Brisbane Heat have signed South Africa allrounders Nadine de Klerk and Anneke Bosch for the WBBL.de Klerk will be returning for her second season with Heat after playing nine matches in last year’s campaign. For Bosch it will be her first experience at the WBBL and follows her promising return to the South Africa side earlier this year.Bosch was recalled against Pakistan in February before being part of the tour of India where she struck maiden half-centuries in both the ODIs and T20Is. Runs continued to come as part of South Africa’s Emerging Players team against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe which included a century in Bulawayo.”We were really impressed with Nadine and how she adapted and improved across the tournament, which was played in some pretty challenging conditions due to the strict bio-security regime we all had to follow,” head coach Ashley Noffke said.”She’s ultra-competitive and give us another player who likes to get in and get the job done. She bowled well last season and did some unselfish work with the bat when it was needed.””Anneke impressed us with her composure as well as her ability. In all our dealings with her, and the scouting we did before signing her, her strengths are that she is a talented individual who also works hard to enhance the other players around her.””With Delissa Kimmince retiring, it will be great to have another experienced player in the group who can contribute on and off the field for the club.”Heat’s captain Jess Jonassen is currently sidelined by a stress fracture in her tibia which has ruled her out of the multi-format series against India. The WBBL is due to start on October 14 in Sydney, three days the India series finishes, although the schedule is likely to change due to Covid-19 lockdowns.Current Brisbane Heat squad Jess Jonassen (capt), Anneke Bosch, Nadine de Klerk, Grace Harris, Laura Kimmince, Mikayla Hinkley, Charli Knott, Georgia Prestwidge, Georgia Redmayne, Georgia Voll

'It's every coach's dream' – Pep Guardiola tipped for sensational Real Madrid move amid mounting speculation over his position at Man City

Pep Guardiola has been tipped for a sensational move to Real Madrid amid mounting speculation over his position at Manchester City.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Guardiola’s tenure at Manchester City has been marked by unprecedented success. The 52-year-old has steered the club to six Premier League titles and the Champions League since moving to Etihad Stadium in 2016. Yet, despite these accomplishments, there has been growing pressure on the manager amid a crisis that has seen City win just once in the last 12 matches, with their latest defeat coming against Aston Villa last Saturday.

    WHAT DIDI HAMANN SAID

Former Liverpool and Man City midfielder Didi Hamann has weighed in on Guardiola's situation while speaking to about Premier League Betting. Guardiola has said a national team role will appeal if he ever leaves City, but Hamann has suggested he could one day take over at Real Madrid, despite his past ties to Barcelona.

"Pep has won everything in club football, but the one club he hasn’t managed is Real Madrid and for every coach, that is a huge thing," he said. "He is a Barcelona man, though, and I’m not sure he’d want that and he’s from Catalonia – though to be fair it's every coach's dream to manage them. With the national team, he hasn’t got that daily interaction which he clearly loves and you only get players for ten days a month. However, I do think the national team is most likely. If he says he won’t manage another team, then it makes sense, as it’s a stressful job being a Premier League boss."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is not the first time Guardiola has been linked with Real Madrid, and he has been quick to dismiss such speculation in the past. Marti Perarnau, Guardiola’s autobiographer, revealed in 2016 that Real Madrid once approached Guardiola while Rafa Benitez was still their manager. However, Guardiola laughed off the suggestion, saying: “I’m a follower of FC Barcelona. I don’t think Real Madrid would need a coach like me, and I wouldn't fit there either."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER CITY?

While speculation about Guardiola’s future continues – despite the fact he signed a two-year extension at the club in November – City will turn their attention to the final games of 2024. With matches against Everton on Boxing Day and Leicester City on December 29, the reigning Premier League champions have a chance to stabilize their form and end the year on a high note.

