Morgan Rogers stays at Aston Villa! England international agrees new contract until 2031 after fighting off suitors in summer

Aston Villa have reportedly reached an agreement with Morgan Rogers over a new long-term contract. The 23-year-old's deal was set to expire in 2030, so Unai Emery's team are in a strong position when it comes to resisting interest from potential suitors in the coming months. Now, the attacking midfielder is said to be nearing a contract extension at Villa Park.

  • Aston Villa secure Rogers breakthrough

Like Villa's slow start to the season, the former Middlesbrough star looked lethargic, uninspired, and a shadow of the player who starred for much of last campaign. Indeed, in late August, he may have opened the door to a potential Villa exit in the not-so-distant future, despite being "happy" to be there.

He said, "I’m happy here [Aston Villa]. I love football. I love nothing more than just coming out on the pitch and playing football and that’s what I’m doing. I don’t think about anything else. I can’t predict the next 12 months or anything in the future. It’s just about playing football, enjoying my football and showing everyone what I can do."

But in recent weeks, the England international's strong form has reappeared for both club and country. Now, The Athletic reports that he will sign a new deal until 2031, which will make him one of Villa's highest earners.

    Tuchel praises Rogers

Even though Rogers had a slow start to the season, England boss Thomas Tuchel has backed him to the hilt – even to the point of preferring him over Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham.

After England's 3-0 win over Wales last month, the German said of Rogers: "Morgan was excellent like the whole team, he's very humble, he's very physical. He has the ability to score and to assist. He had a fantastic season (in 2024-25) and was deservedly voted as the young player of the season in the Premier League. Morgan was one piece of the puzzle but it is a team effort.

"Morgan is what he is. He is a number 10 and he is competing for his place. He is in a good way. We are ready for any team effort. Serbia was the next example of teamwork. We created a lot of chances. We could use Harry Kane all the time, but we need to play without Harry and Jude – the guys are injured."

  • Emery wants Rogers to kick on

Rogers, who reportedly is being 'coveted by leading sides in the Premier League and abroad, has been challenged by Villa boss Emery to take his game to the next level. This season, he has one goal and three assists in 15 appearances, whereas last term, he notched 30 goal contributions.

He said in October: "Every individual player needs the team. They need the structure and the shape to feel comfortable and to feel confident, and to set their individual performance. Morgan Rogers, he is improving at the same time which the team is improving and getting better, because he is feeling comfortable and confident to show his qualities and his power in everything. The goals and assists, his movement and confidence to beat an opponent is coming progressively through the team. Other players, we should help them as well to help them feel like Morgan is feeling and performing. We need to help and support every player, their qualities and characteristics in our structure. I will want to see more improvements, getting better and having the numbers, or overcoming the numbers he had last season with us."

    Busy period for Rogers

Like Rogers, Villa have rebounded well from a sluggish beginning to the 2025/26 Premier League season, but they are still 11th in the table. Next up, they host high-flying Bournemouth at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon, before heading off for the international break. After that, Rogers could be in action for England as Tuchel's side prepare for their final two World Cup qualifiers, this time against Serbia and Albania on November 13 and 16, respectively.

Brewers Promote Flamethrowing Top Pitching Prospect

The Milwaukee Brewers appear set to add to a successful young pitching staff.

The Brewers are summoning pitcher Jacob Misiorowski from the Triple-A Nashville Sounds, according to a Tuesday afternoon report from Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Misiorowski, a 23-year-old native of Blue Springs, Mo., is 4-2 this season with the Sounds. He has a 2.13 ERA and has struck out 80 batters in 63 1/3 innings. Notably, his fastball has topped out at 103 MPH.

He joins an improving Milwaukee team that sits three games behind the San Diego Padres in the race for the National League's final wild-card playoff spot.

The Brewers have made do this season with a young pitching staff that includes 26-year-old rookie Chad Patrick, 24-year-old Quinn Priester, and 26-year-old Tobias Myers. Even Milwaukee lifer Freddy Peralta just turned 29 on Wednesday.

After finishing their current series against the Atlanta Braves, the Brewers will face the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs back-to-back in series rife with postseason implications.

