aston Villa. He is the star of the show at the Hill Dickinson and is well on course to earn back the England place that he lost in 2023.

2 Jadon Sancho Aston Villa

It goes without saying that Jadon Sancho still has a long way to go. He struggled on loan at Chelsea last season, so much so that they paid to get out of their obligation to buy the winger from Manchester United, and has shown all the signs of a player lacking the desire that he once had. But a lot can change in football.

It wasn’t so long ago that Sancho was the talk of European football, and he wasn’t the first player to struggle in a Manchester United shirt after a big-money move. A loan spell back to Borussia Dortmund in the 2023/24 campaign proved that he is still a player full of talent, but that talent must be on show at Aston Villa.

Rashford rediscovered his best form under Unai Emery in a similar move last season. Now, he has his England place back and is a Barcelona player. Sancho must use that example and get back to the type of form that would hand the Three Lions a major boost next summer.

1 Phil Foden Man City

Recent injuries haven’t helped, but there’s no denying that Phil Foden is very much on the peripheral of Pep Guardiola’s current plans. The 25-year-old hasn’t started any of Manchester City’s opening three games and is in danger of taking up the role that Grealish just vacated at the Etihad.

From becoming the Premier League’s Player of the Year in 23/24, the midfielder has now lost his England place and faces a fight to win it back before the World Cup gets underway.

It would be Tuchel’s biggest call to leave Foden out of his side. The Man City man is one of the most talented players that the Three Lions have, but things need to change at the Etihad. His first task is to get back into Guardiola’s Man City side, who have lost two of their three opening games, and then prove why he should be starting every week.

When that comes, then he should naturally find a way back into Tuchel’s plans. For now, however, the England boss has simply thrown down the challenge for Foden to get back to his best.

Kohli makes chasing a total 'look so easy', says Chawla

Wasim Jaffer reckons that Kohli has expanded his range of shots and now has “a game for every situation”

Jaffer: ‘Kohli has the game for every situation’

Virat Kohli steering a chase to its end and walking away unbeaten. How many times have we seen that in white-ball cricket? The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter made 62 off 45 balls as his team beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by nine wickets in Jaipur. The win was set up by RCB’s other opener, Phil Salt, who peppered the boundary, particularly inside the powerplay to lift his team to 65 for 0 in the first six overs. By the time he fell, the visitors only needed 83 off 68 balls. Former India international Piyush Chawla reckons that helped Kohli ease into his innings.”That’s how he is, isn’t it? And that’s why we put him at the top of the list of white-ball cricketers. Just because of this reason,” Chawla said on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut. “When he goes out there, he makes things look so easy.Related

“This was a perfect platform for Virat Kohli. He is getting runs this season. He has started so well. And when you are chasing 173-odd runs and you get that kind of a start with Phil Salt doing what he does best, you know that Virat Kohli will go not out for sure.”Wasim Jaffer felt that Kohli has expanded his repertoire of shots and now has a “game for all situations”. In recent times, Kohli has been more willing to step out to the spinners to throw them off their lengths. He’s also brought out the sweep to good effect.Kohli now has 66 fifty-plus scores in the IPL, the joint-most with David Warner. This was also his 100th half-century in T20 cricket. Kohli has 109 fifty-plus scores in all T20s, just one shy of Chris Gayle, who is second. Warner with 116 leads the list.”He has got a game for all situations,” Jaffer said. “Today we saw him step out and hit sixes. Sometimes, we didn’t see that before. But now he does that, he uses the slog sweep as well.”He is a master. He has got 100-plus fifties in T20s also. Hell of a numbers. I don’t think we should be talking about him, he is such a great player.”

Why Newcastle could be facing instant punishment from UEFA back in UCL

It’s not all good news for Newcastle United back in the Champions League amid reports that they’ve comfortably breached one of UEFA’s rules and could be facing a punishment as a result.

Where Newcastle stand financially

Whilst they were incredibly limited in 2024 when it came to spending in the Premier League, Champions League qualification and player sales quickly solved their domestic problems this summer. As such, Eddie Howe was finally in a position to welcome fresh faces again and after much toing and froing, he secured Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey.