New Zealand take aim at depleted England on Lord's return

Williamson’s men look to improve patchy away record in the lead-up to WTC final

Matt Roller01-Jun-2021Big pictureTwenty-three months on from a day of agony and ecstasy, New Zealand are back at Lord’s. Nine of their 19-man squad, seven of whom played in that final, are returning to the scene of their World Cup near-miss, and just in case they needed reminding of the granular detail, they arrived at the Ageas Bowl’s hotel for their training camp last month and found Sky Sports’ cricket channel showing a rerun of the final. The circumstances this week are very different: New Zealand are only building up to the main event, the inaugural World Test Championship final against India, which starts on June 18, while Joe Root is likely to be England’s lone representative of the 50-over squad from 2019, in the absence of their IPL returnees and the injured Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. Even still, with fans returning to an England home international for the first time since the end of that summer, Super Over is unlikely to go unmentioned.Related

Explainer: Why are England, NZ playing a Test series now?

'It happens when you don't expect it' – Bracey

Stead excited by NZ's depth

Top-order batter to 'something special' fast bowler – the Kyle Jamieson story

Taylor banks on county experience to counter England bowlers

The series itself is something of an anomaly: it is not part of the Future Tours Programme or the WTC, and has been bolted onto the front of a jammed schedule for England that includes Sri Lanka and Pakistan’s limited-overs tours and the mid-summer headliner: a five-Test series against India. With their multi-format players rested following 10 days of post-IPL hotel quarantine, England have admitted they are using this as a chance to “look at new faces” – including two potential debutants this week in Gloucestershire wicketkeeper-batter James Bracey (whose inclusion was confirmed by Root on Thursday) and Ollie Robinson, the tall Sussex seamer. This is Chris Silverwood’s first series since becoming selector on top of his head coach role, and while there was little intrigue in the squad he named – he was spared any tough decisions by the number of absentees – there is a tricky balancing act to be struck between focusing on the series itself and giving opportunities to players he feels will be important this winter: England’s fixation with the 2021-22 Ashes seems to be as strong as ever, and as such, it is not completely guaranteed that James Anderson and Stuart Broad will play together in both Tests. Even in the absence of Archer, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran, England’s bowling attack is close to full-strength, but their batting is comparatively raw: Rory Burns, with 23 caps, is the second-most experienced member of the top seven behind Root, who needs more support from the rest of the side than he got in Sri Lanka and India earlier this year. While New Zealand’s primary focus will be to ensure they have a fit, in-form squad to pick from in two weeks’ time, there is also an opportunity to win in England for the first time this century. The gunslinging series in 2015 finished in a 1-1 draw despite large periods of dominance, and their away record in Tests has been patchy in the last five years, with one series win (against Pakistan in the UAE) in their last five tours. But this side has proven time and again that they should not be underestimated. Their seamers were the key to their success in the WTC, and they have the depth to cope with Trent Boult’s absence in this series, with Tim Southee and Neil Wagner leading the attack. Their batting core is settled and consistent, and while Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls and the retiring BJ Watling have been unsung stars, it is Kane Williamson who will be the prized scalp.Williamson’s Test record in England – an average of 30.87 across eight innings – jars with his dominance elsewhere and his composure against the moving ball. He comes into the series on the back of three hundreds (including two doubles) in his four Test knocks in New Zealand’s home summer. If he can lead New Zealand to a rare away win and then the WTC trophy, this will be a legacy-defining month. After a tough tour to India, Ollie Pope will be hoping to deliver big at home•Getty ImagesForm guideEngland: LLLWW
