Newcastle Eyeing £76k p/w Midfield Summer Addition

Newcastle United hold a summer interest in the AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali as they look to bolster Eddie Howe's squad.

How old is Sandro Tonali?

The Toon now have Champions League football to plan for this summer and it seems as if PIF are keen to make the most of their European status.

Indeed, the Magpies have already been linked with a potentially sensational deal for the Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella.

However, reports since the story broke have casted some doubt over a potential deal for the Italian with his asking price believed to be well above the reported £50m offered.

But it seems as if Dan Ashworth may have turned his attention to the other side of Milan with another midfielder who plays his football at the San Siro.

It is now believed the Toon hold a strong interest in Tonali this summer with a new midfielder seemingly on the radar for Howe.

There have also been links to the likes of Scott McTominay ahead of the summer transfer window, however, it seems as if Newcastle are looking to some of Europe's biggest names.

And speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has claimed the Tyneside club are keen on bringing the 23-year-old Italian to St. James' Park:

"What we can say guys is, is that it's a reality. Newcastle like Sandro Tonali, Newcastle have Sandro Tonali in their list."

"To convince Sandro Tonali is going to be absolutely difficult, same as it was for Nicolo Barella. So this is the situation, let's see how the conversation will go. But for sure, this is a situation around Newcastle and Tonali. Interest, yes. Intention to bid too but the reality is that the player's side is absolutely crucial for Barella and for Tonali."

How much does Sandro Tonali earn?

The Italian has only just turned 23 years old but has become one of Milan's most-used players at the San Siro having made 30 starts in Serie A alone last season (via Transfermarkt).

On top of that, the Italian midfielder made 12 starts in their Champions League campaign as Milan made their way to the semi-finals.

Despite being still so young, Tonali has already racked up 130 appearances for Milan in total which only indicates how important he has become to this side.

And this may not bode well for the Toon if they are looking to land Tonali this summer for a reasonable fee given he still has four years remaining on his current deal at the San Siro.

Reports have suggested the Toon are looking to lodge a bid worth in the region of £50m, however, as Romano has claimed, that will be nowhere near enough.

And with that in mind, it will be intriguing to see how much it could potentially take to see the £76k-per-week midfielder prised away from the San Siro.

Aston Villa Could Sign Kamara Upgrade In £45m Destroyer

Aston Villa ended their 2022/23 campaign in a successful fashion as they finished seventh in the Premier League and secured Europa Conference League football.

Unai Emery has led the club to European football in his first season at the helm, despite not being in charge for the entire year, and now has his first summer transfer window to tinker with his squad.

Last month, Football Insider reported that the Villans are keen on a deal to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips and are not dissuaded by the player's public intention to remain at The Etihad.

This suggests that the latest report from The Telegraph, which claims that Newcastle are frustrated in their efforts to sign the England ace due to his commitment to Pep Guardiola's side, does not change anything for Villa and their own pursuit.

Would Kalvin Phillips be a success at Aston Villa?

The enforcer, who joined City from Leeds United for £45m last year, could be a big success for the Villans as his form for Leeds in the past suggests that there is a big upgrade on current star Boubacar Kamara that could be unearthed.

Phillips, who ex-England boss Steve McClaren hailed as a "destroyer", only started 20 Premier League matches in the last two seasons combined for City and the Whites but his first campaign in the top flight with his boyhood club showcased his ability at that level.

In 2020/21, the Englishman averaged a hugely impressive Sofascore rating of 7.21 across 29 appearances, made 4.2 tackles and interceptions and 1.2 key passes per game. The midfield battler displayed his quality in and out of possession as he regularly cut out opposition attacks whilst also being able to create chances for his teammates in the final third.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for Phillips to be a big upgrade on Kamara, who averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.79 and made 3.2 tackles and interceptions and 0.3 key passes per game for the Villans in the Premier League this season.

The City man also averaged more progressive passes per 90 in 20/21 (5.08) than the Frenchman this season (4.25) suggesting that he has the ability to progress the ball more often to get his team into better positions to attack the other team.

Emery has also proven that he has the coaching ability to get the best out of players who were previously out of sorts, with his work with Ollie Watkins this term fine evidence.

The striker had scored just two goals in 14 Premier League matches prior to the World Cup break but went on to score 13 goals and provide three assists in 23 games after the tournament under the Spaniard's management.

This suggests that the ex-Arsenal tactician could repeat a similar trick with Phillips and get him back to his best in the middle of the park.

