Nottingham Forest plot Josh Bowler bid

Nottingham Forest are planning another bid for a young Championship star…

What’s the word?

According to journalist Alan Nixon, speaking on his Patreon, the Tricky Trees had their initial £2.5m bid knocked back and are now plotting another £3m bid.

Blackpool are holding out to their £4m valuation, so it remains to be seen as to whether Steve Cooper forks out the extra cash to secure the signing.

The 23-year-old does only have one year left on his current deal, however, which could see Forest wait it out.

Imagine him & Lingard

With the one year that Forest expect to have Jesse Lingard for, Bowler could learn so much under his tutelage.

With 168 Premier League appearances, as well as plenty of games in the Champions League and Europa League, his vast experience besides the youthful exuberance of the Blackpool man could be a perfect combination behind the speed of Brennan Johnson or the brute force of Taiwo Awoniyi.

Meanwhile, last season for the Seasiders Bowler scored seven times and assisted a further three as they finished comfortably mid-table.

This season, however, he seems to really be exerting himself upon the league. A 7.03 average SofaScore rating is indicative of his explosive start to the campaign, whilst his ability to be a goal threat has started to shine through.

He is averaging 4.0 shots per game, whilst also boasting a dribble success rate of 56%.

This is caused to explain why he was labelled “class at football” by Tangerines reporter Sean McGinlay, capable of producing “special moments” for his side. The carrying through of his form from last season into this outlines a consistency of these special moments.

If Lingard could recapture the form he found whilst on loan at West Ham United, perhaps these two could actually act as the main goal scorers for Cooper’s side.

During that spell, the 29-year-old netted nine times and assisted five in just 16 appearances.

Although Bowler may not instantly be a huge hit at the City Ground, there is no doubting that alongside Lingard he would have a much greater chance at fulfilling his immense potential.

If they could strike up an instant partnership, they could carry Forest away from a relegation battle with a flurry of goals.

Rangers: Alfredo Morelos injury boost

Rangers have been handed a huge lift ahead of their Premiership clash on Saturday afternoon…

What’s the word?

Speaking ahead of that fixture, as per the club’s official Twitter channel, Ibrox manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has revealed that striker Alfredo Morelos is in line to make his long-awaited return from injury this weekend.

Asked about the fitness of his squad heading into the home clash against Kilmarnock, the Dutchman stated: “The squad is looking good. The biggest change will be Alfredo will be in the squad. He’s been training really hard with the team and he’s ready to be in the squad for tomorrow and hopefully play some minutes as well.”

The Colombia international has been absent since sustaining a thigh injury in April, with that issue ultimately ruling him out of the final few weeks of last season.

Massive boost

Amid what will already be a frenzied atmosphere at Ibrox as supporters return for the first home game of the season for the Light Blues, news of the 26-year-old’s return will only add to that bubbling excitement, with the crowd surely desperate to see the former HJK Helsinki man back in action.

While there are still lingering doubts over the £11.7m-rated marksman’s future in Glasgow with less than 12 months remaining on his existing deal, for now those of a Rangers persuasion will simply be delighted to see him fit and firing again, with Van Bronckhorst’s side having sorely missed the talismanic figure of late.

Tuesday night’s Champions League defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise in particular, showcased the void that the £33k-per-week menace leaves behind when he is unavailable, with summer arrival Antonio Colak having proven to be a “waste of time” in Belgium, according to pundit Mark Hateley.

In truth, while seeing the 11-cap brute in action this weekend would be a welcome development, the onus will be to ensure that Morelos is raring to go in the second leg of their European tie in midweek, with Van Bronckhorst seemingly in need of his talisman to help overturn the two-goal deficit.

The odds are stacked against them, although if ever there were a man to pull a rabbit out of the hat for Rangers, it is ‘The Buffalo’. The 5 foot 10 titan has been prolific for the club in recent years, with his tally for the Light Blues now standing at 113 goals in 224 games in all competitions.

The belief will be that he can add to that haul against Kilmarnock this weekend if he features, gearing him up for the pivotal European encounter on Tuesday evening.