Woltemade’s arrival would have come as a particular relief. The German was one of many options on Newcastle’s list of striker targets, as they were handed rejection after rejection. Eventually, it was the Stuttgart striker that arrived and, to his credit, he’s wasted no time before finding his feet – scoring on his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But after a summer of spending and the record sale of Alexander Isak, where do Newcastle stand financially? Football finance expert Kieram Maguire had his say and compared it to when Aston Villa sold Jack Grealish to Manchester City in 2021.

He told BBC Sport: “It will give them that financial flexibility that they didn’t have 12 months ago when they were forced to do nothing for a couple of windows. You don’t want that repeating, especially when the club are ambitious and aspirational.”

Ready to challenge Woltemade: Newcastle have found a "poor man's Haaland"

Howe might have a secret weapon in the final third at Newcastle.

So, as things stand, it looks as though PIF will satisfy the Premier League’s financial regulations. However, the same may not be said for UEFA’s financial rules. Reports are now suggesting that Newcastle could be facing further trouble away from the pitch.

Newcastle could be facing UEFA punishment

According to The Athletic, Newcastle have comfortably breached UEFA’s loss limit, which allows teams to lose up to £52m over three years. PIF recorded operating losses at St James’ Park worth around £68m in each of the last two seasons and could now be facing a similar punishment to Aston Villa and Chelsea, who were hit with fines earlier this year.

Even after the sale of Isak, the problem that Newcastle have is that UEFA have noted Elliot Anderson’s move to Nottingham Forest as a swap deal with Odysseas Vlachodimos. They’ve also reduced the sale of Allan Saint-Maximin to Al Ahli to nil profit due to the fact that the Saudi club are a shared party with the club.

Newcastle United and PIF chairmanYasirAl-Rumayyan.

Whilst the official financial reports for 2024/25 are yet to be released, it doesn’t look good for Newcastle once again. They will hope that this is the final time that they face such issues after selling big in the summer.

For now, however, it looks as though they’re set to join Villa and Chelsea on the list of Premier League clubs to be hit with a fine by UEFA, unless their accounts provide an unexpected twist.

England seek the same again as West Indies go west in search of answers

England wouldn’t mind the one-way traffic continuing while WI will hope Lewis’ return adds impetus up top