If Villa sign the Manchester City midfielder and are able to help him rediscover his form then he could be a huge upgrade on Kamara.

Sri Lanka Cricket opposes two-tier Test system

Sri Lanka Cricket has outlined its strong opposition to the proposed two-tier Test system, claiming that it “can’t see any benefit for Sri Lankan cricket, the game, or the players”. SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala also voiced concerns over the financial ramifications of a potential tiered system, and believed the current path towards full membership and Test status for Associate sides was adequate.

ACC set to move headquarters to Colombo

Colombo is set to be the new home of the Asian Cricket Council, SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala has said. The ACC is currently based in Singapore, but its executive committee is said to have supported SLC’s bid to move its headquarters to Colombo, though Dubai and Mauritius were also considered.
“We offered to have the ACC headquarters in Colombo, and the ACC executive committee comprising of four Full Members and the ICC Associate Member representative, unanimously supported Sri Lanka as the venue to be the next ACC head office,” Sumathipala said.
The relocation must be ratified at the ACC AGM on August 21, which will be held in Colombo as well. Sumathipala, the present deputy speaker of parliament, said SLC had asked the country’s government to offer tax breaks to the ACC, in order to attract its headquarters to Colombo.
“We made about three submissions to the SL government and the finance minister, for all the terms to meet all the tax concessions requested by ACC.”

The proposal to split Test cricket into two tiers – with seven nations in tier one, and five, including two new Test nations, in the second tier – was mooted at the ICC’s annual conference, in Edinburgh. BCB president Nazmul Hassan had said Bangladesh was the only country to oppose the proposed system, but SLC officials said Sri Lanka was one of two boards in opposition. In any case, Sumathipala spoke strongly against a move from the status quo, in which ten nations have full membership and Test status. Sri Lanka is currently seventh in the Test rankings with 85 points, ahead of West Indies, in eighth position with 65.”Sri Lanka Cricket has decided not to support two-tier Test cricket as we have decided it’s detrimental to SLC and for its future,” Sumathipala said. “We feel that to make it a top seven – you are virtually relegating the bottom three to a different level.”The revenue-sharing details within the proposed system have not yet been worked out, but there has been the suggestion that all matches within the proposed structure be sold in one block, as part of a centralised broadcasting agreement. Another option might be for the ICC to pay a competition grant, which would cover the costs of every nation’s Test fixtures within the structure. Sumathipala, however, was skeptical of how such a financial model might work.”We believe that if you are a Full Member, there can’t be two tiers. One of the reasons is to maintain sustainability of the economy of cricket. If India goes to eighth position, what happens?”The primary aims of a two-tier system are to provide stronger context for Test matches, a merit-based promotion and relegation system, and to create a clear pathway to Test status for Associate nations. SLC had helped lobby for Bangladesh to be granted Test status, in 2000, and Sumathipala said that pathway remained available and adequate for any aspiring Test side.”If someone wants to come up – they can come up, that’s no problem. That’s the way Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka came up. But that doesn’t mean that anyone should go down. If you want to take the Test level that is a different effort that you must make. We did that for Bangladesh and it’s a very successful story.”The board did, however, support a separate but equally radical change to the game – that of four-day Tests. The suggestion that Tests should ideally be played over four days consisting of 100 overs each has been around for some time, and had recently been advanced by ECB chairman Colin Graves.”We strongly believe that in years to come we should encourage four-day Test cricket,” Sumathipala said. “We believe it’s going to be strong and effective. With the pink ball coming up and day-night facilities coming in, you can easily extend the day another 45 minutes and play a four-day Test comprising of 400 overs.”

Man United Could Ditch Sabitzer For £40m Monster

Manchester United have enjoyed a fine first season under Erik ten Hag, but it does seem like they are running out of steam as the campaign reaches its conclusion.

Back-to-back losses against West Ham United and Brighton and Hove Albion had thrown their top-four finish into doubt, which given how comfortable they once looked to bring Champions League football back to Old Trafford, would have been a travesty.

However, having since halted that mini-collapse against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Red Devils are once again back in the driving seat ahead of their rivals Liverpool.

Given the success of this debut year, the Dutch tactician will likely already be looking ahead as to how he can bolster this team that has served him well. Admittedly, the main cause for concern would be to add to the depth surrounding the starting XI, as they have been hamstrung by numerous injuries in various positions.

