Celtic team news: Rodgers could bin £13k-p/w "machine" for Old Firm

Scottish champions Celtic will be hoping to shake off their recent woes ahead of this afternoon's intriguing Old Firm derby encounter, with Brendan Rodgers' side heading into that crunch clash having failed to win either of their previous two games in all competitions.

The Parkhead outfit notably saw any hopes of defending their treble dashed after slipping to a shock 1-0 defeat away to Kilmarnock in the League Cup two weeks ago, before being held to a goalless draw following another frustrating outing at home to St Johnstone in the league last weekend.

Such limp form is far from ideal preparation for today's trip to Ibrox to face bitter rivals Rangers, with Rodgers likely needing to shuffle his pack if he is to avoid witnessing another uninspiring performance from his side.

Who will start for Celtic against Rangers?

A major factor in the Hoops' current woes is the raft of injury issues that have impacted the first-team squad, with options in the centre of defence looking particularly thin on the ground amid the long-term injuries to the likes of Stephen Welsh, Cameron Carter-Vickers and summer signing, Maik Nawrocki.

With midfield maestro Reo Hatate also currently sidelined – alongside compatriot Yuki Kobayashi – Rodgers' squad depth is being well and truly tested, with it likely to be something of a makeshift side that takes to the field today.

The forward line has also not been exempt from injury with July arrival Marco Tilio yet to feature and with Mikey Johnston set to be out for an extended period, while South Korean striker Oh Hyeon-gyu has been absent since being named on the bench on the opening weekend.

That has left the Celtic boss with limited options to choose from in the final third, although the Northern Irishman must still showcase his ruthless streak to help revive his misfiring attacking unit, with Daizen Maeda one such asset who simply needs to give way.

Will Maeda start against Rangers?

Fresh off the back of a season that saw the 25-year-old score 11 goals and register seven assists under former boss Ange Postecoglou, it is fair to say that the Japanese international has been unable to replicate that form this time around, with just one assist and no goals to his name after starting all four games so far this term.

The relentless "machine" – as previously described by former Hoops star Chris Sutton – was notably off the pace in the shock defeat to Killie, with Football Scotland's Robbie Hanratty writing that the wideman 'wasn't himself at all' after putting in 'a really quiet and uncharacteristic performance'.

That errant display was followed up by another 'pretty quiet' outing last time out, in the words of Glasgow World's Lewis Anderson, with 'more needed' from the £13k-per-week ace from his wide berth.

Celtic forward Daizen Maeda.

Such woes were laid bare against the Saints as Maeda lost possession on ten occasions from his 31 touches as a marker of his lack of composure, having also failed to register a single key pass before being hooked on the hour mark, as per Sofascore.

As the player himself admitted, the change in the dugout has potentially been a factor in his recent downturn in performance, with the former Yokohama F.Marinos ace stating earlier this week:

"Personally I feel that the tactics of the previous manager are kind-of instilled in my game. So obviously I have to change to the new style."

While the upcoming meeting with Michael Beale's men may be the perfect time for Maeda to prove that he has adapted to life under Rodgers – having previously registered four goals and assists in ten meetings with the Light Blues – the champions can ill-afford to carry any passengers for such a crucial encounter.

After failing to find the back of the net in their last two games, something needs to give for Celtic if they are to bounce back at Ibrox.

Arsenal Eye Move For "Top-Class" £80m Livewire

Arsenal’s rise to a title contender, spurred on by the relentless Mikel Arteta and his young, dynamic squad has opened up new possibilities in the transfer market, allowing the Gunners to attract a new level of talent.

They have already emphatically flexed their muscle in this summer’s transfer window by beating Manchester City to the signature of Declan Rice.

They have also recruited Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz, with David Raya also on the verge of a move to the Emirates Stadium.

The rumours are suggesting their business is not finished and Nicolo Barella has been linked with a move to North London.

What’s the latest on Nicolo Barella to Arsenal?

According to reports in Italy, Inter Milan are prepared for an assault for the midfielder, with Arsenal as one of the interested parties.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

Earlier in the window, Newcastle United had been chasing Barella, but they were warded off by Inter’s monstrous £80m valuation. Since then, the high-flying Magpies have signed Sandro Tonali.