Mitchell puts New Zealand ahead despite middle-order collapse

New Zealand remain on top after taking a 158-run lead

Hemant Brar31-Jul-2025The Zimbabwe bowlers put in a more disciplined performance on the second day of the first Test in Bulawayo, but Daryl Mitchell’s gritty 80 ensured New Zealand kept their advantage intact.New Zealand started the day on 92 for no loss and marched to 158 for 1 before losing five wickets for 42 runs. But Mitchell, with the help of the lower order, steered them to 307, ensuring a lead of 158. New Zealand then removed the Zimbabwe openers before stumps, still 127 ahead. In the morning, Blessing Muzarabani gave Zimbabwe a dream start, removing Will Young with the first ball of the day. It was a short delivery and Young fended it towards Nick Welch, who was slightly deeper than usual at short leg and completed the catch with a dive. Welch was not sure if he had taken it cleanly, but the TV umpire found no issues with it.Devon Conway was fluent at the other end. With Muzarabani and Tanaka Chivanga operating from around the wicket, he used the cover drive to good effect and picked up three boundaries with it in three successive overs. Muzarabani switched to over the wicket to deny Conway but by then he was into the last over of his spell.Henry Nicholls, playing his first Test since December 2023, came in at No. 3 and looked a little uncertain. The Zimbabwe seamers found his outside edge a couple of times but they did not carry to the slip cordon. Nicholls grew in confidence as he spent time in the middle. When Newman Nyamhuri missed his line or length, he pounced on it, taking 22 runs off just 24 balls from the left-arm seamer. During this, he also completed 3000 Test runs.Blessing Muzarabani celebrates Michael Bracewell’s dismissal•Zimbabwe CricketConway and Nicholls took New Zealand into the lead before Muzarabani returned to end the 66-run stand for the second wicket. Seeing Nicholls back away, Muzarabani followed him. Two balls earlier, Nicholls had hit a boundary using the same ploy. But this time, he was cramped and ended up hitting the ball straight to Brian Bennett at gully. That triggered a collapse in which New Zealand lost five wickets for 42 runs.Rachin Ravindra was the next to fall, edging Sikandar Raza to slip, where Craig Ervine completed an otherwise regulation catch on the second attempt. After lunch, Chivanga got the reward for his hard work. His extra bounce had Conway, on 88, miscuing an uppercut to Bennett, who took his second catch at gully. In his next over, Chivanga used the short ball to get rid of Tom Blundell, who pulled one into the lap of deep square leg.Muzarabani, too, used the short ball to have Michael Bracewell top-edging a pull. For a moment, it looked like wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga had misjudged it but he put in a full-stretch dive in the end to complete the catch near fine leg. That left New Zealand at 200 for 6.Mitchell and Mitchell Santner added 33 for the seventh wicket to lend the innings some stability before Santner chipped one back to legspinner Vincent Masekesa. After that, Mitchell took the lead. In the company of Nathan Smith, he brought up his fifty and added 61 for the eighth wicket. Smith played his part by scoring 22 and resisting for 79 balls, of which he took two on the body. He had to eventually retire hurt. With Matt Henry falling soon after and Smith not coming back, Mitchell was forced to take risks. He moved across his stumps to scoop Nyamhuri but missed and lost his middle stump. By then, though, New Zealand had regained their advantage. They extended it when Henry had Ben Curran hooking one to fine leg and Will O’Rourke had Bennett edging one to the wicketkeeper before stumps.

Arsenal women's player ratings vs Bayern Munich: Mariona Caldentey's magic counts for nothing as Pernille Harder haunts the holders in stunning Champions League fightback

Arsenal squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to German giants Bayern Munich on a thrilling night at the Allianz Arena in an early blow to the holders' Champions League hopes. The Gunners dominated the first 45 minutes, and seemed comfortably on course for a vital three points, but they capitulated in the second half as Bayern turned the game on its head and will be left to rue three dropped points in Bavaria.