After the disappointment in Belgium earlier this week, Morelos’ return could be the welcome boost that the Ibrox faithful need.

Leeds: Orta dealt Toney transfer blow

Leeds United have been dealt a blow in their bid to bring Ivan Toney to Elland Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by iNews, who claim that, despite the centre-forward being linked with a move to all of Leeds, Manchester United, Newcastle United and West Ham United in recent weeks, Brentford are reluctant to part with the 26-year-old ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

However, the report does goes on to state that, should an offer of £40m be submitted for the former Peterborough United striker this summer, the Bees’ owner, Matthew Benham, could be tempted into cashing in on the Northampton-born hitman in the current transfer window.

“Underrated”

Considering just how impressive Toney was for Brentford last season, it is not difficult to why Victor Orta would be keen to bring the forward to Elland Road this summer, nor it is hard to understand why Thomas Frank is desperate to retain the services of the 26-year-old ahead of the new season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Indeed, over his 33 Premier League appearances in 2021/22, the £31.5m-rated talent was in devastating form for the Bees, scoring 12 goals, registering five assists and creating ten big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.7 shots, making 1.3 key passes and winning 8.6 duels – at a success rate of 53% – per game.

These returns saw the £21k-per-week striker who Rob Blanchette labelled “underrated” and Layth Yousif claimed “will play for England” average a quite astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.31, not only ranking him as Brentford’s second-best performer in the league but also as the 15th-best player in the top flight has a whole last time out.

As such, while £40m is undoubtedly an extremely large fee to pay for a striker with just one full Premier League campaign under his belt, considering the output Toney proved he can deliver in the league last season, the 26-year-old could well be worth this hefty fee for the Whites – as we would not bet against the target man going on to become an England international in 2022/23, as Yousif suggests.

Rangers set for Dylan Reid swoop

Rangers are eyeing a move for 17-year-old Dylan Reid as Giovanni van Bronckhorst looks to bring more talent to Ibrox.

What’s the news?

That’s according to the Daily Record, who report that Rangers are ready to make a six-figure move for the St Mirren starlet as the Ibrox side continues to source the brightest talent in the country to add to their squad.

The Gers face competition from Benfica and Premier League side Crystal Palace for the youngster’s signature, however.

The report states that the Paisley outfit are only likely to sell if a significant deal is made with a host of add-ons built into the deal.

He can be Jack 2.0

Rangers have come to life recently in this summer’s transfer market following a slow start which began to frustrate the supporters. 16-year-old Zak Lovelace has agreed to join the Ibrox club before a move for Croatian striker Antonio Colak was sealed.

Van Bronckhorst looks set to continue his business by securing a move for Reid, and he could well see the player as a younger version of Ryan Jack.

Reid made history in March 2021 by becoming St Mirren’s youngest ever debutant, ironically against Rangers, in a 3-0 defeat, and having spent time on loan at Queens Park during the latter stages of last season, could be signed by the Gers to bolster their B team squad.

Despite playing slightly deeper than Jack, operating mainly in a defensive midfield position, the players share similar traits. The Dutchman might see a potential heir to the Scotland midfielder in the youngster. The 17-year-old ability to protect the defence and win the ball back effectively is comparable to Jack and he could get even better learning under the Scotland international.

Craig Mulholland, the head of the Rangers academy, watched Reid as St Mirren lost to Northampton Town on Wednesday and it appears the Ibrox side are ready to make an official approach to St Mirren.

He might not be ready to be thrown straight into the Rangers’ first team, but Reid looks like an exciting talent that could make the club a fortune in a few years’ time.

Leeds: Outlet drops Otavio claim

Leeds United have had a bid rejected for FC Porto midfielder Otavio, according to Portuguese newspaper Record (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown: Orta not messing around

Having already added Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen and Marc Roca to Jesse Marsch’s squad this summer, Director of Football Victor Orta is seemingly showing no signs of letting up with the search for reinforcements.