Andrew Miller31-May-2025

England were a ruthless outfit in the series opener•AFP/Getty Images

Big picture: England lay down their markerEdgbaston 2015 was the scene of England’s original white-ball reboot, when Eoin Morgan’s unfettered underachievers shed the reticence and blazed their way to a then-record total of 408 for 6 against New Zealand. Ten years later, the same venue produced a similar onslaught, an even 400 against West Indies, after a remarkable run of 30-plus scores from each of the top seven, with Jacob Bethell’s 82 from 53 balls the stand-out.There, for the time being, however, the parallels end. Because, while there was plenty in this latest performance for England to take pleasure in, the standard of the challenge wasn’t quite on a par with the Brendon McCullum-inspired Kiwis who had reached their first World Cup final only months earlier.West Indies have missed each of their last two ICC 50-over tournaments – the 2023 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy – and on Thursday’s evidence, it’s not hard to see why. A guileless bowling display bled into a batting performance that lacked body or substance, and had it not been for an unlikely top-score of 29 not out from Jayden Seales at No.11, this would have been the heaviest defeat in their once-proud ODI history. It doesn’t augur well for the remainder of the series, though England – it should be stressed – will not mind a jot if the one-way traffic continues. A win is a win is a win, especially when you have come into the contest off the back of seven consecutive defeats, their worst run since the dog days of 2001. That includes a Champions Trophy display so bad that they might have preferred the West Indies option of watching on helplessly from the sidelines, rather than the middle.Jamie Overton’s finger injury is the only lasting cloud from that contest – he has now been ruled out of the rest of the white-ball series after being diagnosed with a fracture. Saqib Mahmood’s impeccable command of line and length once again marked him out as a real asset in the powerplay, while Brydon Carse’s successful return from a gruesome toe injury was no less significant given his likely workload across formats this summer. In the batting stakes, Jamie Smith’s promotion to open proved an immediate success. He’ll face more challenging new-ball spells, no doubt, but the power and placement of his strokeplay brooked no argument. And talking of which, Harry Brook’s happy knack of rising to the responsibility of leadership shows no sign of abating. His sixth match in charge, and first in an official capacity, produced a fourth consecutive half-century, and it took a fine catch to dislodge him when well set.West Indies haven’t got a lot to write home about just yet. Gudakesh Motie was the pick of their bowlers at Edgbaston, though 7-0-39-0 is not exactly tearing up trees, while Seales’ 4 for 84 from nine overs at least provided some reward for his willingness to go to the well. Their batting, however, never got started. Maybe Evin Lewis’ recovery from a groin injury could offer some more impetus at the top. But, with the IPL’s latter stages having taken Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd out of contention for this campaign, it’s clear the issues that beset West Indies cricket aren’t simply related to individuals.Form guideEngland WLLLL
West Indies LWLWWIn the spotlight: Jacob Bethell and Shai HopeThe golden child was at it again on Thursday. Bethell has still not made a century in his brief professional career, but already he’s one of the most sought-after all-format players in England’s ranks. His Test-best 96 in New Zealand came amid a run of three half-centuries at No.3 that have stirred the pot ahead of India’s visit next month, while his cameo for IPL finalists RCB impressed no less a figure than Mr Aura himself, Virat Kohli. And now, an effortlessly competent 82 from 53 balls in only his tenth ODI. All of England’s new-look team are learning the format on the hoof. He’s got to grips with it as quickly as anyone.A lot has happened since that famous Headingley Test in 2017, when Shai Hope’s twin hundreds secured an extraordinary win against the head (straight after a shellacking at Edgbaston, no less). And if his role in Test cricket has fallen away in recent times, then it’s worth remembering it wasn’t so long ago that he was teaching England a few lessons in how to pace an ODI innings. In consecutive winters in 2023 and 2024, he produced superb centuries in Antigua. The former secured a memorable 326-run chase, the latter required the rarely-seen best of Liam Livingstone to outgun it. If anyone is to provide some traction to their batting, Hope must spring eternal.Brook enjoyed a good day out in his first match as captain•Getty Images

Team news: Overton out, Potts inThere was never any danger of wholesale changes from England just yet – their batting is in fine order, and Gujarat Titans’ IPL elimination removes any threat of Jos Buttler negotiating an early release to take on RCB in the final. Overton’s finger injury gives Matthew Potts a chance to feature after being named in every squad so far this summer, even though they may have been tempted by the point of difference offered by Luke Wood’s left-armers.England: 1 Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, 3 Joe Root, 4 Harry Brook (capt), 5 Jos Buttler (wk), 6 Jacob Bethell, 7 Will Jacks, 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Matthew Potts, 11 Saqib MahmoodEvin Lewis was struck in the groin while batting on the eve of the first ODI, so assuming he’s recovered, he’s likely to slot back in at the top, potentially at the expense of Jewel Andrew, who nevertheless looked as competent as anyone in his brief stay at Edgbaston. Justin Greaves opened in Lewis’s absence, and may slip back down the order. Seales’ four expensive wickets may keep him ahead of Shamar Joseph.West Indies: (possible) 1 Brandon King, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Keacy Carty, 4 Shai Hope (capt & wk), 5 Amir Jangoo, 6 Justin Greaves, 7 Roston Chase, 8 Matthew Forde, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Gudakesh Motie, 11 Jayden SealesPitch and conditions: Bright weather in prospectThe sun has returned in time for the weekend in Wales, so hot weather (by British standards) is in prospect. Cardiff is notorious for its short straight boundaries and deep pockets square of the wicket, so hit-the-deck, cross-seam bowling might prove fruitful through the middle overs.Stats and trivia West Indies haven’t won a bilateral ODI series in England since 2007. Their last such visit, in 2017, resulted in a 4-0 defeat. Root needs 42 runs to overtake Eoin Morgan as England’s leading scorer in ODIs. Another 84 will make him the first Englishman to 7000. Roston Chase is 47 runs short of 1000 in ODIs.Quotes”We know we’ve got to match that intensity and the performance from the other day, because it’s going to be a tough challenge. They’ve got a lot of match winners… Even though we played well, we still left a lot of things out there and we had good chats about that.
Will Jacks is not resting on his laurels after the opening ODI“It’s good when batsmen play out of their skin, but when you know you have a plan and you’ve not really given it a chance to work, that’s the most annoying thing.”
West Indies’ coach, Daren Sammy, was less impressed with his team’s performance.

