Liverpool have been on top form in the Premier League all season long and looked the likeliest candidate to win their 20th English top-division title, with defending champions Manchester City struggling and Arsenal having been inconsistent through the middle part of the season. On Sunday, with a 5-1 win over Tottenham, Slot managed to win the Premier League title in his first season with the Reds following his appointment as Klopp's successor at Anfield.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

At the end of last season, Klopp had been the one to introduce Slot as his successor at Anfield, and almost a year later, the Dutchman has paid back the faith with a Premier League title. During the celebrations, Slot also sang the famous 'Jurgen Klopp la la la' song to pay tribute to the German coach, who did so much for the Merseyside club. The former Feyenoord coach has now explained why he sang Klopp's name while celebrating the title win.

AFPWHAT SLOT SAID

Speaking to the media, Slot said: "[I chanted Klopp's name] because of what he did before I even arrived here. I think that is something not one manager ever did before. So that is what definitely helped me. But apart from that, he helped me even more by the team he left behind and the culture he left behind in that team.

"The quality the players have was obvious for everyone, but the culture of hard work, not only from the players but also from the staff members, has been incredible, and that is one of the reasons why we could achieve what we have achieved this season. For obvious reasons, I think it was a nice moment to thank him as well."

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

The Reds looked likely to challenge for the European treble this season, however, they will end the season with only the Premier League title. With Trent Alexander-Arnold set to leave Liverpool, Slot will have a lot of work this summer to fill the hole left by the departure of the right-back.

£570k-p/w Liverpool duo now on verge of both leaving for the same club

Liverpool could now be set to lose two of their most important players, with a report revealing the duo are now close to signing for the same club.

Reds could be set to lose their key players

There is still a great deal of doubt over the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk, with all three players able to leave for free at the end of the season if they don’t agree terms on a new deal.

Salah has been linked with a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League for quite some time, and Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol has insisted the move can still happen if the Egyptian pushes for it.

“When it comes to Salah and Saudi Arabia, it’s a case of once bitten, twice shy. The Saudis tried 18 months ago to sign Salah.

“Al Ittihad made a bid that was supposed to be worth up to £150m but that was rejected and Salah decided to stay at Liverpool. They’ve always been very careful since then about making another move for Salah.

“What we’ve consistently been told is if Salah wants to go to Saudi Arabia, his representatives need to get in touch and they will make it happen. They would love to have Salah playing in the Saudi Pro League.”

The 32-year-old has been outspoken about his disappointment that Liverpool have failed to offer suitable terms, and while Van Dijk has been more coy regarding his future, it looks like the Dutchman could also be set to leave the club.

That is according to reports from Spain, which suggest that Al-Hilal are now close to completing deals for Van Dijk and Salah, in what would be a remarkable coup for the Saudi side.

The duo are said to be ready to leave, indicating that the moves could be wrapped up very soon, with two of the Reds’ key players set to depart for free at the end of the season.

Why Salah and Van Dijk must stay

WIth Alexander-Arnold seemingly edging closer to a move to Real Madrid, it is vital that Liverpool keep hold of both Salah and Van Dijk beyond the end of the campaign. The situations surrounding the trio are proving to be an unwanted distraction, as the Reds push to win the Premier League title, and the latest twist in the saga will be unwelcome news.

Every Liverpool fan is well-aware of how vital the duo have been to the club’s success since the Jurgen Klopp era, and both players have underlined their importance this season.

Liverpool's MohamedSalah

Salah has already amassed an incredible 31 goal contributions in the Premier League this season, while the captain has been one of the most consistent performers in the squad, averaging a WhoScored match rating of 7.08.

The latest report indicates the duo, who rake in a combined £570k-per-week, are now very close to leaving the club, so FSG must intervene quickly by making suitable contract offers of their own, or they risk derailing Arne Slot’s side’s title bid.