New Zealand: WWWWWIn the spotlightIn the absence of Stokes and Jos Buttler, Ollie Pope is the most experienced player in England’s engine room from Nos. 5-8, his 17 caps making him a relative veteran. He has started the season well, with 245 and 131 against Leicestershire and Hampshire respectively, but had his technique dissected by Sky’s pundits during the televised fixture against Middlesex, in particular his off-stump guard. Pope’s logic is that it allows him to leave anything outside off and score heavily off his pads, but it does leave him vulnerable to the nip-backer, especially early on. With his Test average hovering just above 30 after a tough tour to India, England need him to start delivering on his immense potential.Test cricket is an easy game if your name is Kyle Jamieson. His record so far is six caps, six wins, 36 wickets and an average of 13.27, but this is set to be his first appearance outside of New Zealand, and England will have watched hours of footage from his career to date to work out how to go about playing him. Pitches at Lord’s are rarely particularly springy, but at 6ft 8in, he is unlikely to have too many problems finding bounce. His immaculate control of line is one of his biggest assets, which will be tested by the ground’s famous slope and the novelty of the Dukes ball. In Boult’s absence, he may open the bowling for the first time in his career.Team newsThe lack of a genuine allrounder in the squad means that England’s top seven effectively picks itself, with Haseeb Hameed and Sam Billings mainly with the squad as cover, while Robinson looks likely to get the nod ahead of Craig Overton at No. 8. Jack Leach’s success in the holding role for Somerset at Lord’s earlier this summer and the upturn in the weather means Root will probably resist the option of an all-seam attack, though he left open the possibility on Thursday, admitting he had “gained a little bit more confidence in myself” as a spin option on the back of the India tour. It is possible that either Olly Stone or Mark Wood could play ahead of Leach to offer extra pace, or instead of Robinson if England are willing to risk a particularly long tail. Root himself took a blow on his hand in the nets on Monday, but has confirmed he is fully fit.England (possible): 1 Rory Burns, 2 Dom Sibley, 3 Zak Crawley, 4 Joe Root (capt), 5 Ollie Pope, 6 Dan Lawrence, 7 James Bracey (wk), 8 Ollie Robinson, 9 Jack Leach, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James AndersonWilliamson confirmed late on match eve that the in-form Devon Conway would make his Test debut, having been preferred over Tom Blundell or Will Young to open the batting alongside Tom Latham. Colin de Grandhomme is fit again and was an integral part of the rise to No. 1 in the ICC’s rankings but Daryl Mitchell performs a similar role and made a hundred in his last Test; and Mitchell Santner is likely to play as a second allrounder – unless the cut to his spinning finger or a green tinge to the surface means that they opt for a four-man seam attack.New Zealand (possible): 1 Tom Latham, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Henry Nicholls, 6 BJ Watling (wk), 7 Colin de Grandhomme/Daryl Mitchell, 8 Mitchell Santner/Matt Henry, 9 Kyle Jamieson, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Neil WagnerKane Williamson tunes up for the Lord’s Test•AFP via Getty ImagesPitch and conditionsAfter a grim, mizzly May, the sun has been shining in London this week and will continue to do so, with highs of 27°C on the first day in St John’s Wood and only limited cloud cover throughout the Test. Lord’s has not hosted a Test since August 2019, when the second Ashes Test finished in a rain-interrupted draw, and as such the pitch is something of an unknown. There was a slight green tinge to the pitch on Tuesday morning, though Stead said that the grass was cut shorter than New Zealand are used to. Wickets have been more frequent at Lord’s than any other ground in the country in this season’s County Championship, though that owes as much to Middlesex’s flaky batting as anything else.Stats and trivia James Anderson will equal Alastair Cook’s record for England Test caps, if he plays. He is eight wickets away from 1,000 in his first-class career. James Bracey will become the first Gloucestershire player to make a Test debut for England since Jon Lewis (now England’s seam-bowling coach) in 2006. This is England’s first home game in front of fans since the fifth Ashes Test in 2019. Lord’s will host crowds of up to 25% capacity (around 7,500). Kane Williamson needs 58 runs to go past Stephen Fleming’s aggregate in Tests and become New Zealand’s second-highest run-scorer of all time, behind Ross Taylor. New Zealand have lost nine of their last 12 away (or neutral) Tests, dating back to August 2016. Phil Neale, England’s long-serving operating manager until his retirement last October, is working as New Zealand’s team liaison officer in this series, while Jeetan Patel, who won 24 Test caps for New Zealand, is England’s spin-bowling coach.Quotes”I’m not massively used to batting down the order but I’m confident I’ll jump into that. When it comes to batting, I like to be gritty and get into a battle. I’m not afraid to put in those hard yards and go through tough spells.”
“It was emotional to a certain extent to think back about being involved in that match and some of the controversies that surrounded it and the drama and all these sorts of things that come with tournament cricket and some of the fine margins. The guys are really excited to be back here: it is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to play at Lord’s”

Leeds now go back for attacker who’s "such a threat" after £40m Rutter sale

Leeds are reportedly now making a move for an attacker who's been called "such a threat" with his pace, as Elland Road transfer chiefs scour the market for options after losing Georginio Rutter to Brighton.

