Liverpool fans bemoan Thiago injury news

A number of Liverpool supporters have bemoaned an injury update regarding Thiago, with the midfielder set to miss this week’s two matches.

The Reds enjoyed another productive weekend of Premier League action, winning 3-0 at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday thanks to goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita.

An otherwise positive afternoon was ruined slightly by Thiago’s injury, with the Spaniard limping off with a calf issue in the second half.

It is the latest fitness setback for Liverpool, who have already lost Harvey Elliott to a dislocated ankle injury suffered at Leeds United earlier this month.

On Monday, the club’s official Twitter account and website confirmed that Thiago would miss Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Norwich City, as well as the trip to Brentford in the league on Saturday.

Liverpool linked to Kingsley Coman

Liverpool were recently linked with a move for Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman and the player could be available for a transfer at the end of the season if the opinion of a former Bayern official is correct.

What’s the story?

The Reds were one of several sides believed to be keen on securing the highly-rated 25-year-old’s services over the summer, but he ended up staying put due to his £86 million price tag despite the extensive speculation.

Now though, in an interview with German outlet BILD TV (as relayed by The Mirror), Bayern’s ex-sporting director Christian Nerlinger was asked about Coman’s future as he continues to be linked with a move away from Bavaria.

“I don’t think he will stay in Munich. Bayern had a recent tendency to lose players for free,” Nerlinger stated.

“But you can’t do that in the long run; you have to sell players from time to time if the offer is right. Coman is an excellent player, but given the situation, I think Bayern will consider selling him.”

Coman’s current contract expires in the summer of 2023, meaning Die Roten may only have the next two transfer windows to secure a substantial fee for the forward’s services.

Fans would be buzzing

The France international is set to be out until October, after making just four appearances this season, due to discovering a minor cardiac arrhythmia, which had seen him struggle with shortness of breath.

“‘King’ had an operation yesterday, he had a minor heart rhythm disturbance. I’ll explain that with my little medical expertise,” Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann revealed at a press conference on Saturday:

“There are two strands that activate the sinus node. One of them was cut off so that there would be no additional blow. Sometimes he had less air for a short time and was less productive.

“That’s why we did a long-term ECG (electrocardiogram) and found something that could be fixed quickly,” the young tactician explained.

It’s a potentially concerning setback for Coman, but the skilful forward has already achieved so much in his career. Despite being just 25, he has already won 24 major trophies in his career, including the Champions League, and was lauded by his youth coaches from an early age.

“His reading of the game and his technique stand out and make him formidable,” claimed France’s Under-17 coach Patrick Gonfalone back in 2012, when Coman was just 16.

Liverpool supporters would likely be buzzing if their club could secure a deal for Coman.

The Reds do seem a bit short of attacking options following the departure of Xherdan Shaqiri, and Klopp’s charges lack the strength in depth of their domestic rivals.

Coman’s arrival at Anfield would change that, though, and he could provide the necessary spark for Liverpool to return to the Premier League summit.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Dominic Revan loan

Aston Villa centre-back Dominic Revan sealed a deadline day loan move to League Two side Northampton Town.

And a number of Villa supporters have been reacting to the confirmation on social media.

The 20-year-old, who’s only senior appearance for Villa came in the FA Cup against Liverpool last season, has joined The Cobblers on a temporary basis until January.

Fellow Villa youngster Mungo Bridge also departed Bodymoor Heath on loan in the final hours of the window, taking the number of Under-23’s leaving the club on loan to gain first-team experience to 11.

Revan spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign with National League side Weymouth, so will be making a step up in quality as he looks to continue his development.

Liverpool: Fans react to Xherdan Shaqiri update

Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri is closing in on a move to Ligue 1 outfit Lyon, as reported by prominent transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio on Twitter.

In 2020/21, the Switzerland international registered five goal contributions in 22 fixtures for the Reds; one goal and four assists [Transfermarkt].

Now, he looks set to depart Anfield after three years at the club owing to recent developments. As relayed by Di Marzio to his followers on social media, Shaqiri is ‘very close’ to a move to France.

The French giants are said to have offered a fee of around €6million to Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp’s men believed to be holding out for around €8M for his services.

With an agreement expected to be reached soon, no wonder loads of Liverpool diehards took to social media to vent their reactions to the update.

Liverpool FC fans react:

Replying to Gianluca Di Marzio on Twitter, here is what some Liverpool fans had to say about the notion of Shaqiri departing for France:

Spurs in talks to sign Milenkovic

Writing on Twitter, Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has shared news coming out of Tottenham Hotspur involving Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic.

The Lowdown: Spurs in defender hunt…

It has been widely reported that Tottenham and new managing director of football Fabio Paratici could add at least two new defenders before the window closes on August 31.

Spurs have already secured Serie A MVP award-winner Cristian Romero on a deal from Atalanta and have been linked with many others.

One name that has now been tipped by reliable sources is Milenkovic, with Sky reporter Thomas sharing some news out of N17.

The Latest: Spurs ‘in talks’ to sign Milenkovic…

As per the journalist, Spurs are now in talks to sign the Serbia international defender as his proposed move to West Ham United stalls.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Milenkovic was thought to be at very advanced stage of his mooted transfer to east London but it seems Spurs will try to steal a march on their English capital rivals.

“Tottenham are in talks for Nikola Milenkovic after his proposed move to West Ham broke down,” explained Thomas on Twitter.

“Also some interest from Wolves.”

The Lowdown: Get it done Paratici…

The centre-back, we believe, could undoubtedly be a brilliant potential partner to Romero in the heart of Nuno Espirito Santo’s defence.