Marcel Sabitzer may have deputised well, having joined in January amidst Christian Eriksen's injury, but the Austrian is no match for some of the experienced alternatives this huge club could attract.

marcel-sabitzer-manchester-united

Despite that, the on-loan Bayern Munich maestro has made his intentions clear: "I found my place here. Now I know the Premier League and can say there's nothing better."

What's the latest Man United transfer news?

The recent news – as per Football Insider – could spell bad news for Sabitzer with it said that an offer is now being readied to sign Mateo Kovacic in a potential £30m deal.

It was previously suggested that the Red Devils were merely keeping tabs on the Croat, although it now appears as though they are set to step up their interest.

United's hierarchy seem to think they can definitely sign the midfielder, but only if they can convince the selling club to slash their price tag.

How has Mateo Kovacic played for Chelsea?

To claim the 29-year-old entering his prime years could prove a fine coup for Ten Hag, adding a true winner into his squad alongside the likes of Casemiro and Raphael Varane.

The Blues' midfielder is the proud victor of four Champions Leagues amongst numerous other trophies, yet this season has struggled in what has been a horrid transitional period for the west London club.

However, just last year saw the former Real Madrid star maintain a 7.20 average rating in the league, scoring twice, assisting five times and recording 1.1 key passes and two tackles per game, via Sofascore. He truly was imperious, and this is form he has largely maintained throughout his whole career at Stamford Bridge.

It even led Jurgen Klopp to praise the World Cup finalist back in 2018, questioning how to defend the midfielder, when he is "running like a Formula One car".

Although Sabitzer has deputised well, with three goals and one assist in all competitions, the experience of Kovacic, as it has proven with Eriksen, would be vital.

The latter has quietly been one of the Premier League's most consistently high-performing stars in recent years, and should he prove to be a viable option, the decision of who to sign becomes a no-brainer. Indeed, Ten Hag must surely send Sabitzer packing if this move comes to fruition.

Tottenham Hotspur Interested In "Brilliant" 47 y/o Manager

Tottenham Hotspur "really like" Graham Potter, having gone in for him during his time at Brighton & Hove Albion, according to journalist Paul Brown.

What's the latest Tottenham manager news?

There are multiple people still in the running for the Tottenham job, with Burnley boss Vincent Kompany now said to be "ready to listen" to offers, having now emerged as the club's preferred choice to replace Antonio Conte.

Kompany may have replaced Julian Nagelsmann as Spurs' top target, as BILD claim the former Bayern Munich boss has declined the opportunity to engage in talks, instead preferring to speak with Chelsea.

Alasdair Gold has recently claimed he would be shocked if the Lilywhites do not consider appointing Potter, as they did in 2021, with the journalist also adding that Arne Slot and Ruben Amorim will be options this summer.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Brown confirmed the Tottenham hierarchy are still big fans of the former Chelsea boss, who would be available without compensation, indicating they could make a move for him this summer.

The journalist said: "They really like Potter and they went for him in quite a big way when he was at Brighton. But, he basically turned them down and felt he could do better.

"He felt if he was to leave Brighton, he and his staff would only go to a top tier club that could spend money and compete in the Champions League every year."

Should Tottenham appoint Graham Potter?

Interestingly, the former Chelsea boss reportedly wanted to sign Harry Kane last year, so he will certainly like the idea of joining up with him potentially at Spurs.

It is fair to say the 47-year-old did not reach the heights he would've wanted to during his time at Stamford Bridge, averaging just 1.42 points-per game, leaving the Blues 11th in the Premier League table upon his departure.

However, the Solihull-born manager has a proven aptitude for being able to build teams, having taken Brighton from a 15th-place finish in his first season in charge, up to ninth in his final full campaign with the club.

Chelsea manager Graham Potter looks dejected after the match

Hailed as a "brilliant coach" by members of the media, the former Brighton boss now has experience managing a 'big six' club, which could stand him in good stead upon his return to management, whenever that may be.

That said, it would not be a wise decision for Spurs to appoint a manager with a poor track record at the top level, and they should focus on targets who have won major honours, including Nagelsmann, despite the recent setback, as he has won three trophies and is considered a "progressive" young manager.

Fabrizio Romano confirms Arsenal very interested in Declan Rice

Fabrizio Romano has claimed Arsenal are still interested in signing Declan Rice this summer.

The Lowdown: Arsenal will look to strengthen in the summer

Earlier this year, Arsenal were credited as one of the frontrunners to make a move for Rice as he was seemingly interested in the Gunners’ project and what Mikel Arteta has been able to build at the Emirates Stadium.