Would Nicolo Barella be a good signing for Arsenal?

In the past few years, the Italian, who has been lauded as “top-class” by Jurgen Klopp, has established himself as one of the Neazzurri’s most important and influential assets. During the 2020/21 season, Barella scored three times and created nine assists as Inter was crowned the Serie A Champions.

The following term, he notched the joint-second most assists (12) in the league, whilst also winning the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup.

In the most recent season, the 5 foot 8 livewire registered 19 goal involvements, whilst also starting 12 of the club’s 13 Champions League games, in which they made the unlikely journey to the final.

The 45-cap international has always maintained a reputation for being an accomplished midfielder, renowned for his energy, technique, and tenacity – this is portrayed by his domestic statistics from last campaign in which he managed 85% pass accuracy, averaged 1.6 key passes and 1.4 tackles per game, as well as completing 70% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore.

By channelling his defensive and offensive capabilities, Arteta could unearth the perfect candidate to inherit Granit Xhaka’s mantle.

Last season, the former Borussia Monchengladbach assumed a different role in the team. Instead of operating as part of a two-man pivot in a 4-2-3-1 system, primarily tasked with protecting the defence, orchestrating play from deep, and taking long shots, he was instead awarded the role as a freer, more advanced central midfielder.

Granit Xhaka

The 30-year-old relished this opportunity, recording 14 goal contributions and starting in 36 of the club’s 38 Premier League games. Previously, the Swiss had never managed more than eight domestic goal involvements and his departure to Bayer Leverkusen means he will be sorely missed by sections of the fanbase.

However, if the Gunners somehow landed Barella, it can be argued he is an upgrade on Xhaka, outranking his senior for shot-creating actions per 90 (3.65 vs 3.42), progressive passes per 90 (6.62 vs 6.32), progressive carries per 90 (2.8 vs 1.22), and successful take-ons per 90 (1.2 vs 0.49).

These numbers mean that Barella sits within the best 22% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for the aforementioned statistics and would be phenomenal for Arteta’s revolution.

Queensland fall seven short in thrilling draw

Queensland fell just seven runs short of their target of 297 with three wickets in hand to draw against Western Australia on the fourth day in Perth

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Nov-2017Getty ImagesQueensland fell just seven runs short of their target of 297, with three wickets in hand, as their match against Western Australia ended in a thrilling draw on the fourth day in Perth. Going strong at 2 for 203 at one point on the back of Joe Burns’ century, Queensland needed 50 runs off 39 balls, and later 34 off 32. However, they suffered a collapse from 3 for 243 to 7 for 286 and needed 12 off the final over but Matthew Kelly – who took a five-for – conceded only five runs. Charlie Hemphrey led Queensland with 60 off 52 balls until they were 16 away from the target, but he fell with 10 balls left in the day.Queensland were dented early in the chase by Kelly, who had Matt Renshaw caught behind for 7 in the sixth over, before Burns and Labuschagne stitched a partnership of 154 at 4.69 runs per over to rally the score towards 200. Kelly trapped Labuschagne lbw for 72 in the 39th over and bowled Burns for 103 seven overs later when Queensland were 94 away from the target. Hemphrey steered them closer but Mitchell Marsh removed Jack Wildermuth and Queensland lost four wickets for 43 runs as Kelly struck twice more. Queensland’s chances decreased further once Hemphrey was caught off Marsh and they ended on 7 for 290 in 59 overs. As many as 431 runs were score on the day as Western Australia stretched their score from an overnight 5 for 165 to declare on 8 for 306 in just over 34 overs. They were in trouble early in the day when they lost three wickets for five runs and were 8 for 196 with a lead of 186. However, Ashton Turner took his score from 30 to an unbeaten 101 off 160 balls and was assisted by No. 11 Jason Behrendorff who struck a patient 39 off 83. They put together 110 unbeaten runs before the declaration. Josh Inglish, the other overnight batsman, had struck 54, before Wildermuth removed him and Andrew Holder in consecutive overs, and Kelly fell for a duck.Behrendorff was nursing a back injury and did not bowl on Sunday and Monday.

