Indeed, the Gunners were involved in a public transfer saga over RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, until the Slovenia international decided to commit his future to Leipzig by penning a new contract.

Arsenal made an offer for Sesko before he chose to remain in Germany, but there is no time to rue that call, as sporting director Edu Gaspar looks to upgrade Mikel Arteta's squad and challenge again for a Premier League title.

While the addition of a prolific new striker is set to be one to watch over the coming weeks, the north Londoners have also long been tipped to add another wide player as well, despite the excellent form of Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard last season.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a few interesting wingers, and one of them is currently lighting up Euro 2024 with Spain. Indeed, Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams is turning heads at the tournament, especially against Italy where he gave Giovanni Di Lorenzo nightmares out wide.

The 21-year-old hit double figures for La Liga assists last season and is currently making a name for himself as one of Europe's brightest young forward players. His potential transfer away from Bilbao has also been called one of the biggest stories of this summer transfer window.

Arteta is reportedly driving a move to sign Williams for Arsenal, and it is believed that he's already held talks over joining the club (Graeme Bailey).

Arsenal ready to pay nearly £50 million for Williams

According to CaughtOffside, who have an update on their pursuit, Edu and co are prepared to spend big on the £200,000-per-week forward. They claim Arsenal are ready to trigger Williams' £49 million release clause and beat the likes of Man United to his signing, with the Red Devils also in contention to do a deal and rate him highly.

Arteta's side are one of the more "advancing" sides right now, emerging as serious contenders for his green light, and he could be the ideal option to rotate with Saka next season. The Englishman played 49 games in all competitions last season and was afforded precious little opportunity to rest, so Williams' arrival could allow that.

Dinesh Karthik has stepped down as the Kolkata Knight Riders captain, with Eoin Morgan replacing him. Karthik, a team statement said, wanted to focus on his batting.The franchise made the announcement hours before their match against defending champions Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi on Friday. The Knight Riders are currently fourth on the points table with four wins and three losses in first half of the season.Karthik had struggled for fluency in the first seven matches this season after shuffling around in the middle order. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes.”In 2018 Karthik was bought by the Knight Riders for INR 7.4 crore ($1.156 million then) and appointed as captain. Under him, the Knight Riders finished third in 2018 and fifth in 2019. Overall Karthik has so far scored 859 runs at a strike rate of nearly 146 with five half-centuries. However, he has been bothered by his batting position this IPL.At the season opening media conference, Karthik admitted as much that he was still working out the right batting position with head coach Brendon McCullum. “That is something on top of our agenda as well. The coach is not letting me go where I want,” Karthik said tongue-in-cheek, responding to a query about whether he would be batting ahead of Nitish Rana in the top order.McCullum had said the Knight Riders had enough left-hand and right-hand batting options. “We got such world-class players in the likes of Dinesh and also Nitish so we can mix and match a little bit based on strategy. Morgan has been solid with the bat. Currently he is the second-best batsman for the Knight Riders scoring 175 runs at a strike rate of nearly 130.Morgan is known mainly for his success as England ODI captain, especially the 2019 World Cup win. But he has equally extensive experience as a leader in T20s. In 88 T20s he has been captain, Morgan has won 39 matches, lost 45, tied twice with one no result.Morgan was bought by the Knight Riders at the 2020 auction for INR 5.25 cr ($739,000). His close relationship with McCullum was highlighted as one key reason behind the franchise hiring him. But Morgan was brought in for the dual purpose of lending experience in the middle order and helping the Knight Riders’ leadership group comprising McCullum, Karthik and Abhishek Nayar.”Within any good side or great side around the world you got to have a number of leaders within the change room. We’ve got them in abundance,” Morgan said. “We have a lot of young guys coming through that lead from the front: (Shubman) Gill, Rana to name a few… (Kamlesh) Nagarkoti has stepped up at different stages. And we have an abundance of overseas players to lead as well. So between myself and Dinesh, captain and vice-captain, we can be at the forefront of that, but the driving engine is the guys behind us.”The rise in Morgan’s stature can be gauged from the fact that in 2012 he and McCullum were team-mates at the Knight Riders. Now he is an established leader, talked about as one of the best limited overs captains in white-ball cricket. Morgan himself has talked about the big difference since 2012 and now his belief in himself as batsman and leader has grown immensely.”He’s an incredibly dangerous player and probably the best middle-order batsman in the shorter version over the last two years,” McCullum told the Indian daily recently.Mysore said the franchise was “fortunate” to have Morgan, who was “willing” to lead the Knight Riders. “DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner.”

