Arteta is brewing a Wilshere & Xhaka hybrid in Arsenal's "fearless" star

Despite the fact that Arsenal sit second in the Premier League table and are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, this has been one of the hardest seasons of Mikel Arteta’s managerial career to date.

It all started with the bizarre red card for Declan Rice against Brighton in the early stages of the campaign, sent off for kicking the ball away.

From that moment, not a lot has gone Arsenal’s way. The Gunners saw Leandro Trossard also sent off for kicking the ball away against Man City, William Saliba give away a penalty for grazing heads with Joao Pedro in the return fixture against Brighton and a whole host of injuries.

Bukayo Saka has been missing since December, Martin Odegaard endured a few months out with an ankle problem, while Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz – the club’s only centre forwards – are out for the season.

How’s ya luck, Mikel? Not very good apparently.

Still, there has been one positive, and that’s that Arsenal may have found their answer to the Granit Xhaka question.

How Arsenal can fill their Granit Xhaka void

After the Switzerland international left the Emirates Stadium behind in 2023 after a career-best season in the final third, there weren’t too many worries about the future of his position.

Granit Xhaka

Kai Havertz – a £65m signing from Chelsea – was initially bought to fill the midfield vacancy but has become a striker – while Declan Rice, the mega £105m addition, has been moved further forward into the left 8 role in 2024/25. The trouble with Rice is that his right-footedness brings him inside more than you’d like from that role.

The other solution has been Mikel Merino who was also signed with the goal of improving their play on the left side of the pitch. Left-footed and a duel-winning machine, the signs looked bright before he’d taken to the field but the Spaniard hasn’t truly kicked on in his debut campaign. In fact, like Havertz, he’s looked more vibrant when playing as the central striker.

Then you have Oleksandr Zinchenko, who let’s be honest, hasn’t been given a fair chance in his natural midfield position.

The Ukrainian showed against PSV in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie that he’s still a cracking central midfielder, scoring the opening goal in beautiful fashion.

While Rice is intelligent enough and has the mentality to keep improving in the left 8 role, perhaps it’s Myles Lewis-Skelly who could fill that role in due course.

Arsenal's new Granit Xhaka and Jack Wilshere hybrid

Arsenal spent the best part of £200m on the trio of Rice, Havertz and Merino. It’s rather typical, therefore, that the solution may come from the academy, thus not costing Arteta and Co a single penny.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

That’s because 18-year-old superstar, Lewis-Skelly, a young individual described as “fearless” by Rice, looks like he could be the future of Arsenal’s midfield.

The teenager has broken through as a left-back this term and has done seriously well, notably scoring against Manchester City and then finding the back of the net on his England debut against Albania last Friday too.

However, despite being so impressive in that role, his future should lie in midfield. He’s a midfielder by trade and it’s helped him play that inverted left-back position to perfection.

He comes into central pockets, can evade the press and he’s also got a pass in his locker too. In short, the youngster pretty much has everything you want from a player looking to fill the Xhaka void. Crucially, he’s left-footed and forward-thinking too.

Like Xhaka, he’s a particularly progressive passer, notably making 4.38 progressive passes per 90 in the top flight this term. For context, the Swiss midfielder made 5.89 during his final season in the Premier League. The caveat for Lewis-Skelly is that he’s playing further back, meaning his numbers should rise if given more license in the final third.

That said, there’s also a bit of Jack Wilshere to the Arsenal teen, and that’s not just because they’ve both come through the Hale End academy.

Wilshere – like Lewis-Skelly – is left-footed and they both move in a very similar way. The former had the ability to change speed in an instant to burst past a player and his close control was exquisite, making it incredibly hard for anyone to get the ball from him.

As a result, he was fouled more times per 90 minutes (3.6) than any other Premier League player in the 2017/18 campaign. The Englishman’s career average was at 1.7 times per game. Compare that to Lewis-Skelly; he has been fouled 1.6 times per game, the second-highest rate at Arsenal behind only Bukayo Saka (2 times per game) throughout 2024/25.

They possess that difficult-to-teach art of inviting a foul and manipulating their body to initiate contact and drag the ball away from their opponent before they can nip in and win it.

Already boasting 26 first-team appearances to his name this term, the future is certainly bright for Lewis-Skelly, a player who boasts the best traits of both Xhaka and Wilshere.

Of anyone in this squad, he looks like the most natural successor to the left 8 role. Make it happen, Arteta.

