Nat Sciver, Katherine Brunt strike devastating blow after Heather Knight sets up England win

Amy Satterthwaite’s 79 not out takes match deeper than hosts would have liked

Valkerie Baynes16-Sep-2021How to defend a sub-par total in Bristol, by Katherine Brunt and Nat Sciver – so England penned their victory tale against New Zealand in the first edition of their five-match ODI series. After the home side were bowled out for 241 with three balls left, the two England spearheads turned the plot on its head during a devastating spell at the start of New Zealand’s run-chase in which Brunt bowled four maidens on the trot and Sciver took 2 for 10 from five overs.Sophie Ecclestone added her own chapter by claiming two wickets in two balls, while Kate Cross also claimed two as Amy Satterthwaite offered valiant resistance with an unbeaten 79 that included a 78-run stand with Sophie Devine and took the match far deeper than England would have wanted.England’s innings had been built on an excellent 89 from captain Heather Knight, who was well supported by Tammy Beaumont’s 44 and Brunt’s 43. But with Lauren Winfield-Hill the only other England batter to reach double figures, the hosts would be left to wonder if they’d done enough. Their bowlers saw to it that they had.Brunt’s tight lines gave nothing to New Zealand’s openers, Suzie Bates and Lauren Down. After three overs, the tourists had managed just one run, a hurried single that would have resulted in a run out, had Beaumont’s diving throw from backward point not been a fraction wide. They’d only added one more when Sciver had Bates comfortably caught by Knight at first slip and, after five overs, New Zealand were 2 for 1, compared to England’s 30 for 1.Sciver struck again on the last ball of the Powerplay, luring an edge from Down which was taken by Amy Jones behind the stumps and New Zealand were 17 for 2 after 10 overs.Cross had Maddy Green caught at slip by Knight to make it 31 for 3 in the 13th over. But then Devine and Satterthwaite steadied the innings with a calm that seemed to mimic the twin hot-air balloons floating in the distance. They were by no means scoring freely, rather holding things together after a turbulent launch, however, and as those vessels drifted beyond the suburban skyline, so too did the victory target disappear out of sight – or so it seemed.Needing to score at a run a ball for the last half of the innings, Satterthwaite twice took a chance on the field with skyward shots that landed safely. She got one away nicely off Cross, back over the bowler’s head, but when Cross’s ever-reliable line and length was rewarded again with the wicket of Devine, caught at mid-on by Winfield-Hill for 34 three balls later, the tourists needed to rebuild again with the required rate creeping steadily higher.Ecclestone removed Katey Martin and Brooke Halliday with consecutive balls and it appeared just a matter of time for England to seal the win. Worryingly for England, it took time, especially given Knight’s edict before the match for her side to be more ruthless.Brunt’s return to action was delayed by a spell off the field to treat some tightness in her back but when she re-entered the the attack – with figures of 4-4-0-0 – New Zealand were six wickets down and still 118 runs adrift of their target.Brunt struck with the last ball of her second over back, trapping Hannah Rowe lbw to end with 1 for 22 from eight overs. Debutant Charlie Dean even chimed in with the wicket of Jess Kerr, bowled by a pearl of a delivery which took the top of off stump.Lea Tahuhu made a spirited 25 off just 14 in a late 34-run stand with Satterthwaite but was bowled by Freya Davies, and then Leigh Kasperek and Satterthwaite put on another 34 for the final wicket before Kasperek was brilliantly run out by Winfield-Hill in the middle of the 47th over.Kerr claimed three wickets for the White Ferns, while Tahuhu made an excellent return from foot surgery with two wickets and Devine also chimed in with two.The hosts plumped for Winfield-Hill despite adding Danni Wyatt – who had opened alongside Beaumont throughout the T20 series, which England won 2-1 – to the ODI squad.Winfield-Hill remains in search of the form that would see her cement a spot ahead of next year’s World Cup after she was strangled down the leg side by Rowe for 21 off 24 balls, ending a solid opening stand of 41.Beaumont was particularly strong on the drive, which delivered five of her six boundaries. There was little urgency to her innings but she looked solid after being dropped on 5 at the end of the third over when she sent a Devine delivery low to Green, who couldn’t hold on at first slip.Devine made the breakthrough, almost as an afterthought when she rapped Beaumont on the knee roll apparently in line but drew only a lone shout for lbw from the field. Devine made a last-second call for the DRS, which showed the ball striking the pad before the bat and going on to hit the top of leg stump.Tahuhu was instrumental in the England wobble which followed, bowling Sciver and Jones, and when Kerr had Sophia Dunkley caught cheaply down the leg side, England had gone from 109 for 1 to 140 for 5 and it fell to Knight and Brunt to drive the recovery. They did so with an 88-run stand which ended when Knight fell tamely on the penultimate ball of the 47th to a simple return catch for Kasperek.