In a recent column for , Carragher compared Saliba and Gabriel to some of the most iconic centre-back pairings and claimed that if the duo can maintain their current trajectory, they will one day be mentioned in the same breath as Chelsea’s John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho, as well as Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

“Provided they stay together, we will eventually reference Saliba and Gabriel in the same breath as the two stand-out partnerships of my generation; Chelsea ’s John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho, and Manchester United ’s Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic,” Carragher wrote.

“Arsenal must win the Premier League or Champions League for the duo to establish themselves in that hall of fame, but they are making giant strides and are the biggest reason why Mikel Arteta ’s side can travel to Manchester City with confidence this weekend.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

If Terry and Carvalho set the defensive benchmark by conceding just 15 goals during their Premier League-winning 2004/05 season, Ferdinand and Vidic formed the backbone of United's defence in multiple title-winning teams under Sir Alex Ferguson. Carragher believes that they were not only great defenders in their own capacity but "complemented" each other in a pairing which formed the foundation for their success.

"I rank Terry and Carvalho as the Premier League’s No 1," Carragher opined. "They were the foundation of Jose Mourinho’s brilliant Chelsea side, rewriting the records and redefining what was possible at the highest level by conceding just 15 goals in a Premier League season in 2004-05.

"Ferdinand and Vidic closely follow as the ideal duo in a more attacking Manchester United team – the stand-out of the many great defences Sir Alex Ferguson constructed during his reign. What set them apart is they were equals, as opposed to one superior defender carrying the other which is often the case, even in the most celebrated defensive collaborations. Perfect partners complement each other so we do not think of one without the other."

However, Carragher warned that Saliba and Gabriel must remain consistent to be counted among the greats.

“The great pairings do not shine for one or even two incredible seasons," he said. "After Vidic joined Ferdinand at Old Trafford, United won five Premier League titles and the Champions League. Terry and Carvalho were champions three out of their six years together. Saliba and Gabriel have made an impressive start. They need no reminding of what is demanded of them to make the early comparison with the greats of the game stick rather than sound ridiculously premature.”

وقال الشناوي في تصريحاته لـ “فيفا” :”كلاعبين اجتمعنا لمشاهدة القرعة معًا وأعتقد أنها مجموعة متوازنة وجيدة تضم فرقًا قوية مثل إنتر ميامي وبورتو وبالميراس”.

وأضاف قائد الأهلي: “أعتقد أننا نمتلك القدرة على الوصول إلى مرحلة خروج المغلوب في البطولة”.

وفي تصريحات للموقع الرسمي للأهلي، أشار الشناوي إلى أن الفريق سوف يستعد جيدًا لمباريات بطولة كأس العالم للأندية، وأن كل فرق المجموعة قوية، ولديها عناصر مميزة.

أكد الشناوي أيضًا أن لاعبي الأهلي تمنوا مواجهة فريق إنتر ميامي ونجمه ليونيل ميسي، ولديهم رغبة في مواجهة فرق عالمية مثل إنتر ميلان ويوفنتوس، بعد أن سبق للنادي مواجهة بايرن ميونخ الألماني وريال مدريد الإسباني.

وأستطرد موضحًا أن مشاركة الأهلي وسط هذه الكوكبة من الأندية العالمية تدعو للفخر الشديد، من جانب الجهاز الفني واللاعبين والمسئولين والجماهير.

وذكر الشناوي في حديثه أن البطولة فرصة لرفع اسم الأهلي في المحافل العالمية، خاصة بعد النجاحات العديدة للفريق في إفريقيا.

وأصر حارس الأهلي على أن الأجواء في البطولات الكبرى فرصة لإظهار قدرات اللاعبين، وأن هناك فترة طويلة متبقية على انطلاق البطولة، والطموحات كبيرة في المنافسة بشكل عام، والأهلي يضع نصب عينه العمل على إحراز البطولات والوصول إلى أفضل ما يكون.

ولفت النظر إلى أن الفريق لديه مباراة هامة أمام أورلاندو في دور المجموعات بدوري أبطال إفريقيا، وسوف يغلق صفحة القرعة تمامًا، ويصب كامل التركيز على تلك المباراة.

A CDC panel ruled that the pitch demonstrated “excessive unevenness of bounce” after meeting at Lord’s in November, thus giving it a ‘poor’ rating under the ECB’s pitch regulations.Somerset accepted the charge at the time, but contested the suggestion that the pitch was not the best they could have produced. “The club are very disappointed with the panel’s decision but has concluded that it is in the best interest of all parties to move forward,” a club statement said last year.A further 12 points were suspended for two years in the initial decision, which remain in place for the next two Championship seasons.Somerset did not contest the proposal to push the penalty back by 12 months, and did not comment publicly.