Arsenal came flying out the blocks from the start and were much the better of the two sides in the opening stages. The pressure told in the fifth minute as Emily Fox capitalised on an error from the keeper, following a shot from Beth Mead, to head home from close range. And the north Londoners doubled their lead midway through the first half after Bayern lost the ball on the edge of their own box. After a neat one-two, Mariona Caldentey did brilliantly to shift the ball out of her feet and fire past rooted Bayern keeper Mala Grohs and into the roof of the net.

But the hosts were much improved in the second period, and capitalised on their dominance with a goal back on the hour. Bayern broke with the Gunners high up the field and Klara Buhl squared to Alara Sehitler, who found herself in acres of space and clipped the ball past Daphne van Domselaar. The teams were all-square with 10 minutes remaining as substitute Pernille Harder was allowed space on the edge of the box to loop an unorthodox but brilliant shot over Van Domselaar. It was Harder's seventh strike against the Gunners following her time at Chelsea.

And the turnaround was completed with four minutes remaining after Bayern captain Glodis Viggosdottir directed the ball home from close range following another assist from Buhl.

Daphne van Domselaar (5/10):

Was a virtual spectator in the first-half as the hosts struggled to play through Arsenal's high press. But she was much busier in the second-half, called upon to make a number of important saves, was left woefully exposed for Bayern's first goal and there was nothing she could do for the equaliser or the winner.

Emily Fox (7/10):

Did brilliantly to capitalise on an error from the Bayern keeper to give Arsenal the lead, heading home a loose ball from close range. Was called-on to do much more defending in the second-half as Arsenal regressed towrds their own goal.

Stephanie Catley (5/10):

Continued her partnership with Wubben-Moy and showed great pace in her recovery runs. But was caught out holding a very high line for Bayern's goal and stood off Harder for the equaliser.

Lottie Wubben-Moy (5/10):

Similar evening to her partner in defence Catley. Hardly put a foot wrong, but was caught flat-footed as Bayern broke quickly upfield to reduce the deficit in the 67th minute. Was too slow to close down Harder for Bayern's leveller.

Katie McCabe (6/10):

Had a relatively quiet evening and was replaced in the 75th minute.

Victoria Pelova (6/10):

A busy evening and did huge amounts of running, was replaced in the 75th minute by Cooney-Cross.

Beth Mead (6/10):

Credited with the assist for the first goal, her powerful low shot was only palmed down by the goalkeeper and into Fox's path. Was involved in the second goal, too Enjoyed a productive evening, seeing lots of the ball and will be pleased with her performance. Boss Slegers will be pleased to see her run off a very hefty challenge in the 50th minute.

Caitlin Foord (6/10):

Enjoyed a productive evening, but was hooked in the 60th minute, replaced by Chloe Kelly.

Mariona Caldentey (7/10):

Capitalised on some dreadful defending on the edge of the Bayern box and thrashed home an unstoppable drive from 20 yards out to make it 2-0 in the 23rd minute. Was an excellent influence all evening, a creative spark whenever she was on the ball.

AFPAttack

Alessia Russo (7/10):

Saw plenty of the ball and will be disappointed to not get on the scoresheet. Saw a long-distance drive well-save by the keeper and deserved more for her efforts.

Stina Blackstenius (6/10):

Almost scored a wonderful goal in the 23rd minute, but saw her fierce strike clatter off the top of the cross bar. A constant threat to the Bayern defence, but was taken off in the 60th minute.

Chloe Kelly (5/10):

England Lionesses hero had to make do with a place on the bench and was brought into the action on the hour. But with the Gunners on the back foot, she found it hard to make any major impact at the other end of the field.

Frida Maanum (5/10):

Squandered a wonderful opportunity with 10 minutes to go after some excellent work from Russo, will be disappointed to panic when given a great opportunity.

Kyra Cooney-Cross (5/10):

Made little impact after coming on with 15 minutes to go.

Taylor Hinds (5/10):

Struggled to influence the game after coming on, was on the back foot as Bayern attacked in their droves.

Renee Slegers (4/10):

Will be shell-shocked by the scoreline after her team looked so good in the first-half. But failed to make the most of Russo's attacking intent and allowed the hosts to completely dominate after the break.

