John Simpson ends 16-year Middlesex affiliation to join Sussex

John Simpson, the veteran wicketkeeper, has agreed to join Sussex on a multi-year deal after being released by Middlesex.Simpson, 35, made 448 appearances for Middlesex after making his debut for the club in 2009, also winning three one-day caps for England.Although his contract had been extended to the end of 2024, Middlesex agreed to let him move on after an approach from Sussex.Sussex’s head coach, Paul Farbrace, spoke at the end of the 2023 campaign about the need to add experienced players to the squad at Hove, after they finished third in Division Two, and the arrival of Simpson will provide competition for the gloves with Oli Carter.”I’m absolutely delighted John has chosen to join us at a vital time in our challenge to compete and be successful on the field,” Farbrace said.”John will be a central point of our progression bringing huge experience, calmness, a high level of skill and leadership. We are all looking forward to John coming to Hove and being a big part of the exciting future.”Although Simpson came through the Lancashire age groups, it was in London that he won a chance at county level. He leaves Middlesex having scored 13,195 runs across formats, to go with 866 dismissals – the third-highest total in the club’s history.”I am excited to be joining Sussex at such an exciting time for the club and look forward to working with the coaches and talented players in the squad,” Simpson said. “After 16 happy seasons at Middlesex it was time for a fresh challenge and I can’t wait to get started at Hove.”Middlesex, who were relegated to Division Two on the final day of the season, were last month placed in special measures by the ECB after an investigation into the club’s financial mismanagement.Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s director of cricket, added: “It is always disappointing to lose players of John’s quality, however given our current circumstances, we were simply unable to match the long-term security that Sussex have been able to offer him over the coming few seasons. John will always be welcome back at Middlesex – the club will always be his home.”John has been an outstanding servant to Middlesex Cricket over the years and has given so much to the club over the last decade and a half. He leaves us on good terms, leaves behind many friends, and will always be remembered as one of the finest wicketkeepers to have played for Middlesex.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Porto arrived at the Club World Cup full of hope, but it quickly turned into a nightmare. They began with a 2-1 loss to Inter Miami, where Lionel Messi’s stunning free-kick sealed a historic win for the MLS side. The Portuguese club then played a thrilling 4-4 draw with Al Ahly, which wasn’t enough to send the team into the round of 16.

Back in Portugal, fan frustration has been steadily building after a disappointing first year under club president Villas-Boas. Porto finished fourth in the Primeira Liga, changed managers mid-season for the first time since 2015-16, and were eliminated from the Europa League in the playoff round.

Another early exit from international competition proved to be the breaking point for the fans, who hurled abuse and demanded the club president’s resignation.

    WHAT NEXT FOR FC PORTO?

After a disappointing season, Porto’s management will face some tough decisions in the coming weeks. The club is expected to pursue key signings to rebuild, but that won't be easy. Ongoing financial difficulties have already forced the departure of several key players in January, so a complete squad rebuild would be highly unlikely. With pressure mounting from supporters, this summer could prove pivotal for the future direction of the club.

Cunha replacement: Wolves considering move to sign £55m star for Pereira

Wolverhampton Wanderers moved a step closer to Premier League safety over the weekend, and now focus is slowly turning towards the summer as they are considering a move to sign a “deadly” star, according to a new report.

Wolves close in on Premier League safety

The arrival of Vitor Pereira hasn’t seen a massive upturn in results for the Midlands side, but it has seen them perform better than they did under Gary O’Neil, and they now look set for another season in England’s top flight.

New Cunha: Wolves now preparing £5m move to sign "excellent" goal machine

He’s one for the future…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 14, 2025

The 2-1 win over Southampton on Saturday leaves them nine points clear of third from bottom Ipswich Town, but despite the gap, Pereira states his Wolves side cannot feel safe and cannot go to sleep. “In this league, we cannot feel safe. The first mistake is to lose points. Now we have the [international] break, and it’s important to rest a bit, but the next match is very important for us. We must control our games because we cannot control the opponents’ games.

“They are out of our control. We need to do our work to do well for our supporters, who were fantastic again. We cannot sleep.”

But while Pereira claims the Old Gold still have work to do to confirm their safety in the Premier League, Wolves are already looking ahead to the summer transfer window.

Wolves considering move to sign £55m star for Pereira

According to TEAMtalk, Wolves are weighing up a move to bring former player Diogo Jota back to Molineux in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool striker Diogo Jota

Despite the Portugal international being considered a key player at Liverpool, the report states that he could be allowed to leave Anfield at the end of the season. His fitness record and question marks over his ability to affect big games have now led to suggestions that he could be on the move.