Liverpool have a future Ballon d'Or nominee who could soon dethrone Salah

Despite slipping to a late defeat on the road at Crystal Palace on Saturday, Liverpool remain at the summit of the Premier League for the time being.

Arne Slot and Co had five straight league wins to thank for their table-topping position, but the concerning nature of their defeat at the hands of Oliver Glasner’s Palace will make those with connections to the Anfield giants worry about more crushing losses to come.

It’s too soon to be furiously pounding the panic button, but there will still be an uneasiness in the air surrounding Mohamed Salah’s poor performances of late, as the ageing winger now inevitably faces the winding down of his esteemed playing days.

Salah's poor performances in numbers

Staggeringly, if you remove his opening day strike against AFC Bournemouth from the equation, Salah only has a last-minute penalty against Burnley to shout about for his goalscoring efforts this season.

He does also have two assists next to his name, but it was a worryingly sub-par showing from the usually enigmatic Egyptian against the tough to break down Eagles, with Tyrick Mitchell managing to make the “world-class” ace – as he was once dubbed by Jurgen Klopp – look ordinary.

Salah was arguably lucky to last the full 90 minutes, with the lacklustre number 11 managing to complete none of his dribble attempts to try and catch out a resolute Palace defence, while also squandering two big chances to try and keep the Reds’ 100% record intact.

It does feel rather far-fetched that Salah will be dropped, though, even with these off-days popping up, but Slot will have one eye on the future now, surely, with the left-footed ace coming in at 33 years of age.

Thankfully, Liverpool do have some shiny starlets in the youth set-up who will be desperate to make more considerable strides in the first team picture soon, with one rising attacker maybe even aiming to become the next Salah in time.

Liverpool's up and coming Salah heir

When the day comes that Salah leaves Anfield behind, it will be an extremely tough task to try and instantly replace the Egyptian’s unmistakable star quality.

Despite visible chinks in his armour now appearing, Salah does boast an unbelievable 248 goals and 116 assists for the Reds, with two Premier League triumphs and a Champions League trophy lifted off the back of his blistering heroics.

Still, everybody has their day in the sun before they have to walk away, and with Liverpool already beginning to put the pieces together for a new-look attack with Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, and Florian Wirtz in through the door this summer, there could soon be a queue of candidates wanting to take over from the modern day icon as Liverpool’s electric spark down the flanks.

Rio Ngumoha might well fancy his chances at being a long-term successor to Salah’s throne, having already lit up the Premier League this season with a Salah-like moment of quality when breaking Newcastle United hearts with a last-gasp winner at St. James’ Park.

In the right place at the right time to smash home that decisive strike, the tricky 17-year-old also managed to complete one successful dribble, despite only being present on the Tyneside turf for eight minutes.

Having also scored and assisted for fun in pre-season for Slot’s men – with two goals and two assists registered against the likes of Athletic Bilbao and AC Milan – it does feel like only a matter of time before Nguhoma enters into the Dutchman’s first team plans and remains there.

The future is immensely bright for this talented teen, with his former youth coach in Saul Isaksson-Hurst even going as far as to say he could one day make the Ballon d’Or shortlist like Salah.

Nguhoma’s current moment in the spotlight at Anfield could have well been Chelsea’s own success story in an alternate reality, with the teenage sensation lining up nine times for the Chelsea U18s before moving to Merseyside.