Chelsea must sell Blues dud who's been a worse signing than Mudryk & Nkunku

Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku looked as though he could’ve departed during the January transfer window after being touted with a move to various sides.

The French forward, who cost £52m in the summer of 2023, has mainly been an impact player under Enzo Maresca this campaign, starting just six matches in the Premier League.

However, the injury to Nicolas Jackson has allowed for increased minutes in the side, starting each of the past four outings, but only managing to find the back of the net on one occasion.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Nkunku has registered 17 goals in 48 matches but ultimately has been unable to nail down a regular starting role when the squad is fully fit – with the club needing to cash in on him this summer.

That said, considering his relatively impressive record in front of goal, there have been two poorer signings, and they both need to be given the boot…

Mykhailo Mudryk’s stats for Chelsea

In January 2023, Chelsea secured an £88.5m deal for winger Mykhailo Mudryk from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk – with real hope and expectation of transforming the club’s attack.

The Blues won the bidding war with fellow English side Arsenal for the 24-year-old, and he looked to be a phenomenal addition after his cameo off the bench against Liverpool for his debut.

He was unable to find the back of the net in any of his first 17 appearances, but registered seven strikes last year in his first full campaign at the Bridge.

This campaign has seen the Ukrainian score three times, but he has been provisionally suspended since December after testing positive for a banned substance – putting his Blues career on hold for now, at least.

Chelsea winger Mykhaylo Mudryk

After such an expensive fee was shelled out for his signature, it’s safe to say Mudryk hasn’t lived up to expectations, scoring just 10 goals in his 73 appearances for the club.

However, despite his lack of impact in the capital over recent years, one other first-team member has undoubtedly been a worse addition, with Maresca desperately needing to cash in on him this summer.

The Chelsea player who’s been a worse signing than Mudryk

Over the years, Chelsea have made countless additions to try and catapult themselves back to the top of the Premier League, but have so far been unable to achieve such a feat.

All areas of the pitch have been strengthened as a result of Todd Boehly’s investment, but one department evidently needs more signings – especially after the lack of form of one player.

Maresca has continuously shown faith in goalkeeper Robert Sanchez between the sticks, as seen by his tally of 22 appearances for the Blues throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

The Spaniard joined the club in the summer of 2023 for a reported £25m but has since failed to live up to his huge price tag, often prone to a mistake in recent months.

Whilst he’s been benched for each of the last three games, it’s been something that is deserved when delving into his stats from 2024/25, struggling to offer that presence needed to bolster their defensive record.

The 27-year-old has conceded 27 times in his 21 Premier League outings, an average of 1.3 goals conceded per 90, whilst also only completing 69% of passes, unable to effectively play out from the back – something which Maresca demands from his keepers.

Sanchez has also made five errors leading to goals, the joint-highest of any shot-stopper in the division, undoubtedly costing the Blues in key moments which could affect their chances of securing Champions League football.

Whilst he cost nowhere near as much as Mudryk, the fee paid still looks way too expensive for the lack of impact he’s made on the side, often hindering the squad as a result of his selection.

Maresca has finally made the right decision in opting for Filip Jorgensen ahead of Sanchez in recent games, with the Italian needing to offload him this summer and try to recoup as much of the £25m fee as possible.

What Mathys Tel is now thinking about signing for Tottenham permanently

It is no secret that Tottenham Hotspur wish to make Mathys Tel’s stay indefinite after his initial loan move from Bayern Munich, but it is now believed that manager Ange Postecoglou has been given a real bit of encouragement as he looks to make it happen.

Likelihood of Mathys Tel staying at Tottenham uncertain

While Postecoglou is convinced that Tel is staying at Spurs for the long-haul, there is still uncertainty surrounding the 19-year-old’s future in north London.

£400k-per-week forward has privately refused to rule out joining Tottenham

Spurs appear to have been given a transfer boost.

Tel put pen to paper on a potential six-year contract at Tottenham, if the club opt to trigger the £45 million buy-option in his temporary deal, but German media have reported that his stay is certainly not a foregone conclusion.

Tel is believed to still be keen on a move to Man United, and he could even decide to remain at Bayern for the 2025/2026 season.

“There were also talks with Manchester United who were interested in Mathys Tel’s signature,” wrote Bundesliga insider Christian Falk on his own version of the Dailybriefing recently.