Farke admits Leeds need to sign two new attackers

Following Rutter's £40 million move to the Amex, which happened due to the Seagulls triggering his release clause, manager Daniel Farke has candidly admitted to the press that his side quite simply need to bring in multiple new attackers.

Leeds now hold concrete interest in signing "fantastic" new promotion rival

The Whites are still looking for attacking reinforcements.

As well as losing Rutter to the Premier League, Farke has also been left wondering who can replace the goalscoring threat left by Crysencio Summerville, who joined West Ham in a deal worth upwards of £25 million around a fortnight ago.

“I stick to what I said. We need cover at full-back, a midfielder, a winger or offensive player and after Georgi a second offensive player," said Farke on Leeds' need for new signings before August 30.

“They need the full package in all areas. You are not a top player unless you deliver goals and assists. They have to fit personality and mentality and be affordable. Not easy to attract this quality. Easier in the PL. This is what we work on.

“I know our key people are working hard behind the scenes. I know when there are no incoming there is stress, but I talk to them every day and they know what I want. I am carefully optimistic something will happen.”

A few names have been linked with moves to Yorkshire, both in the wake of Rutter's exit and beforehand. Leeds still hold a keen interest in Norwich City star Jonathan Rowe, who is viewed as a "priority" target for the Championship side.

"Leeds United would still like Jonathan Rowe," said journalist Ben Jacobs to GiveMeSport this week. "He's a priority name. We know it's Marseille that have been the club bidding, but Leeds could enter that race because Marseille haven't agreed a deal.

"Norwich want in excess of £10million and maybe with add-ons now even closer to £15million, and it might be that a [Georginio] Rutter departure allows Leeds to make a competitive bid, so that could be one to watch."

As well as Rowe, Leeds are targeting Stoke City's Million Manehof, but it is unclear whether the Potters would sell after only just bringing him in earlier this year.

Leeds going back in for Rangers forward Rabbi Matondo

Farke's side have been linked with another option, Rangers forward and Wales international Rabbi Matondo, but reports during the week suggested their interest had cooled and they would not be signing the Ibrox talent.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

The 23-year-old, who registered 10 goals contributions in all competitions under Philippe Clement last term, has been praised by Robert Page for being "such a threat with his pace", and it seems this saga has taken another u-turn as the Whites are now set to go back in for the winger.

As per Football Insider, Leeds are making a move for Matondo this summer and Rangers are open to doing business with them, but is unclear just how much the Glasgow giants will demand for their winger or if Leeds' interest will actually stick this time.

Michael Bracewell tests positive for Covid, faces five-day isolation period

Michael Bracewell, the New Zealand allrounder, and two members of the support staff* have tested positive for Covid, and are undergoing five days of isolation ahead of next week’s third LV= Insurance Test against England at Headingley.Bracewell undertook a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) after waking up with symptoms in Nottingham, on the morning after England’s thrilling five-wicket victory in the second Test at Trent Bridge. The rest of the touring party underwent another round of tests on Wednesday, with team physio Vijay Vallabh and strength and conditioning coach Chris Donaldson also testing positive on arrival in London. No others members of the tour party tested positive at this stage and, with eight days until the start of the Headingley Test, no replacement player is being called up at this stage. The news came as Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s captain, rejoined the tour party after serving his own five-day period of isolation, having test positive on the eve of the same match.Williamson’s positive test was a key reason why Bracewell was chosen to make his Test debut at Trent Bridge, and he impressed with both bat and ball in the course of the contest, making scores of 49 and 25 in his two innings, as well as three first-innings wickets with his offspin.*1800 BST – This story was updated with news of Vallabh and Donaldson testing positive

'They always look to get better' – Gary Stead reflects on New Zealand's 'special achievement'

“That’s the most encouraging and pleasing thing that we are managing to do that on a daily basis”