Arsenal plotting £21m bid to replace Tomiyasu with elite club’s "diamond"

Arsenal could make a £21 million bid to replace defender Takehiro Tomiyasu with an elite club’s highly-rated player in January, as transfer chief Edu Gaspar and the Gunners recruitment team make a head start on next year already.

Arsenal's rumoured transfer targets for 2025

Mikel Arteta watched on as his side spent around £100 million on five key additions in goalkeeper David Raya, defender Riccardo Calafiori, midfielder Mikel Merino, Neto and Raheem Sterling this summer, but there is still work to be done on the squad.

Kai Havertz has seriously impressed in his centre-forward role, though it is still believed that Arsenal are looking at bringing in another striker to complement the German and Gabriel Jesus.

According to recent reports, Arsenal have already made contact over Benjamin Sesko ahead of a potential swoop in 2025, coming after the RB Leipzig striker rejected a move to north London this year in favour of remaining at his current club.

Considering the likes of Man United and Chelsea also contended for Sesko, Arsenal could face stiff competition to sign the Slovenian starlet, so Edu has alternative options in mind.

Indeed, Arsenal are the rumoured frontrunners to sign Jonathan David from Lille, with the Canada striker out of contract next summer and able to agree pre-contract moves as early as January.

Arteta also wants to strengthen defensively and on the left side, regardless of Calafiori’s arrival before summer deadline day. Arsenal are targeting Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich, according to some other reports, which could throw Jakub Kiwior’s long-term future into doubt.

The same can be said of Tomiyasu, who is yet to feature for Arsenal this campaign after injuring his knee in pre-season. The Japan international also missed 13 games with a calf injury last campaign, with his fitness record proving to be a cause for concern.

Arsenal could make £21m bid for Yann Bisseck to replace Tomiyasu

As per Inter Live, Arsenal would be willing to offer Tomiyasu to Inter Milan, but the Nerazzurri are not interested in taking the 25-year-old.

Instead, Edu would have to find a different buyer for Tomiyasu, and once they do, highly-regarded young Inter defender Yann Bisseck is a candidate to replace him.

Inter Milan defender Yann Bisseck

Inter Live claim that Arsenal could make a £21 million bid for Bisseck as early as January, with the centre-back only joining Simone Inzaghi’s side at the start of last season from Aarhus.

Bisseck made 21 appearances in all competitions for Inter last campaign, even managing to chip in with two goals and two assists in that time, and the 23-year-old German has been called a “diamond” by Serie A expert Nima Tavallaey Roodsari.

The Galaxy have traded a key piece of their MLS Cup winning side to Nashville, the team announced. Brugman, who served largely as a backup until the final game of the season, has been sent to the Eastern Conference club in return for Davis. Nashville will pay a portion of Davis' salary.

Brugman, 32, was in and out of the XI over the course of his Galaxy tenure. He made 12 starts last season, and tallied five assists in his third campaign with the club. He served largely as a reserve option behind Puig, who paced the Galaxy before missing the MLS Cup final with a torn ACL.

WHAT WILL KUNTZ SAID

Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz, in a statement, admitted it was a difficult decision to part with Brugman: "To maintain a championship-caliber roster in Major League Soccer, teams are often forced to make difficult contractual decisions, and today's trade is evidence of that. Gaston is a fierce competitor, an incredible teammate, and an even better person. He made countless contributions to the Galaxy on the field and in the locker room during his time with the club, and none was more important than his 2024 MLS Cup MVP performance earlier this month."