Covid-positive Rohit faces race against time to play Edgbaston Test

Should Rohit miss the Test, Jasprit Bumrah will captain the team for the first time

Rohit has not yet been ruled out – Dravid

India captain Rohit Sharma is battling against the deadline to be available for the Edgbaston Test against England after testing positive for Covid-19 once again on Wednesday morning. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Rohit will undergo two further tests – one this evening and another on Thursday – before the Indian team management takes a final decision on his availability for the Test, which starts on Friday. Should Rohit miss the Test, Jasprit Bumrah will captain the side.Rohit, who tested positive on the second day of the warm-up match in Leicester last week, has been serving the five-day isolation as recommended by the UK government. Today was the fifth day, but Rohit was absent from India’s training session.”Rohit is being monitored by our medical team, he is not yet been ruled out,” head coach Rahul Dravid said. “Obviously, he needs to get the negative test to be available. So we will keep monitoring that, we’ve still got close to 36 hours to go. He will have a test later tonight and maybe one tomorrow morning as well. And then we’ll see.”Obviously, he’ll have to come out of that, and it’s really up to the medical team and sports science team to decide on that. We haven’t had a chance to see him, since he is in isolation. But we will keep monitoring the situation.”While there has been no official update from the BCCI on who will lead India in case Rohit doesn’t play in the Test, it is understood that Bumrah will take up the role. India didn’t nominate a vice-captain after KL Rahul, who was named Rohit’s deputy when the squad was picked in May, was ruled out having picked up a groin injury earlier this month.Bumrah was the vice-captain during India’s previous Test series, against Sri Lanka at home. He incidentally has never led in any form of cricket, so this will be his maiden captaincy stint. He will also become the first fast bowler to captain India since Kapil Dev.Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Sri Lanka series, Bumrah had said he would never “shy away” if he was given the opportunity to lead India. “If given an opportunity at any scenario, it would be an honour and I would never ever shy away from that, but it is something that I don’t go looking for,” Bumrah had said. Despite the lack of captaincy experience, Bumrah had said he remained confident of performing the leadership duties as he had grown in his role as a strike bowler both for India and at Mumbai Indians in the IPL.”Whatever role is asked of me, I would do it with the best ability. You are always a leader when you are a senior member of the team, so it’s just a post that comes with you. Basically, you try to help all the people in whatever capacity you can. Even in Mumbai Indians, you have got a lot of senior players but now I am one of the senior players as well, so you help the captain, you help everyone, you play the leadership role even when you are not asked to.”That’s how I look at it. I never want to [be the captain] just for personal satisfaction. It’s just a post, it’s just a name, you have to do your job and you have to help people in the best way you can.”‘We have got contingency plans’ – Dravid on captaincy scenario
If Bumrah walks out for the toss on Friday, he will be the eighth man to lead India since 2021. While Dravid agreed that is not the desired scenario, he felt that the coaching staff and players were well-equipped to handle that challenge.”It is what it is,” Dravid said. “When I took the job even I wouldn’t have predicted that there would have so many captains in the last six-seven months. That happens, right? In the times that we are living in, with Covid, there have been some unfortunate injuries to people. Even here, it is quite unfortunate what has happened to Rahul and Rohit in the last three weeks for us. And sometimes we’ve had to balance out the workloads of people. So it happens.”Of course, it is not something you envisage when you first start off, but if a situation arises then you react to that, you deal with that. And in spite of the number of captains we have had, we have played very good cricket over the last six to eight months. Yes, obviously the South Africa Test series was probably the one I would have liked to have won after going one-up. But even there I thought we were not outplayed, we were very close in a lot of those games. We had a few unfortunate injuries and some of our main players were probably not available for that Test series.”We are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that we don’t have to deal with these situations, but they seem to come up and we have to react. We are not fazed by it. We are clear about our communication with people. We know what is going to happen over the next few days. If something happens, we have got contingency plans and, within our group, within our team, we know what’s happening. That’s really important for us.”

Leeds could sign their next Archie Gray in "one of the best CMs" around

The last couple of transfer windows have been painful for Leeds United, but not from an incoming perspective, with the club doing phenomenal business with their new additions.

Daniel Farke has been reliant upon the 49ers’ recruitment, especially during the summer, as his side were ransacked after their failure to secure promotion from the Championship at the first attempt following relegation.

The Whites fell to a play-off final defeat against Southampton at Wembley, which resulted in numerous key players leaving in favour of a Premier League transfer.

Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville both departed to join Brighton and West Ham respectively, bringing in a staggering £65m – a bonkers figure for a second-tier side.

The aforementioned pair weren’t the only two high-profile names to depart Elland Road that window, with another young prospect leaving to move to England’s top flight.

Archie Gray’s time at Leeds United

Youngster Archie Gray broke through the Leeds academy last season, making himself an influential member of Farke’s squad despite his tender age of just 18 – featuring in a variety of roles.

The midfielder operated in his usual role upon his breakthrough, but injuries saw him shift to a right-back role, but it didn’t take away anything from his performance levels – often producing impressive displays within the backline.

Gray would make 52 appearances in all competitions during 2023/24, featuring in all but two league outings – showcasing his importance under the German despite his teenage years.

As a result, he was awarded the Championship’s Young Player of the Year award during his debut season, subsequently attracting major interest from various sides.

After failing to secure promotion, he appeared as though he would be heading to Brentford, but Tottenham came in at the 11th hour, securing a £40m deal for the talent – a superb deal for all parties involved.

Six months on from his departure, the Whites could be presented an opportunity to sign another version of the youngster this window, further boosting their promotion credentials.

The player who could be Leeds’ next Gray

Over the last couple of years, it feels as though Leeds United have been linked with a move to sign midfielder Lewis O’Brien – with January 2025 no different despite being just a week into the window.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien.

The former Huddersfield man joined Nottingham Forest back in the summer of 2022 after their promotion to the Premier League, but his move has been a disaster, failing to make the impact he would have envisioned upon the move.

O’Brien has been restricted to just 17 appearances for the Reds, spending various spells on loan at Middlesbrough, DC United and LAFC, with his temporary stint with the latter expiring at the start of the month.

As a result, Leeds have previously been mentioned with a potential move for the 26-year-old in the last couple of months but could face tough competition if they were to pursue a move for his signature.

Should a move be explored, he would be an excellent addition, potentially being the club’s new version of the departed Gray, with FBref ranking the Forest ace as a similar player to the academy graduate based on their stats in the Championship during 2023/24.

O’Brien, who was on loan at Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough, matched or bettered the youngster in various key areas, demonstrating what a superb addition he would be to their title ambitions.

The former Huddersfield man, who’s been dubbed “one of the best midfielders” by analyst Charlie Zazzera, registered more progressive passes and carries per 90 – highlighting his ability to get the ball into attacking areas and allowing the forwards to create carnage.

The Boro loanee also featured out of position at left-back when needed, but still managed to make more blocks and interceptions per 90 – showcasing his excellent box-to-box skill set, which could be vital to Farke between now and the end of the campaign.

Even if he were to move back to Yorkshire temporarily, he would be a superb addition who could provide the added quality to end their two-year Premier League exile.

The loss of Gray was understandably disappointing for the fanbase, with O’Brien providing a similar skill set to the youngster and filling the void left when he departed Elland Road.

Rashford’s departure from United in January came after a difficult period, with the English forward falling out of favour under Amorim due to attitude and commitment concerns. The change of environment has allowed him to enjoy his football once again, and he has played a pivotal role in Villa’s push for Champions League qualification with four assists in nine matches.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, according to the even with his impressive performances in the Midlands, it is becoming increasingly clear that his future does not lie at Old Trafford. Amorim has prioritised signing a new striker in the summer, reinforcing the belief that Rashford will be moved on permanently once the season concludes.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

With Amorim planning for the future, United view Rashford’s loan spell as an opportunity to increase his market value. They are reportedly seeking a permanent deal worth around £60 million ($76m), with Villa emerging as a leading candidate to secure his services. Rashford himself is believed to be keen on extending his stay in the West Midlands, viewing Villa Park as the ideal place to rejuvenate his career under Emery.

    WHAT NEXT FOR RASHFORD?

Rashford’s strong club form has also boosted his international prospects, earning him a recall to the England squad under Thomas Tuchel. He was handed a starting role in England’s World Cup qualifier against Albania, but despite his best efforts, he drew a blank at Wembley. With another qualifier against Latvia on Monday, the forward will be determined to make an impact and strengthen his claim for a regular spot in the national team in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup.