Deivarayan Muthu08-Jan-2021With his New Zealand side seeing off Pakistan inside four days in Christchurch, Gary Stead could skip away from coaching to watch his daughter Libby play for Canterbury in the women’s Under-19 tournament in Lincoln. On the sidelines of that game, Stead reflected on New Zealand’s rise to the No.1 Test ranking, terming it a “special achievement.””I think what has happened, that sort of No.1 world ranking at the moment, is a pretty special thing,” Stead said. “There’s a lot of people and a lot of, I guess, expertise. The guys yesterday paid tribute to those people who came before to get them to this stage.”I’m very, very proud in the way they continue to look to get better and we won’t always be No. 1 because rankings change, and when you start a game rankings mean nothing, so it’s still about playing good consistent cricket. That’s the most encouraging and pleasing thing that we are managing to do that on a daily basis”Related

NZ's longest winning streak, Jamieson's dream start

Along the way, there have been murmurs that New Zealand’s climb to the top spot came with a caveat: they were swept 3-0 on their last trip to Australia in 2019-20 and they haven’t visited India since they were blanked 3-0 in 2016-17. Australia and India are the other contenders for the WTC final at Lord’s in June later this year. When asked how New Zealand dealt with the talk of being home-track bullies – they are unbeaten in their last 17 Tests at home stretching back to 2017 – Stead played it down and pointed out that New Zealand have had overseas success in Sri Lanka, where they drew the series 1-1 in 2019 and the UAE, where they toppled Pakistan 2-1 in 2018.”It’s the same [ranking] method they use for everyone,” Stead said. “Every place you go, it’s very hard to win away from home. That’s something we’ve talked about as a team is ensuring that all test wins are special but especially ones you win away from home. Yes, we weren’t at our best last year versus Australia but I can remember a few other test wins that we have done really well, in UAE and Sri Lanka, and they are just as special as the home ones as well.”Watch cricket on ESPN+

de Grandhomme to return to action in Super Smash
Allrounder Colin de Grandhomme, who had been sidelined from both the West Indies and Pakistan series with a foot injury, is set to return to action in the ongoing Super Smash 2020-21. According to Stead, he could turn out for Northern Knights from next week.”He’s progressing well and we’re on track for either the 15th or 17th of January – hopefully that’s the return date for him probably only as a batsman at this stage,” Stead said of de Grandhomme. “He’s still going through development of his running protocols and getting up to speed where we want to with that and he’s just starting to get back to some bowling right now. “As for fast bowler Lockie Ferguson (back injury), he is likely to undergo a scan next week.”That will show whether there’s been a good amount of healing with the bone and whether we need to take it longer,” Stead said. “We’ll know more after that what are our next steps forward are.”Meanwhile, left-arm fingerspinner Ajaz Patel has already marked his comeback from a calf injury with four appearances for Central Stags in the Super Smash. However, he has managed only one wicket in 15 overs, conceding at 8.26 an over.

Ratcliffe and INEOS make contact to sign "brave" £50m+ winger for Man Utd

Manchester United have asked about the availability of a £50m+ rated winger, according to reports.

Man Utd transfer rumours

Manchester United had an up-and-down 2023/24 campaign. The Red Devils finished 8th in the Premier League, missing out on any form of European football through their position, but ended the campaign with an FA Cup triumph over rivals Manchester City to qualify for the Europa League. This victory was enough to see Sir Jim Ratcliffe keep Erik ten Hag in his role heading into the 2024/25 campaign.

After making a decision on the manager front, INEOS and Ratcliffe's attention must now turn to the summer transfer window and reshaping the United squad. Speaking back in March, Ratcliffe dismissed the idea of signing superstar names like Jude Bellingham or Kylian Mbappe.

“He’s [Bellingham] a great footballer [but] it’s not where our focus is. The solution isn’t spending a lot of money on a couple of great players. They’ve done that, if you look at the last 10 years. The first thing we need to do is get the right people in the right boxes, managing and organising the club.

"We must make sure we get recruitment right, such a vital part of running a football club is getting recruitment right, finding new players. I’d rather find the next Mbappe, rather than spend a fortune to buy success. It’s not that clever to buy Mbappe, anybody could figure that one out.”