Bangladesh gain control after Shakib's five-for

Bangladesh pushed their lead to 88, with nine wickets in hand, after bowling Australia out for 217 on the second day in Mirpur

The Report by Brydon Coverdale28-Aug-2017Bangladesh 260 and 45 for 1 (Tamim 30*, Taijul 0*) lead Australia 217 (Renshaw 45, Shakib 5-68, Mehidy 3-62) by 88 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShakib Al Hasan marked the first day of his 50th Test match by scoring a half-century; on the second day, he continued the party with a five-wicket haul. There is every reason to think that by the end of this match, he might be celebrating Bangladesh’s first ever Test win over Australia. But that is getting ahead of proceedings. For the time being, Bangladesh will be content with the strong position in which they find themselves at stumps on day two.It was a day that began brilliantly for Bangladesh. Australia walked out on 18 for 3, and within three overs they had stumbled to 33 for 4 when Steven Smith danced down the pitch, tried to flick Mehidy Hasan through the leg side and was bowled. Smith is easily Australia’s best player of spin – three centuries in four Tests in India earlier this year attest to that. To lose him in these conditions was to hand Bangladesh complete control.Pat Cummins was bowled for a patient 25•Getty ImagesThere was a fightback of sorts from Australia, first through a 69-run partnership between Peter Handscomb and Matt Renshaw, and then a 49-run stand involving Ashton Agar and Pat Cummins. But Bangladesh remained well on top. By the close of play their first-innings lead of 43 had ballooned back out to 88, with nine wickets in hand. Only Soumya Sarkar, who rashly holed out to a juggling Usman Khawaja at long-on off Ashton Agar, had fallen for 15. Tamim Iqbal was set on 30, with nightwatchman Taijul Islam yet to score. But the key man on this day, as on the first day, was Shakib, who for the eighth time in his Test career combined a half-century with a five-wicket haul. Only Ian Botham has done so on more occasions (11), though from more than twice as many Tests. Shakib also joined Muttiah Muralitharan, Rangana Herath and Dale Steyn as the only bowlers with Test five-fors against all nine possible Test opponents: next stops, Ireland and Afghanistan.Shakib finished with 5 for 68, and created a couple more chances besides. He had a fine partner in Mehidy, who collected 3 for 62, while Taijul was the only other wicket-taker: nine wickets fell to spin, and there was one run-out. Notably, while there was decent turn, there was also variable bounce – some kept low and others kicked sharply off the surface – and this too will play on Australia’s minds when they enter their second innings. Not that batting was impossible: Handscomb and Renshaw handled things well during their partnership, though in the end Handscomb’s habit of playing deep inside his crease brought him undone when on 33 he missed one from Taijul and was rapped on the pads dead in front. Renshaw likewise failed to capitalise on his solid start, caught at slip for 45 when he poked at a Shakib delivery shortly before lunch.Such was Australia’s state of mental fogginess that shortly after the resumption, Matthew Wade was needlessly lbw to Mehidy for 5. Australia had both reviews remaining and the two men in the middle – Wade and Glenn Maxwell – were the last pair before the bowlers. But Wade declined to ask for a review that would have saved him – replays showed the ball would have slid down leg side and Nigel Llong’s decision would have been overturned.Tamim Iqbal flicks one into the leg side•Getty ImagesMaxwell made a confident 23 before he was lured out of his crease by Shakib, who turned the ball past the outside edge and Mushfiqur Rahim completed the stumping. Shakib might have had Agar stumped as well, but some exaggerated bounce off the pitch tricked Mushfiqur as it did the batsman. Another opportunity went begging when Cummins skied one towards cover off Shakib on 11 and Shafiul Islam dropped a straightforward chance.Cummins and Agar took those reprieves and used them to bat together for 25.2 overs, displaying impressive patience and technique that some of their top-order colleagues might learn from. For a while, it even looked like they might lift Australia close to Bangladesh’s total of 260. But on 25 from 89 balls, Cummins tried to drive Shakib through the off side and was bowled; Agar finished unbeaten on 41 off 97 when Josh Hazlewood was taken at short leg off Shakib for 5.Australia were not the only ones struggling: umpire Aleem Dar had two poor decisions overturned on review, first when he gave Renshaw lbw off a Mehidy delivery that would have sailed well over the top of the stumps, and then when he adjudged Cummins caught behind down leg off Shafiul Islam, when all the ball had touched was thigh pad. Both times, Dar self-admonished with face-palms. Australia, all out for 217, might have collectively done the same.

