Alongside Cresswell: West Ham seriously considering signing English star

West Ham United are now seriously considering a move for another “outstanding” English ace this month, alongside Toulouse’s Charlie Cresswell.

West Ham keen to strengthen in several key areas

West Ham’s first half of the campaign was nothing short of awful, and having collected just 14 points in 20 Premier League games, they are now four points adrift of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest, with relegation starting to become a major concern.

Consequently, the Hammers have set out to strengthen in a number of key positions this month, and two strikers have already arrived at the London Stadium, with deals for Tati Castellanos and Pablo Felipe being wrapped up.

The manager is certainly happy with the business done so far, saying: “I think we have done well in a transfer window that is very tricky to operate. Pablo was at the Wolves game, now we have Taty and we hope we can have more.”

With Max Kilman receiving heavy criticism in recent weeks, however, being described as “horrendous” by BBC commentator Sam Avery, Nuno is also looking to improve his options at the opposite end of the pitch, and Toulouse star Cresswell is on the shortlist.

The 23-year-old is keen on joining the Irons, which suggests a move could be possible, and another Englishman could be signed alongside the centre-back, with West Ham now seriously considering a move for Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states the Hammers are desperate to bring in new signings, given that they have a relegation battle on their hands, and Sterling is among the targets, although there could be competition from Premier League rivals Fulham.

The winger is willing to take his time before deciding on his next club, however, and the fact that he wants a permanent exit from Chelsea could be an obstacle, as Nuno’s side are only considering a loan move as things stand.

"Outstanding" Sterling needs to leave Chelsea this month

The 82-time England international is a part of Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad’, having failed to force his way into former manager Enzo Maresca’s plans, which means he is yet to make an appearance in any competition this season.

Having only turned 31 back in December, however, the forward could still have a good few years left before he needs to start thinking about retirement, which means he needs to leave the Blues this month for the good of his career.

Noble's a fan: West Ham now showing keen interest in "explosive midfielder"

The Hammers are looking to sign an “explosive midfielder”

ByDominic Lund

Should the Jamaica-born attacker be able to rediscover his previous form, he may have the quality to help propel West Ham to safety, having amassed 123 goals and 75 assists in 396 Premier League games, across what has been a fantastic career.

Lauded as “absolutely outstanding” by former Arsenal man Paul Merson during his time with Chelsea, Sterling has shown he is a top player on his day, so he should seek a move elsewhere this month, although that would likely mean accepting a cut to his astronomical £325k-a-week wages.

Man Utd now dreaming of signing £60m Ballon d’Or candidate

Manchester United are keen to establish themselves again in the European places and could now look to bring a goalscoring midfielder to Old Trafford.

Man Utd set their stall out for the January transfer window

Despite managing to get themselves over the line against Newcastle United, Manchester United’s midfield is threadbare amid injuries to Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

Jack Fletcher was once again entrusted to shore up the engine room amid a barrage of second-half attempts from Newcastle United, albeit January can’t come soon enough for the Red Devils, who could also deplete themselves further by selling Manuel Ugarte.

Becoming a maligned figure among the support, the Uruguay international may soon see his time at Old Trafford come to an end, meaning that new arrivals in the middle of the park become even more of a necessity for Amorim to pull off.

Nottingham Forest and England star Elliot Anderson is at the top of Manchester United’s list to bring some steel to the midfield picture. However, Atletico Madrid man Conor Gallagher has been earmarked as a possible signing if Ugarte leaves.

Casemiro’s minutes need to be managed amid injury concerns, while Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo’s involvement at the African Cup of Nations has also led to Amorim juggling his pack across other positions.

Truthfully, most Premier League clubs find themselves struggling for depth due to fitness issues and absences. However, the Red Devils have done a decent job of navigating a notoriously tricky part of the campaign.

Amorim will want to try and take his side to the next level, using January as a vehicle to do so, and may now be set to try and seal an ambitious deal involving a well-known name at Old Trafford.

Man Utd dreaming of Scott McTominay return

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United are dreaming of bringing Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford, and Napoli may be willing to sell the Scotland international should an extraordinary offer come to fruition from any interested suitors.

Valued at around £60 million, he is more likely to be sold in the summer after a return of five goals and four assists in 29 appearances this campaign.

McTominay was a candidate for the 2025 Ballon d’Or award and placed 18th when the ceremony took place after a stellar year for club and country, where he also played a leading role in Scotland reaching their first World Cup finals since 1998.

In light of his exploits, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Arsenal are also courting the 29-year-old, and Manchester United are now ready to enter the running as they regret offloading him to Napoli back in 2024.

Former United boss Jose Mourinho has been full of praise for the Scot’s rise at in Naples: “When I think of Scotland, I think of my boy, Scott McTominay.