ECB Reporters' Network25-Apr-2021 Yorkshire 150 (Garton 3-25) and 305 (Ballance 74, Lyth 66, Carson 5-85) beat Sussex 221 (Haines 86, Patterson 4-26) and 186 (Bess 6-53) by 48 runsYorkshire took just 70 minutes to take the four remaining Sussex wickets and complete their second successive LV= Insurance County Championship win of the season at the 1st Central County Ground in Hove.England offspinner Dom Bess took the final wicket to finish with figures of 6 for 53 as Yorkshire won by 48 runs. They collected 19 points against Sussex’s four. It was always an unlikely run chase for Sussex but they – and in particular their captain Ben Brown – made a fight of it.”It was a fantastic win, particularly from where we were on the first day,” Andrew Gale, Yorkshire’s first team coach, said. “We didn’t do ourselves justice in the first innings but we showed great character and resilience after that. We won by a decent margin in the end and I’m really proud of them.Related

'I really did start hating cricket' – Bess on India struggles

“The batting is an issue at the moment but to still be winning games is very pleasing. But we have got to start to put big first-innings scores on the board.”Sussex started the fourth day on 136 for 6, requiring a further 99 runs for victory, with Brown unbeaten on 26 and new batter Ollie Robinson yet to face a ball following George Garton’s dismissal from the final delivery of the previous day.Yorkshire opened up with Steven Patterson from the Cromwell Road End and Bess from the Sea End, and with the second ball of the 59th over – the seventh of the morning – they broke through with the wicket of Robinson. The batter pushed forward to a delivery from Patterson which nipped back and caught him in front of his off stump. Robinson’s 17-ball stay had yielded just six runs.Yorkshire knew they were through to the Sussex tail but Brown and Jack Carson, the offspinner who impressed with a five-for in Yorkshire’s second innings, defied them with a stand of 35. Carson got a thick edge for four off Patterson and repeated the trick when the bowler was replaced by Jordan Thompson.Brown, meanwhile, provided the best stroke of the morning when he drove a full-length delivery from Thompson through the covers for four. But the intervention of England Test captain Joe Root with the ball ended the eighth-wicket stand just when Sussex hopes were beginning to rise again. Root replaced Bess and with his third delivery he made the second breakthrough of the morning as Carson edged to Adam Lyth at first slip for 18, leaving Sussex 180 for 8 and still 55 shy of victory.Sussex lost their ninth in the next over when Thompson plucked out Brown’s middle stump. The Sussex captain had batted for two hours and 21 minutes and faced 111 balls for his 46.And it was all over in the next over when Bess, who had just been hit over mid-on for four by Henry Crocombe, had the batter caught by the leaping David Willey at short midwicket.”It was disappointing to lose but we played some good cricket and came out of this game with a lot of pride,” Brown said. “We were up against a seriously good Yorkshire side with a number of international players and for our young team it was nip and tuck all the way.”Tom Haines looked good again and Jack Carson went toe to toe with the England offspinner Dom Bess. We could have got more runs in the first innings but a few things didn’t go our way.”

Rusyn starts & Browne dropped: Sunderland predicted lineup vs Cardiff

Sunderland supporters won't quite know what to expect from their side this Championship season as the Black Cats head into the great unknown with an unproven EFL manager at the helm.

Regis Le Bris was eventually appointed as the fresh face to lead the Wearside outfit after much deliberation from the powers that be at the Stadium of Light, hopeful that the ex-Lorient manager can be a rip-roaring success from the dug-out, and not another disappointment akin to Michael Beale.

Regis Le Bris for Lorient.

The expectant Sunderland masses will be hopeful that the new French manager can help their side regain their mojo and fight again for a playoff spot in the challenging division, having very much lost their way last season with a revolving door of managers, falling to a dire 16th place finish come the conclusion of the sobering 46-game schedule.

There has been some positive business that will excite even the most pessimistic set of supporters, with experienced Championship midfielder Alan Browne a shrewd capture from Preston North End, but a new potent striker still manages to elude the Black Cats.

Any apprehension about the campaign to come will soon be pushed to one side if Sunderland manage to collect an opening day win at the expense of Cardiff City however, as a lengthy trip to Wales now awaits.

Who will start the clash? We're predicting the following XI to take to the field…

1 GK – Anthony Patterson

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

Sunderland have added more depth to the goalkeeper spots this summer, with the arrival of ex-Brentford shot-stopper Simon Moore into the ranks, but Anthony Patterson will undoubtedly remain as the number one option even under the new regime of Le Bris.

The 24-year-old only missed one Championship clash all season long last time out and even helped himself to an admirable clean sheet return of 13, which will stand him in good stead to remain in between the sticks for the lengthy journey to Cardiff to start the new campaign.

2 RB – Trai Hume

Trai Hume

Likewise, Trai Hume's spot in the Black Cats first-team is similarly set in stone, with Sunderland fans just relieved that the Northern Irishman is still available for selection for the Bluebirds contest, rather than lining up for a new team.

The energetic full-back can actually one-up Patterson, having played every game possible to him last season in the second tier, and he has been present for all of the friendly matches under Le Bris leading up to competitive football starting again.