This policy is seemingly already in place with United recently linked to the likes of talented youngster Desire Doue and Lille centre-back Leny Yoro.

Man Utd make contact to sign "brave" £50m+ winger

Now, a fresh name, who fits Ratcliffe's stance of signing players who are not quite yet superstars, has emerged as a target for the Premier League giants. The player in question is Real Sociedad and Japan winger, Takefusa Kubo.

Kubo burst onto the sign in 2019 when he joined Real Madrid from FC Tokyo. However, he did not play any games for Real's senior side and was instead loaned out to the likes of Mallorca, with their chief executive, Maheta Molango, previously tipping the 23-year-old for success back in 2019.

"I was very, very impressed by Kubo when I met him," he said. "He's super humble, super down to earth. It's not easy to keep your feet on the ground when you've been a superstar since you were 10.

"Kubo is very focused, very professional. That's also down to his family, they're very humble and hard-working. His talent is obvious, but the reason why he will one day be a football superstar is his head. He sees things that other people don't see, the ability to see a pass and pick a long ball. His intelligence is outstanding. He is very skilled technically but also very brave, he's not scared of the ball and of taking on responsibility."

Kubo joined his current side, Real Sociedad, in 2022 and has scored 16 goals and provided 14 assists for the Spanish outfit. His displays for Sociedad have seemingly attracted the attention of some top Premier League sides with Mundo Deportivo [via Sport Witness] claiming the club are demanding €60m (£50.7m) for the Japanese star. The report goes on to name Manchester United as one of the five Premier League sides interested in the winger, with the Red Devils said to have asked about the player by making contact.

"Let’s see" – Romano drops intriguing update on Jaden Philogene and Ipswich

After an exceptional Championship campaign saw them clinch promotion to the Premier League, Ipswich Town look set to bring in a host of quality players to bolster Kieran McKenna's side.

Tractor Boys target top flight talent

The latest rumours out of Portman Road have linked Ipswich with a move for Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. The England youth keeper spent last season on loan with Swansea City, and now looks set to become McKenna's number one in the Premier League.

Joining Rushworth on McKenna's shopping list is free agent Ben Johnson. Ipswich have reportedly entered advanced talks with the representatives of the 24-year-old, who was most recently on the books at West Ham. The full back brings with him bags of top flight experience from his time with the Hammers.

A central defender is aslo high on the Tractor Boys' list of priorities with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jacob Greaves the two names most commonly assocaited with a move to Portman Road. The latter has long been regarded as Ipswich's top target, however Fabrizio Romano has now dropped some new information on the club's quest to sign one of his Hull City teammates.

Romano drops update on Philogene transfer

As reported by The East Anglian Daily Times, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has dropped some new information in Ipswich's pursuit of Hull City's Jaden Philogene. Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano provided an update on the transfer, telling listeners: "There is interest from several Premier League clubs – let me mention especially West Ham and Ipswich Town.

"These two clubs have already reached out to the player's side to understand the conditions of the deal. Let's see what's going to happen in terms of negotiations, but for sure, he's going to be one to watch in the next weeks."

Jaden Philogene in action for England Under 21s

Philogene joined the Tigers in a £5 million move from Aston Villa last summer. Since touching down in East Yorkshire the winger has been electric, contributing 12 goals and 6 assists as Hull finished seventh in Championship last season.

Whilst the 22-year-old had been setting the MKM Stadium alight for much of the season, Philogene caught the attention of the wider footballing world with a fantastic rabona goal during Hull's 2-1 victory over Rotherham back in February. Speaking on the effort, former boss Liam Rosenior waxed lyrical about the goal.

"Ridiculous. His ability is something we missed for a long time. He’s only going to get better with the more games he plays. It’s not just his goal or his showreel moments, it’s his energy levels he gives the team – he works so hard.

“He’s got real belief he can be a top player but the reason he can be a top player is because he works so hard on his game. Jaden’s was one of many really good performances.”

Whilst the Tractor Boys are taking steps towards making Philogene an Ipswich player there may be a couple of hurdles in their pursuit. Firstly is the £25 million fee that Hull owner Acun Ilicali wants for the player and the second is the reported interest from Spanish giants Barcelona.