“For me he’s one of the best midfielders in Europe. That kid is fantastic and I’m so proud of his career because I got him when he was 18 when nobody at Manchester United believed he could be the player he is.”

Priest ton sets up big New Zealand Women win

Opener Rachel Priest’s maiden century set up New Zealand’s 96-run win over Sri Lanka in the first Women’s ODI in Lincoln. Besides going 1-0 up in the five-match series, New Zealand have moved up to fourth on the ICC women’s championship points table.Asked to bat, New Zealand ran up a big score thanks to their top-three batsmen. After captain Suzie Bates (38) and Priest added 84 runs for the first wicket, Priest raised 131 runs in the company of Amy Satterthwaite, who made 69 off 72 balls. While there weren’t any major contributions after Priest and Satterthwaite departed in the space of three overs, the hosts made enough to stifle their opponents. Left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera cleaned up the lower order and finished with four wickets.Sri Lanka’s reply had a good beginning, as Chamari Atapattu put on 54 runs with Prasadini Weerakkody, but once Weerakkody was run out, wickets began to fall at regular intervals. Only Atapattu resisted for the visitors, but with little support from the other batsmen, the chase was never on. Offspinner Leigh Kasperek accounted for four wickets, including those of Atapattu and captain Shashikala Siriwardene.

Lanning, bowlers steer Australia to 1-0 lead

Meg Lanning’s 38-ball 43 and a disciplined performance from the Australia Women bowlers steered them to a comfortable 25-run win over Ireland Women in the first of the three T20Is in Dublin. After scoring 140 for 5, Australia reduced Ireland to 58 for 6, before the hosts hauled their score past 100 but the match had fallen out of their grasp by then.Opting to field, Ireland struck early with the wicket of in-form Jess Jonassen for 5 but Elyse Villani and Lanning stitched a crucial stand of 56 in 7.1 overs to lay a strong platform. Villani fell for 32 in the tenth over even as Lanning continued, to marshall the score past 100 in her 50th T20 international. Ireland fought back by taking three quick wickets of Lanning, Ellyse Perry and debutant Grace Harris, for a duck, within eight balls for only one run – two of those taken by 17-year-old legspinner Elena Tice. But Alex Blackwell and Jess Cameron smashed 36 runs off the last 23 balls to stage a comeback and post a competitive total. Tice finished with 2 for 35.Ireland went off track in their chase early when Perry and Jonassen removed the openers within the first three overs. Cecelia Joyce stalled the fall of wickets with a patient Laura Delany, 9 off 17, to take the score past 50, but medium-pacer Harris broke the stand by having Joyce stumped for a brisk 26. Fifty-one for 3 soon became 58 for 6 as Rene Farrell took a return catch, Harris struck again and a run-out added to Ireland’s woes. They needed another 83 from 52 from there, but with only four wickets in hand. Gaby Lewis, Kim Garth and Lucy O’Reilly chipped in with double-digit scores but could not avoid the loss as Australia inflicted two more run-outs. Harris made up for her two-ball duck with a spell of 3-0-15-2 and only one of Australia’s six bowlers conceded at more than six runs per over.”Nervous is probably an understatement,” Harris said of her debut. “I suppose because the nerves hit me early with the bat, by the time I got out to the field [to bowl], I was a bit fresher and over it. With the ball I just knew what my job was and went straight into it. I didn’t get hit for a boundary until the third over so I was just trying to bowl to the field the skipper had set me and Meg was happy with how I was going.”

Umpire Stanley Kuruppu dies aged 82

Sri Lanka have lost a long-standing umpire following the death of Stanley Kuruppu. Kuruppu, 82, father of former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Brendon Kuruppu, was renowned for his services to the umpiring fraternity in Sri Lanka. He was a pioneer in forming the umpires committee for the board in the mid-sixties.Kuruppu was a qualified Grade One umpire and officiated in division I club cricket and important school matches. He was also the vice-president of the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers Sri Lanka (ACUSL), who later became a life member for his services to umpiring. He did a lot to promote the game and popularise it. Kuruppu had thorough knowledge of the laws of the game and conducted many seminars on umpiring for the benefit of up and coming umpires. A government servant in the clerical grade, he also served as president of the Sri Lanka Softball Association. He was ailing for a long time and is survived by his second wife Dulcie and two children.

Gloucestershire notch fifth win

Division Two

Gloucestershire maintained their unbeaten record in the Pro40 this season with their fifth win on the trot over Derbyshire at Derby. Alex Gidman was the star for Gloucestershire with a brutal 84 from 60 balls, taking his side to an imposing 285 for 6, and he also took the key wicket of Travis Birt who made his highest score in the competition. His 84 came from 67 balls and it appeared he was taking Derbyshire to a win, but he received little support from his team-mates and Derbyshire fell short by 37 runs.