Whilst some of the additions over the coming weeks could prove to be replacements for highly sought-after duo Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, the Whites are certainly getting their ranks in order in a timely fashion.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-45/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Now, it appears as though the Elland Road hierarchy have pinpointed their next target in the shape of 27-year-old Porto star Otavio…

The latest: Bid made

As per Record, transcribed by SW, Leeds have seen a €30milion (£25million) offer to sign the seven-cap Portugal international turned down.

It’s claimed that there is an ‘indication’ that Porto would only sell Otavio should a €60million (£51million) release clause be met, having recently also cashed in on the move that saw Luis Diaz arrive at Liverpool.

The report states that Leeds are looking to add ‘reinforcements of weight’ after a disappointing 2021/22 campaign. They apparently view the man recently lauded for an ‘exciting’ standout display for Portugal against Turkey as a candidate to strengthen Marsch’s options.

The verdict: Not at that price

Predominantly operating as a right-winger, Otavio scored five times and provided 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions last season, earning an outstanding 7.48 Sofascore rating – the fourth highest in the Portuguese top-flight – whilst winning 7.4 duels, making 2.3 key passes and successfully completing 1.1 dribbles on average per league outing to showcase a well-rounded game.

However, despite this eye-catching form and excellent versatility which has seen the Portuguese ace operate in numerous positions across the midfield and frontline, spending the mooted £51million release clause on this deal would be a huge gamble from Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani.

Albeit the Whites will recoup a major profit on Raphinha should the Brazilian eventually leave, we feel that money can be reinvested in smarter ways than spending big on Otavio, despite the midfielder’s obvious talents.

Leeds United: Every No.9 at Elland Road now ranked on Premier League goals

Leeds United’s No.9s during their Premier League years have usually performed exceptionally well. Out of the eight who have worn the shirt, only two players have failed to hit double figures.

The current holder of the shirt is Patrick Bamford, who has every chance of keeping the No.9 jersey in the coming years provided he puts his injury problems behind him.

The Englishman scored an impressive 17 goals in his first season playing in the top flight at Elland Road. A dip last season due to what felt like an injury curse may lead many to forget just how good a goalscorer Bamford is, but next season will hopefully provide some timely reminders.

With Raphinha potentially on his way out of the exit door this summer, the responsibility will fall on Bamford once again to find the goals in this Leeds side. Under Jesse Marsch, the striker will hope to put his injury troubles behind and kick on once more.

Those before Bamford, if you cast your minds back, didn’t have a bad time in front of goal, either, as revealed by TransferMarkt.

Every Leeds No.9 ranked on Premier League goals scored

Noel Whelan – 0 goals

Ian Rush – 3 goals

Tony Yeboah – 12 goals

Lee Chapman – 15 goals

Patrick Bamford – 19 goals

Brian Deane – 27 goals

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink – 34 goals

Mark Viduka – 59 goals

As you can see, it is Mark Viduka who leads the way for Premier League goals scored by Leeds United number nines. The Australian did everything he could to keep Leeds afloat, but couldn’t do enough to prevent the drop in the end, as the Yorkshire club suffered relegation in 2004.

Behind Viduka is Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. The forward enjoyed an affluent spell at Elland Road before making a big-money move to Chelsea, netting on 34 occasions.

Brian Deane provided a healthy return of 27 strikes, while Lee Chapman only featured for Leeds during one Premier League season and Yeboah’s Elland Road spell was explosive but shortlived.

The only real flops in the list of number nines are Noel Whelan and, surprisingly, Ian Rush, although the Liverpool legend was very much in the latter stages of his career when he turned out for the Whites.

Now, the responsibility lies with Bamford. 35 goals away from Viduka, can the former Chelsea forward become the most successful number nine in Leeds United’s Premier League history?

He’s got a long way to go but at 28 years of age, the England international still has a few years left to try and whittle down his predecessor’s tally.

Everton interested in Oleksandr Zinchenko

Everton are said to be looking at signing Manchester City man Oleksandr Zinchenko in the summer transfer window, and the Ukraine captain could be a superb addition to Frank Lampard’s side.

What’s the word?