Standing at a colossal 6 foot 4, only Eric Dier in the Spurs squad managed to win more aerial duels per 90 than Milenkovic over 2020/2021 – highlighting his real physical presence (WhoScored).

As well as this, journalist Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic once described a possible Milenkovic deal as ‘straightforward’ amid Spurs’ interest – and it is believed he could leave Italy for as little as €15 million (£12.7m).

Still young, the defender could also gain Spurs plenty of sell-on value in years to come if he continues to perform at a high level in the Premier League.

United interested in Willy Caballero

Sheffield United are interested in a deal to bring Willy Caballero to Bramall Lane over what remains of the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun on Sunday (via Football League World), who claim that the former Manchester City and Chelsea goalkeeper is on Slavisa Jokanovic’s list of potential Aaron Ramsdale replacements, with the Serbian hoping to bring in a new shot-stopper prior to the closure of the transfer window on Tuesday.

The report continues by stating that the Blades have gone as far as to open contract talks with the 39-year-old free agent, however, the length of this deal, or whether or not the Argentina international would be open to a move to the Championship club, is not disclosed.

Big mistake

While Caballero is undoubtedly a player who boasts a vast amount of experience, having made 117 appearances in LaLiga, 34 appearances in the Premier League and 22 appearances in both the Champions League and the Europa League, when taking into account the goalkeeper’s age and recent history, it is not a difficult argument to make that his signing would be a big mistake on the part of Jokanovic.

Indeed, following his move to Chelsea back in 2017, the £225k-rated man went on to make just 38 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, with only 11 of these fixtures coming in the league.

Furthermore, when the former Malaga ‘keeper was selected in the top flight, he very rarely impressed, earning a SofaScore match rating of 5.7 in his one Premier League appearance last season – a 3-3 draw with West Bromwich Albion – and picked up a disappointing average SofaScore match rating of 6.58 over his five league fixtures in 2019/20.

As such, whether or not Caballero is a goalkeeper who can be trusted over the course of what is sure to be a long and arduous Championship season is very much up for debate – with the stats appearing to suggest that the 39-year-old would not be up for the task.

So, while time is running out for Jokanovic to bring in a replacement for Ramsdale, it would nevertheless appear highly advisable for the Serbian manager to turn his attention over what remains of the summer transfer window elsewhere, as his side can do much better than Caballero.

Sky Sports drop Rice update live on air

Speaking to Sky Sports (via Football Daily), journalist Dharmesh Sheth has dropped some news on Declan Rice and his situation at West Ham United.

The Lowdown: Rice refuses new deal offers…

The Telegraph first broke news that Rice had rejected two new deal offers from West Ham and is open to considering moves to interested clubs. with Man City, Man United and Chelsea all linked.

West Ham’s star man is also expected to reject any new attempts to tie him down at the London Stadium and wants to be informed of any new bids this summer.

The Hammers value him at around £100 million but Rice would apparently be disappointed if they dismiss offers in the region of £60m.

The Latest: Sheth drops Rice news live on air…

Speaking to Sky (via FD), Sheth has now shared some news on Rice and Manchester United’s stance on swooping.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments/” title=”West Ham latest developments…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed that West Ham are remaining stubborn when it comes to allowing the 22-year-old to leave this summer and the Red Devils now have zero plans to make a bid.

“I’m told, as it stands, there are no plans to move for Declan Rice in this transfer window,” Sheth explained.

“What’s more, West Ham United simply aren’t for selling in this transfer window, are the noises that we’re getting from West Ham.”

The Verdict: Good news for West Ham?

News of the Red Devils not planning to make a move, as it stands, could come as good news for West Ham given their desire to keep the player.

United are one of the only few clubs who could realistically afford Rice alongside Chelsea and City, with the Premier League giants now seemingly eliminating themselves from the transfer race.

West Ham are set to compete in the Europa League group stages over what will be a more hectic 2021/2022 season, so Moyes will certainly be boosted by this news involving their star player.

Enjoying a fantastic 2020/21 campaign, the Jamaican registered 26 goal contributions in 40 appearances; 15 goals and 11 assists [Transfermarkt].

AVFC: Discussions underway for Todd Cantwell

Aston Villa have made contact and are in discussions with Norwich City over a deal for Todd Cantwell, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Grealish’s exit

As we now know, Jack Grealish is no longer an Aston Villa player. He became the most expensive signing by a British club, joining Manchester City in a deal worth £100m.

Grealish has signed a six-year deal at the Etihad and will wear the number ten shirt vacated by Sergio Aguero, with Villa’s attention now on bringing in reinforcements following his exit.

Sky Sports believed Villa were expected to pursue Cantwell if Grealish left, and it seems as if they are doing just that.

The Latest: Source shares update

According to Football Insider, who were informed by a Villa source, the club are working on a deal for the 23-year-old.

Discussions are ongoing, so contact has been made, with Villa keen to make Cantwell their fourth big-money signing of the summer after Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings.

Cantwell, who is under the same agency as Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho, has rebuffed attempts to extend his Carrow Road deal.

The Verdict: Good planning

Villa, as Christian Purslow admitted, have planned for Grealish’s exit, and it appears as if Cantwell, who has 15 assists to his name in his fledgling senior career, is their main attacking midfield target.

It’s good to see that Villa are already acting on bringing in a replacement, but it could take upwards of £40-£50m to sign the Norwich man.

You’d expect Villa would want to secure a deal relatively quickly with the new season just around the corner, so there could well be significant developments over the weekend on what has the potential to be a second record signing of the summer at Villa Park.

In other news: ‘So scary’, ‘You what?’ – Lots of Aston Villa fans erupt at confirmed news.
