West Ham love 43 y/o manager target who Allardyce called "incredible"

West Ham are apparently big fans of a new manager target who their former boss, Sam Allardyce, has hailed as "incredible".

Moyes heading for 2024 exit

Since re-joining the Hammers in late 2019, head coach David Moyes has done an absolutely fantastic job of guiding West Ham through their most successful period for a long, long time.

The east Londoners won their first piece of silverware since 1980, and first European trophy since the 60s, with a Conference League triumph in Prague last season. This came after Moyes lead West Ham to consecutive European qualification campaigns, and they're in a strong position to seal a Europa League knockout round place this season.

These scenarios were scarcely imagine when Moyes first joined, but that being said, West Ham's league form hasn't been brilliant over the last 12 months. They were battling relegation for much of 2022/2023, and reports suggest Moyes could leave West Ham in 2024 when his current contract expires.

West Ham identifying Moyes replacements

As relayed by 90min journalist Toby Cudworth on the Talking Transfers podcast earlier this month, West Ham are identifying future replacements for Moyes and doing their due-diligence.

“Our understanding is that West Ham have been looking at future replacements for him," said Cudworth (via West Ham Zone).

"He won the Conference League in June, has one year left on his contract, but there’s been no engagement over a new contract. Our understanding is that West Ham are in no hurry to replace him despite the indifferent Premier League results. David Sullivan doesn’t really see an available candidate who offers substantially more than David Moyes.

West Ham United manager David Moyes.

“One thing we can say with near-certainty, David Moyes is not going to be signing an extension at West Ham barring a miracle.”

It would appear that the Scotsman is likely to leave next year, with talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook sharing a possible candidate to succeed him.

West Ham really like Steve Cooper

According to Crook, who wrote an X update on Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper and his future at the City Ground, West Ham have a watchful eye over him. Indeed, West Ham are apparently real admirers of Cooper, with the 43-year-old under fresh pressure amid a poor recent run of form for Forest.

The Welshman guided his side to promotion from the Championship in 2022, with Forest later maintaining their top flight status by the skin of their teeth. Former West Ham boss Allardyce, commenting on Cooper earlier this year, heaped praise on the tactician for his "incredible" job dealing with certain issues at Forest.

Average term as coach: 2.08 years

Preferred formation: 3-4-2-1

Points per game: 1.71

Coaching license: UEFA professional license

"What becomes difficult in terms of building team spirit is having too many players. Most managers don’t have enough. What they don’t have enough of is quality, and what they don’t want is quantity," said Allardyce on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast (via Forest News).

“Steve is one of the only managers to say he has too many players. Dealing with that can distract your focus. You want to keep them all involved and use them if you can and see what they’ve got, but ultimately, it’s a very tough decision. Steve has done an incredible job dealing with these issues as well as getting good results.”

Digne finally rested in Aston Villa predicted lineup vs AZ Alkmaar

Aston Villa return to action in the UEFA Conference League this week, as Unai Emery’s side hope to push closer to confirming their progression into the next round.

In their first inclusion in European competition in 13 years, the Villans will be eager to get back to winning ways, after suffering their first Premier League defeat in six games against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

On Thursday, Villa welcome AZ Alkmaar to Villa Park, with the opposition destined to feel somewhat reluctant to attend the fixture after being dealt a 4-1 defeat at home to Emery’s side in the last round of games in Group E.

It’s a must-win game for the Midlands club, who currently sit second in the group table narrowly behind Legia Warsaw but level on points, with AZ and Zrinjski also level on points to split the group with all to play for.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

Despite the importance of the game, Emery is expected to make some changes with the Premier League clash with Fulham pending later in the week. Here’s the predicted lineup for their battle with AZ on Thursday…

1

GK – Emiliano Martinez

The recently crowned best goalkeeper of 2023, Emiliano Martinez, should start between the sticks for Villa on Thursday, despite second-choice keeper Robin Olsen getting the pick in the competition qualifiers earlier in the season.

Lauded by Emery as a shot-stopper that’s able to adapt to “each tactic we are trying to build”, the World Cup winner will almost certainly be the chosen number one against AZ.

2

RB – Matty Cash

Aston Villa defender Matty Cash.