COMEÇO CALMO
A partida iniciou bastante tranquila, com as duas equipes se estudando a todo momento. Contudo, foi a Ponte Preta quem começou um pouco mais à frente. Aos 9, Camilo cruzou na cabeça de Richard, que desviou no canto. O goleiro Glédson viu a bola passar perto da trave esquerda.

Na sequência, o Avaí teve mais posse de bola e ficou controlando a partida. Aos 15, Vinicius Leite avançou pela esquerda, arriscando. O chute, porém, foi sem grandes perigos para fora.

LANCE POLÊMICO E PARTIDA TRUNCADA
Depois disso, a partida ficou ainda mais equilibrada, com poucas oportunidades para ambas as equipes. Aos 16, Camilo disputou bola com o goleiro Glédson, onde acabou sendo derrubado. A Ponte Preta pediu pênalti, mas foi o próprio meia da Macaca quem levou amarelo por simulação.

GRANDES CHANCES DA MACACA
Depois disso, o confronto se perdeu um pouco, com a arbitragem três amarelos em menos de 20 minutos. Dessa forma, uma das melhores chances saiu no final da etapa, com Richard. Aos 46, Camilo puxou contra-ataque e ajeitou para Richard, que mandou uma bomba. Glédson espalmou e salvou o Avaí, que não conseguiu criar chances nos 45 minutos iniciais.

Na sequência, Rodrigão completou um cruzamento de cabeça, mandando a bola em direção às redes. No entanto, o atacante estava à frente da defesa do Avaí, e a arbitragem pegou o impedimento.

JOGO AINDA MAIS TRUNCADO
Na volta do intervalo, as equipes voltaram ainda mais equilibradas, e nenhuma das duas conseguiu sequer colocar a bola no chão. No início, Diego Renan e Copete tiveram chances, mas acabaram mandando para fora.

PONTE DESPERDIÇA CHANCES
Aos 20, a primeira boa oportunidade foi criada, por parte da Ponte Preta. Richard cobrou escanteio na cabeça de Fábio Sanches, que desviou na primeira trave e quase marcou. Contudo, a bola apenas passou muito perto da meta de Glédson.

Na sequência, aos 22, foi a vez de Thalles, que havia acabado de entrar em campo, recebeu de Moisés. O meia tentou de primeira, com Glédson adiantado. No entanto, perdeu a oportunidade. Oito minutos depois, Moisés foi para cima de Edilson, deixando o lateral no chão e batendo firme. A bola acabou indo na rede, mas pelo lado de fora.

FINAL COM EMOÇÃO
Depois de ficar quase toda a partida sem pressionar e criar, o Avaí assustou a Ponte. Aos 43, Renato acabou travado duas vezes pela zaga da Macaca. Três minutos depois, Edilson cobrou falta quase do meio-campo, levando perigo. Contudo, Ygor espalmou.

The Magpies currently sit in tenth place, 16 points off the top four, with the prospect of a second consecutive season of European football at St James' highly unlikely.

Despite the injuries, one player has remained fit but has failed to replicate his good form from last campaign, with the talent looking well past his best in recent weeks.

Dan Burn's stats for Newcastle in 2023/24

Newcastle-born defender Dan Burn was one of the first additions following the PIF takeover, with the 6 foot 6 defender having an immediate impact at St James' Park.

Despite his huge frame, he was mainly utilised as a left-back last season for Howe as the club finished fourth in the Premier League. He impressed with his defensive abilities, but it appears as though he's been found out by most opposition.

However, his lack of pace and energy down the left-hand side is an area of concern for Howe when faced with quick wingers, as demonstrated against Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga…

With the likes of youngsters Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento waiting for their opportunity, boss Howe should look to utilise the duo more, with the pair both more suited to a full-back role than the £55k-per-week defender.

Dan Burn's market value in 2024

After joining the club for £13m from Brighton and Hove Albion back in January 2022, Burn's market value has dropped significantly since, with the 31-year-old now only worth £9m, as per Transfermarkt.

His value is far lower than fellow Magpies player Jacob Murphy, for instance, with the 29-year-old valued at £13m despite only featuring 11 times in England's top flight so far this season.

Given Burn's recent form, it's no surprise to see his value take a hit as a result, with the defender unlikely to increase his price tag given his age and recent displays.

His contract expires in June next year, with the defender, who will be 33 when it expires, unlikely to be offered a new deal with Howe's side looking to give youngsters Livramento and Hall more games to allow them to progress at St James'.