“Tel was certainly open to the move, but United weren’t prepared to pay the loan fee Bayern Munich were demanding at the time (€5m). So, you see, there was a huge difference to the offer Tottenham came to the table with. Whether Tel stays with Bayern beyond the summer or moves on, it’s entirely up to him. If he can make the step to United, he would like to do it.”

The versatile teenage attacker has already impressed in flashes since his switch to N17, so much so that sections of supporters are extremely keen to see Tel don Lilywhite next term and beyond.

While a summer move to Old Trafford or staying at Bayern hasn’t been ruled out yet, a report by GiveMeSport has shared some good news for Spurs in regard to Tel’s future.

Tottenham given "significant boost" in permanent Mathys Tel deal

As per journalist Dean Jones, writing for GMS, Tottenham have been handed a “significant boost” as they eye a permanent deal for Tel.

This comes in the form of him being very happy with life in London right now, with Tel apparently giving “indications” that he is interested in making his Hotspur Way stay permanent behind-the-scenes.

Mathys Tel

As such, Spurs are now growing increasingly optimistic about signing the forward indefinitely this summer, with Tel’s new-found stance giving Postecoglou’s side a real reason to be confident.

This follows on from Postecoglou’s comments, stating that Tel is “100 per cent” wants to be in north London.

“Yes, 100 per cent. I am more than 100 per cent sure because he took so much time, was so diligent about finding out everything,” said Postecoglou when asked if Tel really wanted to join Spurs in January.

“He had other options so it gave me more confidence that we are getting the right kind of mentality, the right kind of player.”

£11k-p/w Celtic star who Rodgers has praised wants out as approaches made

One Celtic player is keen to leave Parkhead before the deadline, with multiple clubs making contact over a potential deal.

Celtic transfer rumours

The Hoops are on course to win yet another Scottish Premiership title and are impressing in the Champions League. However, despite this, Brendan Rodgers’ side is still being linked with numerous winter window signings.

One player likely to arrive at Parkhead in 2025 is former defender Kieran Tierney. The left-back is surplus to requirements at Arsenal and looks set to sign a pre-contract agreement with Celtic, possibly even joining on loan this month before his deal at the Emirates expires.

A number of targets in attack have also been linked such as Brondby’s Mathias Kvistgaarden, Sarpsborg 08’s Sondre Orjasaeter and Aston Villa’s Louie Barry. An offer was even made to bring Barry to Glasgow, however, a £5m payment with £5m worth of add-ons on top wasn’t enough for Aston Villa to accept.

A plethora of forwards have been linked with moves to Scotland amid uncertainty over the future of Luis Palma. The 25-year-old, on £11,000-a-week, had agreed to move to Rayo Vallecano before a transfer fell through.

Now, an update has emerged on Palma’s future at Celtic ahead of the deadline.

Celtic star Palma keen to leave as clubs make contact

As per Football Insider, Palma is keen to leave Celtic in search of regular first-team football, with an exit looking likely. That’s because four Championship sides, Sunderland, Stoke, Swansea and Queens Park Rangers, have all made contact over a move by registering their interest in the Honduras international.

Palma has been used sparingly by Rodgers this season, however, the Northern Irishman did praise the winger back in October after his hat trick in a friendly win against Sligo Rovers. “I was really pleased for Luis the other night. He took his goals really well, especially the last two, where he really got into the areas at the second point where we want him to get into.

“He worked hard, but that’s not an area there’s any doubt. You have to do the work, but that was a nice exercise for him. He wanted to stay in the international break to get the work in and obviously playing this game and it’s been a nice reward for him.

“It’s just about not forcing it. I think sometimes the thing with wingers is, when other players are in the team and scoring and creating goals, you feel you really want to come in and force it a little bit. I think sometimes that’s what’s happened with Luis.

“He’s a very good technician and when he plays for the team and works hard and presses well then he can be a really good player.”

After being knocked out of the Champions League by Inter Milan in midweek, Bayern appeared to take their anger out on third-from-bottom Heidenheim on Saturday at Voith-Arena.

Harry Kane scored his 24th Bundesliga goal of the season, to hit another landmark, when his strike from the edge of the area nestled in the corner in the 13th minute.

Serge Gnabry beautifully set up Konrad Laimer to run through on goal with a first-time pass, and the right-back duly delivered with his side's second seven minutes later.

Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Muller was having to work overtime to keep Bayern at bay, and despite making good saves from Michael Olise and Raphael Guerreiro, Kingsley Coman made it 3-0 from a very tight angle in the 36th minute.