Averaging 1.7 key passes per game in the Conference League this season, Matty Cash is one of Villa’s primary sources of creativity at right-back.

The Poland international is expected to get the mod over Calum Chambers on the right side of defence, as the Englishman continues to struggle to discover form.

3

CB – Diego Carlos

Brazilian defender Diego Carlos started the previous fixture against AZ in the Conference League, taking his appearance count to two in the tournament this term where he has averaged a stellar 7.5 ball recoveries per game.

After an injury-stricken start to life at Villa, the centre-back seems to be enjoying his football in the European journey, with his inclusion handing Emery the ability to rest his first-choice pairing of Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres.

4

CB – Clement Lenglet

Clement Lenglet

Despite not starting a Premier League game yet this season for Villa, Barcelona loanee Clement Lenglet could complete the rotation in central defence and partner Carlos.

The 28-year-old has appeared in the Villans’ last three games in the group stages, showcasing his commanding presence at the back with an average of 1.7 tackles per game and a tidy pass completion rate of 94%.

5

LB – Alex Moreno

Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno.

After an agonising start to the 2023/24 season, Alex Moreno could finally return to left-back as he heads towards making a full recovery from injury.

By having Moreno back in contention, Emery could hand Lucas Digne a well-earned rest after starting every game so far in both the Premier League and the Conference League proper this term.

6

CM – Douglas Luiz

Douglas Luiz celebrates for Aston Villa

One rotation that is not expected to be made, is the positioning of Douglas Luiz, who has been one of Villa’s most vital cogs in the squad so far this campaign.

It’s been a statement week for the 25-year-old after he received a call-up to the Brazilian national team and that could be capped off with a win against AZ on Thursday evening.

The midfielder has only started one game of the group stages so far, however has had to intervene to guide results to Villa’s favour, reinforcing his importance in maintaining the team’s structure in the engine room.

7

CM – Boubacar Kamara

With Luiz’s untouchable status comes his partner, Boubacar Kamara, who could be a notable difference-maker ahead of Thursday’s clash.

The Frenchman started in the previous battle against AZ, marshalling the midfield expertly with 71 touches, two tackles, one interception and a pass completion rate of 90%, via Sofascore.

8

CM – Youri Tielemans

Youri Tielemans in Astom Villa training

Youri Tielemans was also on the scoresheet at the AFAS Stadion, breaking his personal deadlock following his arrival at Villa Park in the summer from Leicester City.

The Belgian could get the nod over Moussa Diaby in this instance, allowing Emery to grant his star player a rest and hand the 26-year-old the minutes he so desperately desires.

9

RW – Leon Bailey

Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey.

Lauded as “sensational” earlier this season by journalist Josh Bunting, winger Leon Bailey could be handed another start against AZ after his heroics last time out against the Dutch side.

The Jamaican has had to battle for a place in the XI with Nicolo Zaniolo, whose underwhelming form of late could drive Bailey into his spot on Thursday.

In the 86 minutes he played against AZ in October, the 26-year-old scored, assisted and was a constant threat on the right flank for Villa to exploit to their advantage.

10

LW – John McGinn

Aston Villa captain John McGinn celebrates

Another top performer that AZ will be hoping not to see again is John McGinn, who displayed a real captain's performance in the previous group stage fixture.

Like Bailey, the Villa skipper scored and assisted against the Eredivisie side during the 4-1 victory, as well as making two tackles and two interceptions to impose his dominance in the middle channel.

Esclarecimentos e conversas.

PCB changes code to avoid appeals in Pakistan courts

Sharjeel Khan, currently banned from playing cricket by the board, is set to challenge the move with a writ petition later this month