Mooney praises 'extremely crafty' Khatun after jailbreak

Australia batter also says “that kind of pressure thrown out at us leading into the semi-finals is absolutely critical for this group”

Australia’s Beth Mooney heaped praise on the “crafty” Bangladeshi attack, led by the “super impressive” Salma Khatun. This was after Khatun threatened to orchestrate an unlikely upset against title favourites Australia in a World Cup league fixture on Friday.Mooney made an unbeaten 66 to dig her side out from a precarious 70 for 5 in their chase of 136 in a truncated 43-overs-a-side clash. She acknowledged that the clinical approach of offspinner Khatun and the other Bangladeshi spinners made batting difficult for the vaunted Australian line-up at the windswept Basin Reserve in Wellington.Related

Injured Perry expected to be fit for semi-finals

“She was super impressive today,” Mooney said about Khatun, who wiped out Australia’s top order comprising Alyssa Healy, Meg Lanning, and Rachael Haynes during her performance of 9-0-3-23 . “Obviously, she took three poles up front, so whenever someone new came out, I sort of just said she was the main threat that we had to nullify.”Khatun, the former captain, opened the bowling with medium-pacer Jahanara Alam. First, she had Healy caught at deep square leg. Then Lanning was bowled for an eight-ball duck, before Haynes holed out to mid-off during her unbroken seven-over opening spell. The top-order collapse saw Australia, who made short work of two 270-plus chases heading into Friday’s fixture, reeling at 26 for 3 in 9.2 overs.”She’s a crafty spinner, got a lot of changes and can really settle on a length which is probably what we let her do a little bit today – settle on us a little bit more than we would normally, with that wind playing a factor as well,” Mooney said. “She’s extremely crafty. And she bowled really well today, so it’s no surprise to me that she’s been a very successful player for Bangladesh.”Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana echoed Mooney in her appreciation for Khatun’s impressive showing. “Salma bowled really well today,” Sultana said. “It was her show actually, trying to keep the pressure on the Aussie batters, so I’m really proud of her.”While wickets kept tumbling around her, second-drop Mooney took it upon herself to wrest control from the opposition attack with the calm approach that has underpinned her many rescue acts for Australia. She said staying calm was particularly important amid a swell of energy and competitiveness the Bangladeshis had, which resulted in five quick wickets.Beth Mooney made an unbeaten 66 to dig her side out from a precarious 70 for 5•ICC via Getty Images

“I think just taking the sting out of… obviously Bangladesh being pretty highly emotional at that point, having taken two or three wickets in a row,” Mooney said. “We know that sort of… what teams get like when they’re on a roll and they’re taking a few wickets. They ride on that emotion a little bit.””So, I sort of just knew that we needed to build a partnership somewhere along the way to take the sting out of that a little bit, and come home strong, but obviously, we lost a couple more wickets than we would have liked but I thought Belsy (Annabel Sutherland) came out and played a really mature innings.”Asked if Australia, who head into the semi-finals with an all-win record from their seven league-stage outings, had anticipated a challenge so stiff from a side they had never previously faced in the format, Mooney said, “We talk about it within our group that when teams come up against us, they find another level and we have to always try and match that.”Obviously, Bangladesh had us under a lot of pressure early in that batting innings with how well they bowled and the fields that they set as well. They’re really crafty bowlers, they know what they’re doing and know how to put us under the pump.”Having run several other teams close in this World Cup, and even won a game against Pakistan, Mooney said Bangladesh will only get better as they get more game time, especially through the 2022-2025 ICC Women’s ODI Championship.”They, hopefully, are going to play a lot more cricket in the next World Cup cycle leading into the next edition in 2025,” Mooney said. “So, it would be just about learning and making sure whatever situation you’re in, that you learn from it and enjoy it. These experiences don’t last forever and you’re a long time retired. So just the opportunity to be out there running around – you can’t say no to.”Mooney also underlined the difficulty Australia faced in overcast, windy conditions could help them prepare better for the knockouts, should they play their semi-final in Wellington next week.”Obviously, we’re not sure if we’re going to play the semi-final here in Wellington or in Christchurch, so we could be thrown in those conditions again,” Mooney said. “If we do play the semi-final here and obviously, with the late start as well, and not losing too many overs, with no lights being here in Wellington, it can make for quite a dark second innings once we’re out there.”So, to be put under some pressure and playing those conditions and be able to learn from it and have that kind of pressure thrown out at us leading into the semi-final is absolutely critical for this group.”