The hosts barely laid a glove on the Bavarians and 11 minutes after the break it was 4-0 when Joshua Kimmich's composed finish proved too much for Muller.

Bayern stopper Jonas Urbig was a virtual spectator but managed to pull off a brilliant save to keep out Sirlord Conteh's goal-bound effort.

Vincent Kompany's side cruised to victory and opened up a nine-point lead at the top of the table with just four games remaining, although Bayer Leverkusen can cut that back to six if they beat St. Pauli on Sunday.

    THE MVP

While he could have had a hat-trick, his general play, ability to fashion chances, and his well-taken goal made up a very respectable display from England captain Kane. His goals are helping the German giants inch closer to another Bundesliga title, which would be his first-ever trophy.

  • THE BIG LOSER

Heidenheim as a whole put in a meek display in front of their own fans. They were completely outclassed by Bayern but they seemed to make it easier and get in their own way on Saturday afternoon. They are still in deep trouble ahead of the final few games of the season.

Bad news for Bamford: Leeds lining up swoop for "exceptional" forward

Leeds United have the chance to dip into the market to bolster their squad in the January transfer window, which officially opened for business last week.

The Whites are only one point ahead of Sheffield United and Burnley in second and third place and this means that their place in the automatic promotion spots is far from secure.

Daniel Farke’s side cannot afford to keep slipping up, if their rivals continue to pick up points, as their disappointing draw with Hull cost them two points.

The German head coach, despite watching his team slip up in the play-offs last season, knows what it takes to win a title race in the Championship, having done so twice during his time with Norwich City.

Farke lifted the second tier title in the 2018/19 and 2020/21 campaigns, the second of which he added Dimi Giannoulis as a starting-quality left-back in the January window, which suggests that he knows the value a winter addition can offer in a title race.

The Leeds head coach is, however, reportedly looking at attacking options to come in and bolster his Whites squad before the February deadline.

Leeds eyeing new centre-forward

According to the print edition of the Daily Mail (06/01/2025), as relayed by MOT Leeds News, the club are interested in a deal to sign Hoffenheim attacker Mergim Berisha.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report claims that the 49ers and Co are lining up a Leeds swoop to bring the centre-forward to Elland Road this month to provide him with another option in the forward areas of the pitch.

It does not reveal, however, how much Hoffenheim would demand from the Whites in order to sanction a deal for the 26-year-old ace, or if they would be prepared to listen to loan offers for his services.

The striker has only started three of his 11 appearances in the Bundesliga so far this season, which shows that he has not been a frontline option for the German side, as the forward has not played regular football, and could be open to moving away from the club ahead of the second half of the season.

However, it remains to be seen how viable a deal is for Leeds in the January transfer window, as there is no mention of any potential price or Hoffenheim’s stance on the situation.

The West Yorkshire outfit being interested in signing Berisha, though, should come as bad news for one player in the current Leeds squad, as it could mean that the end of Patrick Bamford’s career at Elland Road is growing closer and closer.

Why this is bad news for Patrick Bamford

The one-time England international has already struggled for game time in the Championship so far this season, with zero starts in the division, and the arrival of another forward would push him further down the pecking order.

Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph have shared the league starts between them, as both have been preferred ahead of him – and often as the first striker substitute off the bench when the other has started – by Farke.

Berisha coming in could prevent Bamford from even making a matchday squad, as having three recognised number nines on the bench, when Leeds play with one in their usual formation, would be overkill.

The English forward has played 127 minutes across ten substitute appearances in the league this season, which shows that he has already been struggling for minutes without the introduction of a third competitor in his position.

As you can see in the table above, Bamford featured in 33 of the club’s 46 regular season matches in the Championship last term, but underachieved in front of goal with eight goals from 9.52 xG.

The wasteful striker has found himself at the bottom of the striking pile as a result of his struggles on the pitch, with Joseph and Piroe firmly ahead of him in the pecking order.

Bamford has been linked with a January exit from Elland Road and the signing of Berisha could all-but-confirm the end of his career in Yorkshire, due to the position it would leave him in within the squad.

Why Leeds should sign Mergim Berisha

It is worth saying that Leeds are not in desperate need of a new number nine to come in and start every game to fire the team to promotion, albeit Farke would surely love to find a 25-goal-a-season marksman to deliver week-in-week-out.