Rehan stars as Rockets cling on in three-wicket thriller

Trent Rockets 113 for 7 (Rehan 37) beat Birmingham Phoenix 111 for 9 (Rehan 3-15) by three wicketsTrent Rockets geared up for their Eliminator showdown with Northern Superchargers by sneaking past Birmingham Phoenix with one ball to spare after a memorable debut in The Hundred for Ben Cox and an eye-catching all-round display from Rehan Ahmed. The Rockets confirmed their second-place finish in the group, behind Oval Invincibles on net run rate, and will go into Saturday evening’s contest at the Kia Oval full of confidence after claiming their sixth win in eight.Spin was the key for the Rockets, with their slow bowlers producing combined figures of 6 for 35 from 50 deliveries after Ben Duckett (20 from 15) and Will Smeed (23 from 12) had made a promising start.Rockets skipper David Willey may have been questioning his decision to insert the opposition when the Phoenix raced to 36 for 0 from 21 deliveries, but the innings stalled when Duckett scuffed a short delivery from Lockie Ferguson to Rehan at midwicket.Joe Clarke soon followed, slog-sweeping southpaw spinner George Linde to deep midwicket, and from there the wickets tumbled. The irrepressible Rehan (3 for 15) induced a chop-on from Smeed and snared Jacob Bethell for a duck three deliveries later before Linde (2 for 12) claimed his second when Liam Livingstone’s ugly heave met thin air.Rehan grabbed his third – and 10th in the competition overall – when Benny Howell picked out Max Holden on the boundary and Joe Root, whose 15 deliveries cost just eight runs, got in on the action when Liam Patterson-White’s edge was brilliantly held by Cox, who only received a call-up to join the Rockets yesterday following an injury to Adam Hose.Dan Mousley (26 from 25) gave the score some respectability but 111-9 looked well under par, even on a spin-friendly surface. The chase was far from easy though. After the early loss of Tom Banton for 1, caught at mid-on off Boult, Rehan sparkled once more, racing to 37 in 23 balls before an audacious slog sweep was caught in the deep off Livingstone. Root continued his good recent form in the tournament with a run-a-ball 25 that came to an end when he was bowled by Patterson-White and the left-arm spinner struck again five deliveries later, castling Willey with a devilish delivery that spun back sharply between bat and pad.Linde was run-out after a mix-up and Marcus Stoinis got a leading edge to cover off Bethell as the Rockets slipped to 89-6, and the left-arm spinner struck again when Sam Hain holed out to leave six required from five.Bethell was entrusted with the final set and conceded just three runs from his first three deliveries but Cox kept a cool head and swept the fourth to the boundary to finish unbeaten on 17 from 12 balls.Named Meerkat Match Hero after his three wickets and quickfire knock, Rehan said: “Coxy was always going to do it, I had full trust in him. There was a lot of assistance for spinners on this pitch. We train on similar surfaces so it was about going out there and doing the same thing. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity I’ve been given and hopefully I can do it in the next couple of games.”

Gus Atkinson takes five as India collapse for 224

He took three of the remaining four India wickets that India had when they arrived on Friday morning on 204 for 6

Gus Atkinson’s fourth five-wicket haul helped England make light work of what remained of India’s first innings of the fifth Test, dismissing them for 224.Atkinson’s 5 for 33 upon his return to the XI after two months out was all the more important after news this morning that Chris Woakes would play no further part in the match after a suspected dislocated shoulder sustained in the field last evening. And the Surrey quick, on his home ground, took three of the remaining four wickets that India had up their sleeve when they arrived on Friday morning on 204 for 6.It was Josh Tongue who made the first key incision, albeit with a choatic approach that would get any surgeon struck off. His first over, opening from the Vauxhall End, went for nine, but he was able to remove Karun Nair for 57 in his second. A sharp delivery that nipped into the stumps – Nair no doubt expected something short and wide either side of them – pinned the right-hander on the back leg. Plumb in front, Nair took one of India’s three reviews with him.Washington Sundar should have assumed the responsibility at that point as an elongated tail became exposed, but he fell five deliveries later, waltzing into a short ball trap, heaving Atkinson to deep square leg, where Jamie Overton sprinted in to take a smart catch.Atkinson would then skittle Mohammed Siraj before Prasidh Krishna felt for a delivery outside off, completing a collapse of four for six in 18 balls. This is now the lowest first innings total of the series. The previous lowest was India’s 358 at Manchester.Atkinson now boasts an average of 21, the fourth best for an England seamer with fifty or more dismissals, and the second best strike rate, ever, at 34.9, for those who have taken 60 wickets.