Umar Farooq05-Dec-2017The PCB edited their anti-corruption code in an attempt to prevent players from appealing their punishments in Pakistani courts, even as a tribunal was sitting on a number of spot-fixing cases. The lawyer of Sharjeel Khan, who was banned from all cricket for five years earlier this year, will file a writ petition against what he considers to be the PCB’s male fide intentions.”During the proceedings [of Sharjeel Khan’s case], the PCB edited their anti-corruption code, which is obviously not in good faith,” Shaighan Ejaz, Sharjeel’s lawyer, said. “They had made a change in their code on 18 July 2017. Just a month and two days later, a verdict was announced and neither the tribunal nor the independent adjudicator was informed about it. This is questionable behaviour.”The relevant new clause – 7.5.4 of the PCB’s anti-corruption code – reads: “An appeal against the decision of the Independent Adjudicator shall lie exclusively before the CAS.” The CAS is the Court of Arbitration (Sports), based in Lausanne, Switzerland. The edited clause at the centre of the row effectively rules out Sharjeel’s ability to take his case to the Court of Appeals in Lausanne. “The parties may, if they so desire, file an appeal under Article 7, read with Article 7.4 of the PCB’s of the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Code for Participant, 2015, within 14 days of the receipt of the detailed decision, before the Court of Appeals in Lausanne, Switzerland, or an Independent Adjudicator in terms of the Constitution of the PCB.”Given that an independent adjudicator has already heard Sharjeel’s case, this clause would appear to rule out an appeal in Switzerland. And previously the clause did not make an appeal exclusive to the CAS.”The attempt they made is to oust the Pakistan judicial system and made sure that we will only be left with the option to go into the court of arbitration in Switzerland – which is obviously not feasible,” Ejaz said. “But I understand that you cannot rule out the jurisdiction of Pakistan’s courts and this will not happen. This is uncalled for. We will approach the high court soon; in fact, we will file a writ petition this month.”The PCB’s legal advisor Taffazul Rizvi told reporters that the modification was a routine change, and not one specifically designed to be applied to Sharjeel’s case. “In modern day sports, no code or regulation can remain stagnant,” he said. “Efforts to curb corrupt conduct in sports are updated regularly. Similarly, the PCB anti-corruption code also undergoes periodic reviews and amendments. Such amendments are never person-specific, and are applicable to all cricketers.”Pakistani courts have been involved in several PCB cases over the years, and haven’t been afraid to overturn board decisions on, to take one example, player bans and punishments.Sharjeel appeared for the first time in front of the media since his provisional suspension on February 10, continuing to proclaim his innocence. His ban, a suspended sentence, is effectively for two and a half years, meaning he cannot plot a return before the second half of 2019 at the earliest. He was representing Islamabad United at the PSL and was charged with five major breaches of the PCB’s anti-corruption code. He was found guilty on all five counts by a three-man tribunal.”My lawyer and I have fully cooperated throughout proceedings and I was expecting justice,” Sharjeel said, reading a prepared statement in Lahore. “But regretfully, at the end all I face is injustice. The PCB anti-corruption unit forcefully inducted me into a case which is beyond my understanding. Maybe there is another story hidden behind this which may be revealed with time. I swear to my nation and my fans that I am innocent.”If Sharjeel does not show public remorse and undergo the PCB’s rehabilitation program, he could end up serving the full five-year sentence.”Cricket is in my blood and it’s my passion and the punishment is severely painful for me and my family,” he said. “But what is more distressing is that I am being labelled a spot-fixer. So I have decided to clear my name and I will take this matter as far as possible.”The case against Sharjeel was centred on him playing pre-determined dot balls agreed with a bookmaker. According to Ijaz, that is merely based on assumptions, with the PCB failing to present any solid evidence.”During the entire process, we understood that the anti-corruption officials are not accountable,” Ijaz said. “They have all the discretion to do any kind of discrimination against any player and can trap any player and make any kind of case against anyone.”During the proceedings, PCB officials claimed Sharjeel had confessed to wrongdoing in Dubai and in Lahore on video. Sharjeel denies that is the case. “There were two interviews recorded, one in Dubai and the other in Lahore. On both occasions, I never confessed anything.”Ijaz said: “They had claimed that there was a lot of information from the ICC, and the PCB had prior knowledge of everything which was allegedly going to happen. This is an afterthought. If they knew anything, then there should be proof of it. Then why is that not presented at all? Where are they?”The most important thing is the statement by the PSL chairman (Najam Sethi). He said they had concrete evidence and a lot of things which a chairman should not have said. It seriously prejudiced proceedings and made the whole case a matter of ego, and Sharjeel’s exoneration would have proved personally embarrassing for Sethi.”