Liverpool are open to offers for Jota, who they value at £55 million, and that has led to Wolves keeping a close eye on his situation. The Wolves hierarchy are said to be evaluating the best way to bring Jota, who has been described as “deadly” by BBC analyst Raj Chohan, back to Molineux, as they believe they can convince him to return, although a £55m fee would be a club record for the Old Gold.

Wolves could ideally like to bring Jota back to the club to form a partnership with talisman Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian signed a new contract at Molineux recently, and while they look set for another season in the Premier League, he is a player who has several admirers. A move away in the summer still looks a real possibility for Cunha, as Arsenal are very much keen on signing him, and incoming sporting director Andrea Berta is now planning to tempt Cunha with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Therefore, signing Jota could be seen as a replacement for Cunha if he were to depart in the summer. Cunha has a £62.5 million release clause, so if that is triggered, Wolves could use that money to then try and tempt Jota into a return to the club.

Ella McCaughan takes chance as depleted Vipers edge Thunder

Ella McCaughan capitalised on Southern Vipers’ England exodus to score 42 to help her side to a four-wicket victory over Thunder in the Charlotte Edwards Cup.Batter McCaughan hadn’t featured in Vipers’ opening three matches but made the most of Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt’s England call-ups with five boundaries on her way to her highest T20 score for Vipers.Vipers’ chase of 111 – after a good bowling performance led by Linsey Smith’s 2 for 16 – never looked in much doubt, with Georgia Adams joining McCaughan in a 52-run stand in front of almost 3,500 fans.”It was nice to get an opportunity at the top of the order,” McCaughan said. “I’ve been working hard behind the scenes to be ready for the chance and I’m really pleased with the way I contributed.”We have a strong side and depth here so it is really hard to get into the team. I’ve been working hard to get in and it was nice to get out there today.”The bonus-point victory put Vipers in command of third place after their defeat of The Blaze, while Thunder remain fourth.Thunder chose to bat first with both sides shorn of their England contract players, with Lauren Bell, Wyatt, Charlie Dean, Bouchier, Kate Cross, Sophie Ecclestone, and Emma Lamb all called up for red-ball training ahead of the Ashes Test.Thunder’s batters collectively struggled to make the most of starts, with Liberty Heap, Deandra Dottin, Ellie Threlkeld and Danni Collins all scoring between 15 and 24 but none could turn them into innings-defining scores. They were throttled by accurate bowling from the experienced Vipers bowlers Anya Shrubsole, Smith, Adams and, on her birthday, Georgia Elwiss – none of which went for more than 6.25 runs per over. But Thunder self-sabotaged with four run-outs of varying degrees of barbecuing and mix-ups, which accounted for the wickets of Fi Morris, Seren Smale, Steph Butler and Olivia Bell.A used pitch made flowing shot-making difficult although they totted up 47 for 2 in the powerplay, aided by Heap’s quartet of boundaries.West Indian Dottin showed some flair with a vicious cut and flail over cover combo off Mary Taylor before slog-sweeping Adams for six.But the belt tightened, Elwiss went for 14 off her for overs while Shrubsole, Smith and Adams picked up two wickets each as the last seven wickets fell for just 30 runs.In reply, Vipers’ new-look opening pair of Nicole Faltum and McCaughan effortlessly put on 33 together before the Australian cut to point and Taylor joined the run out party.Left-arm all-rounder Naomi Dattani had pilfered the first wicket, and the first two overs with impeccable figures of 2-2-0-1.But Adams and McCaughan took control. Adams started slowly with 15 coming from her first 17 balls before tearing into former team-mate Tara Norris with three successive fours before bring up the fifty stand by carting Bell into the stands. She departed two balls later attempting another big shot before Freya Kemp and McCaughan were bowled by Bell.Nancy Harman became the sixth run out victim but Elwiss whacked a six back over Bell’s head to win it with 23 balls to spare.

99th percentile for assists: Aston Villa now in talks to sign £13m maestro

Aston Villa are now in active talks over a summer move for a midfielder who has “star quality”, and he could be available for a fee of just £13m, according to a report.

Villa eyeing additions in all areas this summer

Villa have set their sights on a number of players ahead of the summer, with Unai Emery keen to strengthen multiple areas of his squad, and a report has revealed they could be set to reignite their interest in Real Sociedad right-back Jon Aramburu.