Marcus Stroman Changes Course on Stance About Coming Out of Bullpen for Yankees

The New York Yankees are set to get Marcus Stroman back from the injured list in the coming days, as the veteran pitcher made his first rehab appearance on Wednesday.

When he returns, it remains to be seen whether the team will use him out of the bullpen or reinsert him into the starting rotation. Previously, Stroman had expressed that he didn't want to be used as a relief pitcher, making clear he preferred to be used as a starter. It seems he's had a change of heart in that regard since initially declaring he wasn't willing to come out of the bullpen back in February.

"I'm open to anything," Stroman told reporters after Wednesday's start for Double A Somerset, via Brendan Kuty of .

The right-hander pitched 3 1/3 innings in the first appearance of his minor league rehab assignment. He recorded four strikeouts, two walks and surrendered one earned run and one hit. He last pitched in MLB on April 11, when he lasted just 2/3 of an inning and surrendered five runs against the San Francisco Giants. He was placed on the 15-day IL with knee inflammation the following day.

Stroman has made three starts this year and owns an unsightly 11.57 ERA. He has seven strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings on the mound. The 34-year-old said that he and the team haven't discussed what his role will be with the Yankees when he returns, but he made clear he's open to whatever the team asks of him.

Hutton, Abbas take Nottinghamshire to the brink of Championship title

Seamers do the needful against Warwickshire, as Surrey collapse opens door to points victory

Warwickshire 258 (Mousley 74, Barnard 48, Young 48, Hutton 4-46, Abbas 3-33) vs Nottinghamshire Nottinghamshire are within 300 runs of securing the Rothesay County Championship crown after bowling out Warwickshire for 258 on day one at Trent Bridge.Needing to secure a maximum of 10 points from the final round of matches to lift the title for the first time since 2010 after their victory over holders Surrey last week, Nottinghamshire fulfilled their first requirement by taking all three bowling bonus points, led by Brett Hutton’s four for 46 and Mohammad Abbas’s three for 33.And Surrey’s failure to take any of the five batting bonus points potentially up for grabs in their match against Hampshire at Southampton, means they require just two more in this match to be certain of becoming champions.Put simply, if they can muster anything above 300 with the bat within 110 overs in their first innings, the title will be theirs even were they to lose this match and Surrey win theirs. They might have been on the field in pursuit of those runs already if Dan Mousley had not defied difficult batting conditions by scoring 74 after driving Warwickshire recovery from 127 for five.Mousley shared a 117-run sixth-wicket partnership with Ed Barnard, who exactly matched Will Young earlier in making 48 from 104 deliveries. Warwickshire, who began the day in fourth place, are keen at least to overtake Somerset and finish third. After choosing not to bat first, Nottinghamshire presumably would have hoped to send Warwickshire to lunch in a more precarious position than 70 for one. As it was, in an opening session limited to 25 overs after a wholly unforecast stoppage for rain, the visitors lost only Alex Davies, who was leg before to the 10th ball of the match as Hutton found some early movement through the air.Not that it was for want of trying by the Nottinghamshire attack. Abbas, returning from a minor back issue, bowled seven overs that on another day might have generated two or three wickets. Young and Rob Yates played and missed several times and edged other deliveries past the slips. Both executed some good shots, to be fair to them.More rain delayed the afternoon session by 50 minutes. It began with another early wicket, Yates well held at second slip by Freddie McCann in Abbas’s second over.Abbas has taken the place vacated by Josh Tongue, ordered to rest up by England after his match-winning performance against Surrey last week, which illustrates the depth of Nottinghamshire’s bowling resources. Their other centrally-contracted fast bowler, Olly Stone, though he missed the first tranche of matches through injury, will complete the season having not appeared in the Championship side.Though the sky cleared, batting remained a challenge, although patience and some nifty footwork appeared to be paying off for Young. Having saved himself on 35, managing to kick the ball away a delivery from Dillon Pennington squirmed under his bat towards the stumps, he was nearing a half-century against his former county. But then he unexpectedly wafted at a ball from Hutton outside off stump and paid the price. With Surrey already dismissed by Hampshire for just 147, a first bowling point for Nottinghamshire was enthusiastically applauded by the home crowd, fully aware that the requirement to take the title was already down to just four more points. Two more wickets before tea reduced Warwickshire to 127 for five. Sam Hain, pushing forward, and Zen Malik were caught behind in consecutive overs, the latter off a ball from Lyndon James that moved late to find the edge of his defensive bat.The middle session thus belonged to Nottinghamshire, yet Mousley and Barnard resisted and then fought back in the final session, Mousley becoming more confident and aggressive as the partnership grew, accelerating to a half-century from 62 balls, which he celebrated by going down the pitch to hit James back over his head for six.In the final half-hour, though, the pendulum swung back to Nottinghamshire, left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White claiming the second bowling point with a caught-and-bowled to remove Barnard before Abbas, bowling fast and straight with second new ball in hand, dismissed Michael Booth and Ethan Bamber in consecutive deliveries.Hutton wrapped things up by bowling Tazeem Ali before Mousley holed out to long off, leaving Nottinghamshire within touching distance of the prize.