3 CB – Aji Alese

Aji Alese

It's less than ideal for the new Sunderland boss that both Dan Ballard and Jenson Seelt are out injured on the eve of a new season starting, but this will have been known to Le Bris for some time, hence Aji Alese's involvement in pre-season seeing him line up in a centre-back spot.

The former West Ham United defender will hope he can have a more positive campaign individually alongside his teammates, having only been fit enough to make eight second-tier appearances, starting with Cardiff away.

4 CB – Luke O'Nien

Luke O'Nien will aim to be a steady head again this season, particularly away at Cardiff, lining up next to his potential makeshift partner in Alese.

The gritty Black Cats number 13 was present for 43 games last campaign in the Championship as a mainstay of the starting XI, averaging 6.1 ball recoveries per clash.

Le Bris will want his troops to be energetic and brave from minute one against the Bluebirds, with O'Nien potentially setting the tone.

5 LB – Dennis Cirkin

The Black Cats were plagued with injury issues during their dire 23/24 showing, with Dennis Cirkin a regular fixture of the Stadium of Light treatment room, as the former Tottenham Hotspur youth player made just eight league appearances in total.

Cirkin will pray that he is now free of these constant setbacks, with his performances in pre-season presumably impressing Le Bris, with the attack-minded full-back firing home a strike in the 2-2 draw with Olympique de Marseille that closed out the pre-season run-outs.

6 RM – Patrick Roberts

Sunderland forward Patrick Roberts.

Roberts will be thankful that Ian Poveda isn't quite at the required match sharpness to usurp his spot in the Sunderland first-team just yet, meaning the former Celtic ace will more than likely start the opening clash of the season.

The experienced winger did manage to tee up Cirkin's goal against Marseille and will be eager to drastically improve on his numbers from last campaign in the second tier, with no goals registered whatsoever from the ex-Fulham youth player.

7 CM – Adil Aouchiche

Although Browne will have been purchased to start week in week out for his new employers, the former Lilywhites midfielder could find his central midfield spot is taken up by Adil Aouchiche for the trip to Wales.

Aouchiche only needed two minutes of action against Marseille to fire home, converting a penalty late on to help his Championship side draw 2-2, and he could well get the nod over Browne subsequently.

Moreover, Le Bris might well take a shining to the young French presence, having overseen his development partly when the pair were together at Lorient.

8 CM – Dan Neil

Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil.

There could well have been a very different reality at the Stadium of Light this summer, with a worry at one point that Dan Neil was reluctant to stay put in Wearside, owing to the ongoing no-manager saga.

Now, Neil will aim to have another positive personal season, that could help the Black Cats put together a promotion charge, with the Black Cats captain amassing four goals and five assists from 42 league games.

9 CM – Jobe Bellingham

Jobe Bellingham will equally want to push on and have an even more stellar campaign to come, having had his major breakout moment in the spotlight at Sunderland during the 23/24 season, by firing in seven strikes from 47 clashes.

The Black Cats might well not want their 18-year-old wonderkid to perform too well, however, owing to interest still being there from the likes of Serie A titans Lazio, but he looks certain of a starting spot against Cardiff.

10 LM – Jack Clarke

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke

Likewise, Sunderland will be anxious about their chances of keeping Jack Clarke beyond this August, but will still want Clarke to be at his tricky best rampaging forward down the left in the opening Championship contests.

Losing the ex-Tottenham Hotspur attacker would be a major blow, with the slick winger picking up 15 league goals to become his team's top scorer last season, but it could be a reality they'll have grow accustomed to very soon.

Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney hailed for 'transforming' Wrexham as Hollywood owners get surprise mention in House of Commons

Hollywood owners have had a massive impact on WrexhamMP Ranger hailed their contribution to the community A remarkable moment for Reynolds & McElhenneyFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

When Reynolds and McElhenney invested in Wrexham, few would have predicted the profound impact their ownership would have on the club. With a rich legacy as the third-oldest professional football club in the world, the Welsh club holds a special place in football history. However, before the Hollywood stars’ arrival, they had endured a 15-year absence from the English Football League. Now, with two consecutive promotions and a first league title in 45 years, the club is thriving once more in League One.

AdvertisementGetty/GOALTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Beyond the pitch, Reynolds and McElhenney have made meaningful strides in connecting with Wrexham’s people and culture. Just last week, the pair demonstrated their dedication to the area by purchasing Wrexham Lager, further embedding themselves within the community. Wrexham fans expressed immense satisfaction with the duo’s decision to support local businesses, highlighting how Reynolds and McElhenney’s involvement extends beyond the typical boundaries of club ownership.