After Jhon Duran’s January departure to Al-Nassr, the Villans may also be required to bring in a new striker this summer, and they are said to hold a concrete interest in Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic, although they are yet to make a formal approach.

Emery bolstered his midfield options by bringing in Marco Asensio during the January transfer window, and former CEO Keith Wyness recently admitted he expects his old club to pursue a permanent deal for the Spaniard at the end of the season.

ByBarney Lane Mar 10, 2025

There has now been a new update on Aston Villa’s pursuit of Asensio from GiveMeSport, with journalist Ben Jacobs revealing they are now in active talks with Paris Saint-Germain over the possibility of a summer move.

The current loan agreement does not include an option for Villa to make the midfielder’s stay permanent, but Emery is keen to get a deal done, having been the driving force behind the initial loan move.

The 29-year-old is said to be open to a move to Villa Park, given that he is not part of PSG’s long-term plans, and the French club are prepared to sanction his departure for a low fee, with €15m (£13m) deemed to be an acceptable amount.

Asensio has the "star quality" to be a top signing

The PSG loanee has made quite the impact since arriving at Villa Park, having already scored five goals in all competitions, and he received high praise from Sky Sports’ Dan Bardell after bagging a brace against Cardiff in the FA Cup.

Not only has the former Real Madrid man displayed a keen eye for goal, but he also ranks very highly on a number of other key metrics over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

Alyssa Healy injures her calf in the fourth T20I against India

The Australian captain won’t take any further part in the game, with a word on her availability for Tuesday’s T20I still expected

S Sudarshanan17-Dec-2022Australia captain Alyssa Healy suffered a calf strain while batting in the fourth women’s T20I against India and was ruled out of the contest. A word on her availability for the final game of the tour was awaited.Healy, leading for the first time in place of Meg Lanning, who is on an indefinite break, helped Australia get off to a quick start after they were asked to bat. She raced to 30 off 21 balls, hitting six fours in the process. On the penultimate ball of the powerplay, she moved well across to the off side and pulled Deepti Sharma to the square leg fence. That is when she appeared to have tweaked her calf.Healy was seen hobbling and, after some attention from the physio, decided to carry on. However, a ball later, she was unable to pinch a quick run, which is when she decided to walk off. Not long after that, she was ruled out from further participation in the game. After the series against India, Healy was due to play the Women’s National Cricket League, the domestic 50-overs competition in Australia. From January 16, Australia are scheduled to take on Pakistan at home for a six-match white-ball series starting with the three ODIs, which are part of the ICC Women’s Championship cycle. In Healy’s absence, Tahlia McGrath, the designated vice-captain in Mumbai, will take over the side. Beth Mooney is the back-up wicketkeeper. She has donned the gloves regularly in the Women’s Big Bash League – first for Brisbane Heat and then for Perth Scorchers.Should Healy be ruled out of the fifth T20I, Phoebe Litchfield could be an option to open the batting, having done so for Sydney Thunder in the WBBL. Healy is the second Australian player to suffer an injury on the tour, after Jess Jonassen was ruled out with hamstring problems last Sunday.

Rain, hail and Dean deny Tasmania on the final day

Opener Travis Dean made 70 not out as Victoria batted for a draw against Tasmania after heavy rain and hail washed away large parts of the final day in Hobart

AAP01-Nov-2022Two Hobart hailstorms and firm resistance from Victoria’s top order have combined to deny Tasmania back-to-back Sheffield Shield wins. After resuming at 44 for 1 on the final day and still needing another 140 to make Tasmania bat again, Victoria made clear their plan to bat through the day at Blundstone Arena. But they needed to face just 45.5 overs, as heavy rain and hail stopped play early in the middle session with Victoria 113 for 1.The rain eventually subsided as an early tea was called, but 12 minutes after the players returned more heavy hail hit with Victoria 122 for 1. The teams agreed to a draw.Opener Travis Dean offered the most resistance for Victoria, soaking up 200 balls for his 70 not out.His innings included a 50-over stand that netted 80 runs with Mitchell Perry, who was unbeaten on 31 from 159 balls.Victoria were in the box seat after the opening two days thanks to an unbeaten century from debutant Ashley Chandrasinghe that allowed them to declare at 7-351.But Jordan Silk’s quickfire 154 from 161 balls helped Tasmania take a mammoth 184-run first-innings lead. That gave the Tigers a shot at a second straight win after toppling South Australia a fortnight ago, but any hopes of a win were quickly extinguished on Tuesday. The result marks Victoria’s third straight draw to start the season after they were denied by Western Australia and South Australia in the opening rounds.