Arsenal Could Sign "Outstanding" £40m Saka Clone

Arsenal have once again been implicated in a transfer saga, and if their form from this window is anything to go by, the others involved should start worrying.

How much would Mohammed Kudus cost?

The latest on their pursuit of Mohammed Kudus comes courtesy of journalist Ben Jacobs, who took to Caught Offside to claim: "Kudus is under contract at Ajax until 2025 and is keen to leave. He has already rejected a one-year extension back in April.

“The Arsenal interest is genuine as well, although they won’t move prior to outgoings. They made contact a couple of weeks ago. Brighton are also in the race. Kudus is going to cost about £40m."

With Chelsea thought to be sniffing around the Ajax star too, that reported price tag could cull that list of suitors and leave the free-spending Gunners to secure this deal alone.

Given they saw off Real Madrid to tie down Kai Havertz and thwarted Manchester City to sign Declan Rice, the theme seems to be that if they want a player this summer, they will get him.

How good is Mohammed Kudus?

Whilst Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka are near-irreplaceable in their wide roles, Leandro Trossard proved what an injection of some fresh ideas can bring to a squad that is already on top.

Joining in January, the Belgian would record eight goal contributions in his first 11 league games for the Emirates outfit, helping prolong their title charge before the eventual collapse.

It could be argued that the failure to secure that honour came down to a lack of depth, which is something that has been rectified massively this summer. However, on the wing they still remain unimproved after such a fine window, leaving the three names mentioned as the only options before having to resort to Reiss Nelson.

Saka's potential absence would hurt in particular, given just how influential he has grown to be within this squad. Despite being just 21 years old, last season saw him enjoy one of his finest, building upon an 11-goal haul from the year before to score 15 and assist a further 11 in all competitions.

He finished as the club's joint-top scorer and featured in every single league match to emphasise his importance.

bukayo-saka

However, that reliance did understandably lead to a drop-off, as the England international endured a nine-game period where he would score just once at the back end of the campaign. For moments like this, when the youngster is in desperate need of rest, Kudus would provide the perfect alternative.

The Ghanaian trickster is too famed for his wicked left foot, preferring to cut inside from the right flank to devastating effect.

Last term saw him perfect such a movement, resulting in 18 goals and seven assists for the 22-year-old across all competitions. This came years after journalist Ives Galarcep had outlined him as being "outstanding" even then.

FBref helps further these similarities, as when compared against other wingers in the eight leagues most similar to the Eredivisie, Kudus ranks in the top 6% for total shots per 90, the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90 and the top 4% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.

He too poses a consistent offensive threat, capable of beating his man and troubling the keeper with ease.

mikel-arteta-1

Former Gunners favourite Kevin Campbell sought to supplement that notion too, claiming: "I remember watching him for Ajax and I was very impressed with him.

"He actually plays a bit like Saka at times, where he welcomes the contact and shifts away from it. He can play attacking midfield, up front or on the right, for £40m he’s great value for money."

For a price that is certainly affordable for a club of such stature and a play style that closely matches their star asset, it marks a no-brainer for Arteta to take a punt and finally give Saka a rest without fear of a dramatic dip in quality.

Newcastle United: Magpies Eyeing £26m Jesper Lindstrom Deal

Newcastle United are reportedly targeting a move for Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Jesper Lindstrom this summer, with the Bundesliga club expecting his departure in the current window.

The midfielder would join Sandro Tonali as another fresh face in the middle of the park for the Magpies.

What's the latest on Jesper Lindstrom to Newcastle United?

Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Lindstrom, who would cost €30-35m (£26-30m) this summer, according to Frankfurter Rundschau, via Sport Witness.

The Magpies are reportedly leading the way as the most interested party with their move for the midfielder, but aren't alone in their pursuit, with Arsenal and Juventus also interested in making a move for the 23-year-old.

Eintracht Frankfurt expect Lindstrom to leave this summer amid interest from across Europe, which could see Newcastle complete a move in the coming weeks, as we get closer to the start of the Premier League season.