USMNT star Christian Pulisic returns for AC Milan after almost month-long injury layoff in draw against Parma

USMNT star Christian Pulisic made his return for AC Milan, coming off the bench after an hour following three weeks out with a lower leg injury. The 27-year-old wasn’t fit enough to start under manager Max Allegri but contributed valuable minutes in the second half as Milan were held to a 2-2 draw by Parma after giving up a two-goal lead.

  • AFP

Working his way into the team

Pulisic had missed the last three weeks after being forced off with a lower leg injury in the USMNT’s friendly win over Australia. He was on the wrong end of a heavy tackle from behind and picked up a hamstring issue that ruled him out of action. He returned to Milan training this week, and Allegri confirmed Friday that he’d be available for limited minutes.

    A mixed cameo

Pulisic's impact was mixed. He entered the game with the score level and Milan hoping to regain the advantage after ceding a 2-0 lead to struggling Parma. He was presented with a glorious opportunity to score soon after when Rafa Leao sent him through on goal, but put his shot a yard wide. Still, he plugged away – and really should've had an assist. A quick pivot and timely pass gave Alexis Saelemaekers space and just the keeper to beat. However, the Belgian got his finish all wrong, and fired over after failing to round the goalie.

    Missing November action

His appearance comes shortly after U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino announced his squad for a duo of friendlies – which Pulisic was not named in. There was scattered talk that he might be able to recover in time to represent his country against Paraguay and Uruguay, yet Milan were eager to ease his recovery.

  • Recovery time

Pulisic will now have ample time to recover. The international break has put club soccer on hold, and leaves Milan without a game until Nov. 23. That will be a big one, though, when they will face city rivals Inter in an important Serie A clash. Milan are currently top of Serie A.

Rob Manfred Downplays Locker Room Confrontation With Phillies Star Bryce Harper

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Wrigley Field as the location for the 2027 MLB All-Star Game on Friday. Afterwards, he took a moment to speak with media and addressed reports of a confrontation he had with Bryce Harper in the Philadelphia Phillies locker room last weekend.

On Monday, ESPN reported Harper had cursed out Manfred when the commissioner visited the team's clubhouse and discussed the economics of MLB, with Harper snapping that Manfred should "get the f— out" if he wanted to discuss that in relation to a possible salary cap in the next CBA. The two reportedly shook hands afterwards but Harper refused to take Manfred's calls the following day.

On Friday Manfred was asked about the situation and downplayed it to the best of his ability, stating he doesn't discuss the locker room visits in detail.

"You know, I don't talk about those player meetings," Manfred said, per . "Let me say this: I think more has been made out of this than needs to be made out of it. Bryce expressed his views, at the end of the meeting we shook hands, and went our separate ways. Not all that significant."

A busy week for Manfred between this and an extremely active MLB trade deadline.