Piroe has scored ten goals and provided five assists in 16 league starts for Leeds, which shows that the Dutchman has offered a big threat at the top end of the pitch for the German head coach.

This means that the Whites can afford to take a gamble with any forward addition this month, and that is exactly what the signing of Berisha would be, as he has not played much over the last 18 months.

The Germany international suffered an ACL injury that kept him out from November 2023 to July 2024 and that has restricted him to just 19 Bundesliga appearances since the start of last season.

His form in the 2022/23 campaign, however, suggests that the potential is there for him to come in as an exciting addition for Leeds, if Farke can help him to get back to his best.

As you can see in the table above, Berisha, who was hailed as “exceptional” in the box by Augsburg boss Enrico Maaßen that season, provided plenty of quality in the final third, as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

The 26-year-old star also produced an eye-catching 14 goals and 13 ‘big chances’ created in 24 starts for RB Salzburg during the 2020/21 campaign, which shows that he has been a consistent performer at the top end of the pitch for multiple of his previous clubs in the past – before his long-term injury.

Lineker, along with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, discussed the ongoing speculation surrounding Alexander-Arnold's future at Liverpool on the latest The Rest Is Football podcast, with the Match of the Day host suggesting a move to Real would be "fabulous" for the England international. The right-back is expected to sign a long term contract at the Bernabeu this summer when his deal at Anfield expires.

Alexander-Arnold's future has been the subject of intense debate, with reports last week claiming he has now virtually agreed a deal with the Spanish giants after refusing to commit his future to his boyhood club. The news sparked an angry reaction from some supporters, while Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher questioned the defender's decision to leave in search of silverware rather than continuing to build a legacy on Merseyside.

WHAT GARY LINEKER SAID

But speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said: "I don't mind saying I think it'd be an absolutely fabulous move for him. I think to play for Real Madrid is something that is very difficult to turn down. He's been at Liverpool since he was a kid. It transcends him into a kind of another level when you plan for a club like that.

"I think it'll it'll be absolutely brilliant for him. He's their sort of player because they like to see beautiful football and attacking football. He's one of the best passers of the ball in the world game."

Alexander-Arnold is currently sidelined with an ankle injury suffered during Liverpool's Champions League last-16 second leg defeat by PSG. He is likely to return to action towards the end of April, by which time runaway leaders Liverpool may have already sealed only their second Premier League title. Official confirmation of his move to Madrid could come before the end of the season, with manager Arne Slot already said to weighing up potential replacements.

Southampton sack Russell Martin

In a somewhat predictable turn of events, Southampton announced on Sunday evening that they had parted ways with Russell Martin after his side fell to a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham in front of an angry home crowd at St Mary’s.

“We can confirm that we have taken the difficult decision to part ways with our Men’s First Team Manager, Russell Martin”, they revealed in a statement.

“Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges that we would face this year as we readjusted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world.

“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board have supported Russell and his staff and been open and transparent regarding our expectations. We have all been on the same page in recognising the urgency of needing results to improve.”

Martin leaves Southampton with just five points to their name after 16 games, rooted to the bottom of the Premier League and with a long way to go to try and secure top-flight survival.

Given that clubs usually need around 37 points to avoid relegation, Southampton now have 22 games to find another 32 points, which will require a drastic change in their form.

Now the Saints and Sport Republic are on the hunt for a new manager, and may have found their man.

Southampton target out-of-work manager

That comes according to TBR Football, who claim that Southampton have now identified Ivan Juric as a potential new man in the hot seat on the south coast.

Juric rose to prominence in Serie A across spells with Hellas Verona and Torino, turning his sides into Serie A stalwarts and finishing consistently well clear of the relegation zone.

However, he lasted just 12 games at Roma before being sacked last month, losing five of those games though they were only beaten heavily on one occasion – 5-1 by Fiorentina.

Now available, he is thought to appeal to the Saints hierarchy, in part as they “would rather hire a coach currently out of work than risk paying a substantial fee”.

His style of play is also attractive. Setting his side up in a 3-4-2-1 system, his teams are known for their high press and tactical fouling, with Juric describing his own football as one in which he wants to “play aggressively” in a manner similar to his mentor Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta, one which often makes the team far better than the players that make it up.

There is no suggestion of a timeframe or contract length in the report, but Juric’s arrival would likely take some time for the Southampton players to get used to given his style of play, something that they may not have time for. He could be a risk, but may provide a massive payoff should his style take hold on the south coast.