According to journalist James Benge, a number of Premier League sides including Arsenal and Everton have the 25-year-old on their radar ahead of next season.

Since joining City from Ufa in 2016, the versatile midfielder has gone on to make 128 appearances for the Citizens, contributing two goals and 12 assists, predominantly from left-back.

However, Zinchenko is equally adept in midfield and showed his quality with a superb performance in Ukraine’s 3-1 win over Scotland on Wednesday night.

As per SofaScore, he earned an 8/10 rating for his display, which ranked him as the best player on the pitch from both sides.

The City star registered an 87% pass accuracy and played three key passes, one of which found Artem Dovbyk who scored Ukraine’s third goal with the last kick of the game to seal a World-Cup qualifying showdown with Wales on Sunday.

Lampard would love him

According to WhoScored, last season saw Zinchenko register an impressive 7.05/10 rating for his performances in the Premier League, as he helped Pep Guardiola’s side to the Premier League title.

As regular captain of Ukraine, the £22.5m-rated man would offer Lampard some vital leadership, while his versatility could also be significant for the Toffees next season as they look to improve on what was so nearly a catastrophic 2021/22 campaign.

Although he has often been a bit-part player for the Citizens in his time at the club, his influence cannot be underestimated, and he played a key part in City’s final day turnaround against Aston Villa.

The Athletic’s Villa correspondent Gregg Evans was full of praise for his performance on Twitter, writing:

“Zinchenko has been so good for MCFC since coming on. The composure he shows in the final third is frightening.”

Not only would the 25-year-old offer Everton plenty on the pitch, but he could also be a great mentor for fellow Ukrainian Vitaliy Mykolenko, who was a regular starter for the Toffees at left-back towards the end of last season.

Therefore, this is a signing that would make a lot of sense for Lampard, and if Everton can prise him away from Manchester City, then he could be a superb addition at Goodison Park.

Newcastle eye Everton ace Pickford

Newcastle United are reportedly now eyeing a shock move for former Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the summer.

The Lowdown: Sunderland connection

Having being born in Washington in Sunderland, Pickford has strong connections with the Wearside club, as he made 35 appearances for them in total over two seasons.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Now at Everton, he is also the number one goalkeeper for England, a testament to how far he has come since leaving the Black Cats.

The Latest: Newcastle lurking

Writing in his latest piece for talkSPORT, transfer insider Alex Crook has revealed that the St. James’ Park faithful are now ‘monitoring’ Pickford’s situation, as the Toffees prepare to listen to offers for him this summer.

He will ‘push’ for a move away from Goodison Park if they are relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season, but Tottenham Hotspur are also thought to be interested in his signature.

The Magpies will also find it ‘tricky’ to persuade him to move to Tyneside, given his SAFC connections.

The Verdict: Difficult

Although players have moved between rivals in the past, this deal does seem like a difficult one to do.

Described as having ‘world-class‘ shot-stopping ability by Blues manager Frank Lampard, Pickford will have no shortage of admirers if they were to go down, and the 28-year-old is in the prime of his career.

The Toon will be able to offer up the money to both him and the club, but that may not be enough to push a move through.

Five challenges that await Steve Rhodes

From addressing players’ confidence to dealing with the board president’s interference, the new head coach will have plenty of issues to tackle