Their interest comes as a slight surprise, given that they have already welcomed a midfielder in the form of Tonali this summer, but with Champions League football to contend with next season, added depth won't go amiss for Eddie Howe's side. It's certainly a deal to keep an eye on as the summer transfer window ticks by.

Who is Jesper Lindstrom?

Soccer Football – Bundesliga – Bayern Munich v Eintracht Frankfurt – Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany – January 28, 2023 Eintracht Frankfurt’s Jesper Lindstrom in action REUTERS/Leonhard Simon DFL REGULATIONS PROHIBIT ANY USE OF PHOTOGRAPHS AS IMAGE SEQUENCES AND/OR QUASI-VIDEO.

Still only 23, Lindstrom could get even better with his next move, whether that is at Newcastle or not. Last season, he enjoyed yet another impressive season for Frankfurt, scoring nine goals and assisting a further four from a range of positions.

Primarily a midfielder, the Dane can also play on the wing or in more advanced positions up alongside or tucked in behind the striker. With plenty to play for next season, Howe would undoubtedly appreciate a player who can play a range of positions. All it takes is one look at his work with Joelinton to really highlight how the manager gets the best out of versatile players.

Lindstrom has impressed many in the Bundesliga too, with Kevin Trapp saying, via HITC: “Jesper is still very young but is a huge talent.

“He shows it now more often. He’s (playing at) a high level, he’s on top form. The goal he scored last week against Leverkusen was beautiful and I guess he has a lot of confidence right now.”

Statistically speaking, the Frankfurt man has the look of a player who could step into a Howe side. According to FBref, Lindstrom actually outplayed Joelinton in some areas, making more progressive carries and attempting more take-ons than the current Newcastle midfielder.

The 23-year-old would only push on further at St James' Park, too, resulting in the development of an excellent option in a range of positions for Newcastle. For a fairly low fee, too, Lindstrom would be a risk-free deal in many ways, perhaps making it a no-brainer for the Magpies.

As they gear up to do even better than last season, taking on the Champions League, in the process, Newcastle will hope to add more reinforcements before the end of the window. If they get the right players in this summer, then they'll be right up there in the Premier League once again.

Leeds United Keen To Strike £10m Deal For Liverpool Giant Nat Phillips

Leeds United are keen to strike a summer deal to sign Liverpool defender Nat Phillips, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.

Is Nat Phillips leaving Liverpool?

The Reds centre-back got promoted to Jurgen Klopp’s first-team when he graduated from the club’s academy back in 2019, but even though he’s been in the senior fold for four years, he’s always been significantly low down in the pecking order.

During his time at Anfield, the 26-year-old has been sent out on two loans to receive more regular game time, the first at Stuttgart and the most recent being Bournemouth, but since returning, his minutes haven’t improved.

The Bolton-born talent was handed just one start in the top-flight last season, so despite still having two years remaining on his contract, Football Insider have reported that the Merseyside outfit are happy to listen to offers for him during the ongoing window and there's a chance he could way on his way to the Championship.

Are Leeds signing Phillips?

According to Hay in his column for The Athletic, Leeds are “interested” in signing Phillips ahead of the 2023/24 term. Liverpool are looking to receive approximately £10m in order to sanction the defender’s sale and the admiration from the Whites is “believed to be irrespective” of any incoming head coach or sporting director appointments.

Daniel Farke, who is claimed to be the leading contender for the managerial vacancy, was “keen to recruit” the 6 foot 2 titan during his spell at Norwich City, and even though he missed out at the time, he could be finally set to secure his long-term target should he arrive at Elland Road.

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

Could Phillips be a good addition in Yorkshire?

Leeds will know that Phillips wasn’t given a proper chance to prove what he’s capable of last season, but when handed the small opportunity to play, the centre-back displayed bags of potential, so he would be a promising recruit for the 49ers.

He averaged two aerial wins per top-flight game during the previous term with his height and physcality having formerly seen him hailed “colossal” by journalist Josh Bunting, not to mention that he’s calm and composed in possession, recording an 86.6% pass success rate which was higher than any of the regular starters in Yorkshire.

Finally, Phillips has the versatility to operate out wide at right-back alongside his usual role, which will be an attractive attribute considering the injuries that have so often plagued Leeds' defensive ranks in recent years, so he would be a great option for the new coach to have available.