Rodgers hit gold with "phenomenal" Celtic ace who’s similar to a £100m star

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was backed by the board in the recent summer transfer window, as several big-money recruits were brought in to bolster the squad.

Danish midfielder Matt O’Riley was sold to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, whilst the likes of Hyeon-gyu Oh, Mikey Johnston, and Tomoki Iwata were all cashed in on.

The Scottish giants smashed their record transfer fee by paying a reported £11m to sign Arne Engels from Augsburg to bolster their midfield options.

Celtic also reportedly paid a fee of £8.5m, potentially rising to £9.5m, to Norwich City for Adam Idah, and £5m to Sheffield United for Auston Trusty.

How Celtic's big-money signings have performed

The Hoops have decided to invest in young talent and, with that, there has to be an acceptance that inexperienced players will not be perfect right away.

Engels has produced three goals and six assists in 17 appearances for the Glasgow giants in all competitions to date, but has also lost the majority (52%) of his duels in the Scottish Premiership.

Idah, meanwhile, has scored eight goals in all competitions but has failed to convince Rodgers that he deserves to start week-in-week-out, with just five starts in the Premiership and the Champions League combined.

Trusty, on the other hand, arrived in the prime years of his career at the age of 26 and has started all eight of his appearances in the Premiership, as well as four of his five outings in the Champions League.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Rodgers has hit the jackpot with the former Sheffield United man, whose performances in Europe this season have earned him a comparison with Arsenal star William Saliba.

How Auston Trusty comares to William Saliba

The USA international is listed as one of the most similar players to the French colossus in the 2024/25 Champions League on FBref, due to their respective statistics.

As you can see above, they are not identical players but they are similar in what they offer to their sides in possession, with their pass completion rate, passes attempted, Expected Assisted Goals, and touches.

Saliba is reportedly valued at more than £100m by Arsenal, amid interest from Real Madrid and PSG, and that speaks to how impressive Trusty has been in Europe for the Hoops, as his performances have been comparable to those of the France international’s.

The American titan has also won 64% of his duels across seven outings in the Premiership, keeping five clean sheets, for the Hoops so far this season.

These statistics, and the similarities to Saliba, show that Rodgers has hit the jackpot with the £5m signing of the former Arsenal prospect, who has slotted straight in and hit the ground running with excellent performances domestically and in Europe.

Head and Khawaja will first meet in Adelaide on Tuesday for a Sheffield Shield match, before a domestic one-day game follows. Beyond that, selectors can also use an intrasquad game in Queensland at the start of December to settle on the No. 5 spot. The in-form Khawaja last played for Australia in the 2019 Ashes, while Head’s last chance came at the Boxing Day Test last year after five innings below 40.Head averaged 68.69 for South Australia last summer and has started this season with a Shield century and one-day double-ton. But that form was punctuated by a rough in county cricket, after arriving at Sussex on the back of a four-week holiday.Travis Head was prolific in the Sheffield Shield last season•Getty Images”I was probably chasing my tail a bit,” Head said. “But I’ve experienced a lot [since last playing for Australia], gone to England. Been in and out the team. Dealt with those things, come back been stronger, been better. I’ve been consistent over the last 12 or 18 months. So I hope [I am a better player].”And I hope next week I’m a better player than this week. I’m working hard and continuing that and fingers crossed.”Head can also see other advantages out of his England jaunt. He worked closely with England quick Ollie Robinson, who has taken 28 wickets in his five Tests since debuting in June. His 196-centimetre frame has also seen the right-armer compared to Josh Hazlewood, with Australia’s wickets expected to suit him.”He is the standout that I’ve probably seen the most of,” Head said. “He’s probably going to be their banker. He was unbelievable for them during the summer. He was probably their go-to man.”A lot of people have liked him to Hoff [Hazlewood], with a slightly taller and slightly harder length. He had a lot of success here in the A tours a few years ago.”