Mohammad Isam07-Jun-2018A confidence crisisBangladesh’s confidence has taken a hit since their disastrous South Africa tour last year and the even more disappointing home series against Sri Lanka. The two wins over Sri Lanka in the Nidahas Trophy in March helped slightly but it did not mend anything for the long term, which reflected in their T20 series loss to Afghanistan this month. There isn’t a quick fix to this but Rhodes has to build towards the self-belief the Bangladesh team thrived on in 2015. It will be a lot to do with helping the five senior players get accustomed to his ways. Young players like Mustafizur Rahman, Mosaddek Hossain and Soumya Sarkar need to be challenged as they will face mounting pressure in the coming 12 months leading upto the World Cup.More away gamesOne of the main reasons behind Bangladesh’s rise after the 2015 World Cup was because of the number of home games. The comfort of playing in their backyard helped them beat Pakistan, India and South Africa in successive ODI series.Till the 2019 World Cup, Bangladesh will be playing in the West Indies, India (Asia Cup) and then New Zealand and Ireland next year. According to the new Future Tours Programme seen by ESPNcricinfo, Bangladesh are touring India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Ireland, before the 2020 World T20.While winning at home is of paramount importance to the short-sighted in the BCB, the players themselves have bought the idea that doing well abroad is important for their overall development.Shakib Al Hasan chats with BCB president Nazmul Hassan•Raton GomesWorking board chiefIf it was any other time in Bangladesh cricket, Rhodes wouldn’t need to worry too much about the board president. But current chief Nazmul Hassan has been forthright about criticisms, compliments and decision-making. Some call it interference but he firmly believes he is making a difference.Hassan is known to be present during team meetings on the eve of crucial matches; he makes selection decisions even after the selectors have submitted their team. Hassan had given Chandika Hathurusingha a lot of freedom as head coach, which didn’t go down too well in the BCB and among some of the players, but it is expected that Rhodes will enjoy a similar treatment. The challenge for Rhodes will be to balance BCB’s support and the chief’s interventions, apart from his job of coaching the Bangladesh players.Short-lived hungerRhodes would also have to ensure the younger players have sustained hunger to perform consistently in international cricket. Far too many players come with a big tag, initially impress everyone and then fade away as quickly. Currently, the likes of Sarkar, Mosaddek and Mohammad Saifuddin are on this list, while the likes of Mustafizur and Sabbir Rahman have blown hot and cold. The tendency of focusing on becoming a star before becoming a top performer goes down as low as the Under-19s in Bangladesh cricket. This certainly needs addressing at the top level. How Rhodes works on it will depend on his own knowledge of dealing with young players. An ODI countryRhodes must also be aware that Bangladesh have been performing well in ODIs. However, this hasn’t really been the case in Tests or T20s. They have also been progressive in the ODI set-up, ensuring a good mix of experience and youth.Mashrafe Mortaza will be a great sounding board for Rhodes and he will have to combine with Shakib Al Hasan to improve the T20 team and make the Test team a more proactive side.Currently, Bangladesh have shown very little intent in improving as a T20 side. The BPL hasn’t really served as a production line for big hitters or threatening T20 bowlers. In Tests, they have had some historic wins since 2016 when they beat England, Australia and Sri Lanka for the first time. But the pace attack hasn’t matured enough to bowling consistently for a whole Test match, mainly because of heavy emphasis on spin in home conditions.

Paul Collingwood: Durham's DNA

He knows his side are ‘underdogs’ against Yorkshire in the T20 semi-final, but he has spent his entire career scrapping and has no intention of stopping yet

Tim Wigmore19-Aug-2016The shires were once brimming with former England captains, unwinding their playing careers in the county game. Now they are more readily found commentating, or in the case of Andrew Strauss, running English cricket. All the more reason, then, to celebrate the continued presence of Paul Collingwood in county cricket. Thanks to Carlos Brathwaite, Collingwood remains the only person to ever lead England to glory in an ICC event.Even during Durham’s years toiling at the foot of the Championship – they were bottom three times, 17th, out of 18, twice, and 16th once during their first six seasons – perhaps never did the club have to endure a crisis rivalling the one they are combatting today. It is not so much sporting as existential: the club has amassed debts of around £5 million, is unlikely to ever host another Test match, and the chief executive has even been forced to clarify that there is “no imminent threat to the future of the club”.Durham’s very is, as Collingwood says, “for North East cricketers to be given an opportunity to fulfil their dreams in their home ground”, yet already one leading home-grown player, Mark Stoneman, has announced he is departing, and there are fears that another, Scott Borthwick, will follow. These are times that demand all of Collingwood’s resolve. He is Durham cricket in excelsis, and has represented the club in 22 of their 25 years in professional cricket. Along the way Durham have had much to celebrate – three County Championships, hosting an Ashes Test, and most importantly, supplying England with an abundance of talent. Indeed, when England regained the Ashes in 2009, Peter Roebuck said it was less a victory for the country than for “Durham and the Dominions”. Given the off-field circumstances, winning the T20 Blast, the only competition that the club has never won, on Saturday would be an achievement to rank with any of these.”It would mean a lot to the club. It’s a form of the game that we haven’t nailed so far and we’ve got an opportunity to achieve something special,” Collingwood says. As a man who forged a fine international career out of defying expectations, he is not the sort to be perturbed by facing Yorkshire, with all their coterie of England players, in the semi-finals.”I don’t think we’ve played our best T20 cricket until the last three games, but the good thing is, we seem to be peaking at the right time,” Collingwood says. “Hopefully we can take that kind of form into the semi-finals and the belief that we can put teams under pressure. We’ve been underdogs in the last few weeks, so it’s something that we’re not too bothered about. It’s quite nice sometimes to go out there and have a fearless attitude.”