WHAT RANGER SAID

Ranger acknowledged this community-focused approach in his speech, explaining that the Hollywood stars have truly taken Wrexham “to their hearts.”

"Of course, I could not talk about Wrexham and not mention football," he said.

"Wrexham is a team transformed, since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club a few years ago. The difference they have made to the club and to Wrexham in just a short time is remarkable—back in the Football League after a 15-year absence, our first league title in 45 years, and back-to-back promotions."

During his address, Ranger reflected on Wrexham’s storied history, humorously drawing a comparison to the Arsenal fans seated around him in Parliament. In his remarks, he alluded to Wrexham’s 1992 FA Cup triumph over then-first-division champions Arsenal, an iconic match that solidified the team’s status as “giant killers.”

"Much in the spotlight recently, the club has an illustrious history," he began. "I know that certain Members of the House are Arsenal supporters, and in Wrexham, we still take great pride in knocking out the then first division champions from the FA cup in 1992 and earning a reputation as giant killers."

West Ham enquire for £100k-p/w attacker who outscored Antonio last season

West Ham United may have found a new target in their hunt for a fresh face in attack this summer, it has been revealed.

Lopetegui takes charge

West Ham's summer has already been a busy one under new boss Julen Lopetegui. They have shelled out £30m to sign Luis Guilherme from Brazilian outfit Palmeiras, with the teenager penning a five year deal in East London.

The Hammers have also plundered Lopetegui's former side and Premier League rivals Wolves for club captain Max Kilman, who joined the club in a £40m deal and signed a seven year contract, a deal keeping him at West Ham until he turns 34.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be a West Ham United player,” said Kilman. “As soon as I was aware of the interest from the Club, it was an opportunity I was keen to pursue, so I couldn’t be more delighted to be here."

But their frontline still requires attention, and it looks as though that is Tim Steidten's next transfer mission.

West Ham want Premier League striker

Now, one report has claimed that West Ham are eyeing up a move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of the new Premier League season.

As per Football Insider, the Hammers have 'made an enquiry' about the Everton man, with the forward having been 'shortlisted' as a potential option to lead the line at the London Stadium next summer.

Though Everton don't want to sell the striker, he is down to the final 12 months of his £100,000 a week deal at Goodison Park and has "failed to agree terms on a new deal" so far. That may force Sean Dyche's side to cash in on their centre-forward, even though they have cooled their fears over PSR with the imminent sale of Amadou Onana.

And that has "alerted interested clubs" including West Ham and Newcastle United, though the Magpies ended their interest at the end of June.

Ex-Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira was full of praise for the Englishman during one appearance on Sky Sports back in 2023, dubbing him "one of the complete players" in the Premier League. And the striker showed signs of getting back to his best last season under Dyche after an injury plagued spell, finding the net seven times in the Premier League to steer the Toffees clear of relegation.

In the West Ham squad, only Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus managed more, with Tomas Soucek and James Ward-Prowse both grabbing seven goals. Meanwhile, veteran striker Michail Antonio only managed six in a disappointing campaign for the Jamaica international.

Should Lopetegui wish to implement a similar style to predecessor David Moyes at the London Stadium, Calvert-Lewin would be an astute addition given his ability to hold the ball up and bring the likes of Kudus and new signing Guilherme into the game from either flank.

While Palmer's chances of winning the Golden Ball this year are slim, Chelsea co-directors Stewart and Winstanley feel that the star player can go on and claim the prestigious award in the future. Speaking to The Telegraph, Winstanley said when asked if Palmer can be crowned the best player in the world one day: "No doubt he can, no doubt. He’s got a bit of maverick personality on the pitch, you can see that. You can see it in training, you can see it in the games. He’s got that ability."

Stewart added on how Chelsea signed Palmer: "We didn’t think necessarily that we’d be able to get him here really, did we? There was a feeling that ‘no, Cole Palmer won’t be for sale’. We’d been speaking about him throughout that window and then as it came towards the latter stage of the window, we felt like we wanted to do something else and do something around that area of the pitch. He came up again and we all said ‘let’s go for it, let’s see what’s possible’. And then there seemed to be a little bit of feedback that there could be something there."

Winstanley continued: "He showed great desire to come here and that’s the sort of player we want, the personality and the desire to come here.”