Smith delighted at leaving Somerset with a trophy

Smith: ‘I’ll get on that plane with a really good feeling’ © Getty Images

Somerset’s Twenty20 win secured them their first trophy since 2001 as they toppled Lancashire, the favourites from the start of the season until the start of the final, with a clinically attacking performance. Their seamers reduced Lancashire to 41 for 5 and then Graeme Smith led Somerset home with an unbeaten 64.Somerset’s triumph was more extraordinary given the situation they found themselves in during the semi-final against Leicestershire, with the defending champions requiring 80 from 12 overs before their batting imploded against some superb bowling and livewire fielding from Somerset. For Smith, named man of the match, the trophy was a perfect way for him to leave Somerset, as he heads back to South Africa to prepare for the next international season. “It means a lot. I’ve come in and I feel I have been part of building towards the future. It’s just fantastic to finish off and see the guys perform so well. This is my last day with the team so to walk away with a trophy is special and I’ll get on that plane with a really good feeling.”It’s been good for my game as well being here. From a batting point of view Twenty20 has really benefited my game. I’ve been able to hit the ball out of the ground, which is something I’ve not done before and I’ve found a new type of game working over here on some good wickets.”Smith felt the key to Somerset’s success in both the semi-final and final was their efforts in the field. “First game, getting 157, I though we’d cooked ourselves and then especially when they got to 75 for 0 and I knew we were struggling. But the key thing was the guys never gave up. In these conditions, in front of big crowds, with big pressure, some of these guys who aren’t used to those types of conditions can crack if you keep going at them and they gave it to us.”Then, with the ball upfront [in the final], Andy Caddick was brilliant. You can see he has been on the big stage for a lot of his life, he just looks forward to the occasion and he took two big wickets and it really made the difference. He was backed up by Richard Johnson and some superb fielding.”Mark Chilton, Lancashire captain, was philosophical in defeat, and admitted that it was the batting which fell short of its usual standard. “We never quite put enough runs on the board. We’ve been so strong in the competition all year round that it’s just a shame that we fell at the final hurdle.”Twenty20 is the type of game where you just don’t quite catch the ball right, but I felt the big turning point was Andrew Symonds’s run out. He has been in great form and if he had been able to a build a partnership for us for four or five overs we would have been quite well placed.”We watched the second semi-final as we hadn’t seen much of Somerset but obviously it didn’t do us much good.”

Butcher passed fit to play in opening Test

Simon Jones: back in the Test squad afer a foot injury© Getty Images

England today named their squad for the first Test against West Indies at Lord’s next week. Simon Jones returned after a foot injury, while Matthew Hoggard and Mark Butcher both kept their places despite being injury worries. Robert Key, whose last Test was against Zimbabwe last year, was also included as cover for Butcher.Jones’s foot injury forced him to miss the second and third Tests against New Zealand earlier this summer, but he, along with Matthew Hoggard, warmed up well in the recent MCC match against the West Indians at Arundel.Butcher was the only injury concern in the batting department after aggravating a thigh injury while playing for Surrey in the Twenty20 Cup. However, he has until Thursday to prove his fitness, with Key waiting in the wings if Butcher is forced to pull out. However, David Graveney, the chairman of selectors, was almost certain that Butcher would be fit to play: “We are confident he will be fit and available for selection, and the decision not to play him in Surrey’s Totesport League match is purely precautionary,” he said. “Key was included as cover only.”But one issue Graveney was not quite so sure on was whether Andrew Flintoff would be able to bowl. Flintoff was originally due to miss the recent NatWest Series due to a foot problem, but played in England’s last two matches as a batsman only – and scored two hundreds. “We will be closely monitoring Flintoff’s fitness in the run-up to Thursday,” Graveney said. “We feel that the more time he has to recover and receive treatment, the greater his chances of taking part in the game as an allrounder.”Meanwhile, Butcher said that with England on a winning streak, with six victories in their last seven matches, the side is a settled one. “The Test team virtually picks itself,” he said. “If you hit upon the right sort of formula, people’s roles become a lot more defined and you know what you are required to do. That all comes from developing a winning mentality, once you start winning, people trust in others to fulfil their jobs.”He also said that he expected to be fit in time to play in the first of the four-Test series: “I think the captain and coach would want me to be 100% by Tuesday night – but I am pretty confident I will be okay.”Meanwhile, Michael Vaughan, the captain, admitted his poor run of scores is something he needs to sort out. “You always have little peaks in your career where it goes well and troughs where it doesn’t go quite so well,” he told BBC Five Live. “I only average 33 as captain and that is a fact, but there is a time around the corner where these peaks will return again. It is not a major concern but it would be nice to get back to the fluency I know I can produce.”Squad