Rice has long been linked with a move away from West Ham United,

with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea also said to be keen on the England international, but given they’ve recently signed Casemiro and Enzo Fernandez respectively, Arsenal could now be in pole position.

The Gunners could be on their way to lifting their first Premier League trophy since 2004 under Arsene Wenger, but to be continuously playing at the right end of the table for all of the top honours, including the Champions League, this squad will need to be improved upon in the transfer market.

The Latest: Rice will leave West Ham at the end of the season

Romano has been speaking about Rice’s future on his YouTube channel, where he confirmed the midfielder will be looking to leave this summer amid Arsenal’s continued interest in the star.

He said: “Many of you are always asking me about him, because I can confirm it’s true that many clubs still love Declan Rice; he is super appreciated on the market.

“Arsenal, internally, they really appreciate the player and discussed Declan Rice as one of the players they like in that position.

“At the moment, nothing has been discussed with West Ham, and a lot will depend on West Ham how much they will ask [for] in the summer.

“Summer 2023 is going to be the opportunity for Declan Rice to try something different.”

The Verdict: Arteta could land gem in Rice

If Arsenal were able to add someone of Rice’s experience, ability and pedigree in the game to their midfield alongside players such as Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka, it would be a monumental piece of business.

Rice is a very experienced midfield general despite his age, which can only be a good sign of what his potential could be for this Arsenal side thriving under Arteta compared to being part of a struggling West Ham outfit.

However, he certainly won’t come cheap, with David Moyes previously claiming that Rice would cost any potential suitor a British transfer record fee – and this would go well beyond the most Arsenal have ever paid for a single player, so this deal could test Edu’s resolve.

‘Frustrating’ ‘Same old story’ - West Ham fans fume at Moyes decision

West Ham United fans have been left fuming by David Moyes’ treatment of Gianluca Scamacca after the striker was once again benched against Aston Villa at the weekend.

The Lowdown: Scamacca struggling

Despite recovering from a knee injury, Scamacca has been unable to break back into the West Ham starting XI, being benched by Moyes for the last four Premier League games.

The manager explained the striker’s absence by claiming that his ‘physical data’ is not at the level required, while also adding that Maxwel Cornet is able to ‘get in behind’ the opposition more often.

It remains to be seen whether the forward is able to force his way back into contention, but in the meantime West Ham fans have not reacted well to Moyes’ latest decision…

The Latest: West Ham fans react

Taking to Twitter after the latest snub, the West Ham faithful pointed out their manager’s disappointing record with strikers, with the likes of Sebastian Haller also failing to be a success at the London Stadium.

They said:

“Moyes has zero excuse with Scamacca. He was inactive for 2/3 windows when we were desperate for a striker because he wanted the “right” one. He got his man & doesn’t know how to use him, or man manage him. Haller at least wasn’t his signing. Scamacca is all on Moyes.” – @ben_personal

“Problem with Moyes is he’s now had Haller & Scamacca both 40m pound strikers & he doesn’t know how to use them, you need to play higher up the pitch & get players around them, that’s how they played before we bought them. So frustrating.” – @WayneBarwick1

“It’s the same old story with Moyes. Scamacca isn’t going improve and get up to scratch w/o the game time to do so, he’s shown glimpses but that’s all.” – @joeydbo_

“My only analysis of the Scamacca situation is that he’s probably told Moyes his playing style doesn’t work when he’s isolated up front on his own. So instead of trying to adapt, he just leaves him on the bench. Just like he did Haller! If you don’t play Moyesball, you’re out.” – @northwesthammer

“Haller and Scamacca notice a trend here with Moyes? He ruins every striker that comes to our club who were proven elsewhere.”  – @justinmortlake1

“As soon as Moyes gets the chop, he will flourish. Once again we bought a player without actually understanding what type of player he is. If you stick Scamacca and Ings together and we would not be in our current situation…but Moyes would never do that.” – @WestHamViews09

The Verdict: Must improve

While it is true that Moyes does not have the best of records with strikers, the 24-year-old was struggling even when he was given a consistent run in the first team, scoring just three times in 16 Premier League appearances.

That said, Danny Ings is hardly setting the world alight either at the moment, registering just ten touches of the ball despite being on the field for 86 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.

Scamacca has undoubtedly failed to live up to his £35.5m price tag up to this point, but with Ings offering very little in the way of attacking threat, he should be given another chance to prove himself.