“It would be very easy to not be around, and give the responsibility to other people’s shoulders but I’m not that kind of character”

That much is ensured by the presence of Ben Stokes, albeit probably as a specialist batsman, but Collingwood cites Durham’s bowling, with includes Mark Wood, as their strength. “Our death bowling is becoming increasingly good in the last few games. And we’ve got two X-factor bowlers: Woody, who can take early wickets, and Scott Borthwick, who can turn it both ways.”But Borthwick is emblematic of the uncertainty that has been the backdrop to Durham’s season. Surrey and Yorkshire are among those to have approached him out about a move. “I think it is affecting him personally,” Collingwood says. “These are tough decisions for individuals to make, and a lot of mental energy is sapped from you when you try and make these decisions, so hopefully he makes a decision soon and it’s a positive one for us.”It’s affected us all year, I’d be lying if I said no. But we’ve got to find ways to keep battling on, and finding ways to keep going out there and performing. We’ve been in these situations before and it is disappointing, but we crack on and get our heads down and dig in.”Collingwood knows no other way. The second act of his Durham career, since his final England appearance in 2011, already includes leading the team to the County Championship in 2013. He has just signed a contract to extend his career to 2017, when he turns 41, and wants to play even longer. While Collingwood has impressed during his forays into international coaching with England and Scotland, Durham’s off-field turmoil has only reinforced his sense of duty to his home-town team.”The club’s going through a difficult period and I want to be there for them. It would be very easy to not be around, and give the responsibility to other people’s shoulders, but I’m not that kind of character. I want to be there for Durham and help them out as much as I can.”Mark Wood’s return has given Durham’s attack an edge•Getty ImagesYet for all of Collingwood’s devotion to Durham’s cause, something else shines through: the sheer relish that he still feels playing the sport. When we meet, he is palpably downcast after Durham’s thumping in the County Championship at Lord’s, but his excitement at the challenges ahead remains clear. “I still believe we can have success at the club and I’m still enjoying bringing the youngsters through, which is an important role of mine. Yes, of course I still enjoy it. In the end you’ve got to pinch yourself that you’re a professional cricketer in a sport that I love and want to play for as long as possible, as long as the form is good and the body is good.”With the bat, Collingwood’s form has held up admirably in 2016: he is averaging over 40 in the County Championship, and he has made useful contributions in both limited-overs formats, even if he has been spotted batting as low as No. 8 in T20 cricket. But a combination of a broken thumb, split webbing in his hand and a bad calf have limited his bowling, which was mercilessly exposed in the T20 quarter-final at Bristol. Three legitimate deliveries that went for a total of 22; it was a mercy that, when he bowled two beamers, Collingwood had to be taken out of the attack.”Without making too many excuses, I haven’t bowled for seven weeks,” he says. “But I thought I’d be able to draw upon my experience and get through an over, even though I did have a thumb splinter on. I thought it was a risk worth taking, but after three balls it was obvious that it was the wrong decision in hindsight. I’ll never shy away from anything.”As good as his word, Collingwood will spend the days before Finals Day returning to bowling in the nets, ready to summon himself to bowl to Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow at Edgbaston.
